Surah 96 · Makki · 19 ayat

The Clot

العلق

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ۝١

Saheeh InternationalRecite in the name of your Lord who created

Abdel HaleemRead! In the name of your Lord who created:

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalCreated man from a clinging substance.

Abdel HaleemHe created manfrom a clinging form.

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalRecite, and your Lord is the most Generous -

Abdel HaleemRead! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalWho taught by the pen

Abdel Haleemwho taught by [means of] the pen,

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalTaught man that which he knew not.

Abdel Haleemwho taught man what he did not know.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ۝٦

Saheeh InternationalNo! [But] indeed, man transgresses

Abdel HaleemBut man exceeds all bounds

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalBecause he sees himself self-sufficient.

Abdel Haleemwhen he thinks he is self-sufficient:

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, to your Lord is the return.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], all will return to your Lord.

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalHave you seen the one who forbids

Abdel HaleemHave you seen the man who forbids

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalA servant when he prays?

Abdel Haleem[Our] servant to pray?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalHave you seen if he is upon guidance

Abdel HaleemHave you seen whether he is rightly guided,

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalOr enjoins righteousness?

Abdel Haleemor encourages true piety?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalHave you seen if he denies and turns away -

Abdel HaleemHave you seen whether he denies the truth and turns away from it?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalDoes he not know that Allāh sees?

Abdel HaleemDoes he not realize that God sees all?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalNo! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock

Abdel HaleemNo! If he does not stop, We shall drag him by his forehead––

نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalA lying, sinning forelock.

Abdel Haleemhis lying, sinful forehead.

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalThen let him call his associates;

Abdel HaleemLet him summon his comrades;

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalWe will call the angels of Hell.

Abdel HaleemWe shall summon the guards of Hell.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalNo! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].

Abdel HaleemNo! Do not obey him [Prophet]: bow down in worship and draw close.
