Surah 90 · Makki · 20 ayat

Al-Balad

The City

البلد

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ۝١

Saheeh InternationalI swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]

Abdel HaleemI swear by this city––

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city

Abdel Haleemand you [Prophet] are an inhabitant of this city––

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

Abdel Haleem[I swear] by parent and offspring,

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalWe have certainly created man into hardship.

Abdel Haleemthat We have created man for toil and trial.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalDoes he think that never will anyone overcome him?

Abdel HaleemDoes he think that no one will have power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا۝٦

Saheeh InternationalHe says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

Abdel Haleem‘I have squandered great wealth,’ he says.

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalDoes he think that no one has seen him?

Abdel HaleemDoes he think no one observes him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalHave We not made for him two eyes?

Abdel HaleemDid We not give him eyes,

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd a tongue and two lips?

Abdel Haleema tongue, lips,

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd have shown him the two ways?

Abdel Haleemand point out to him the two clear ways [of good and evil]?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalBut he has not broken through the difficult pass.

Abdel HaleemYet he has not attempted the steep path.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

Abdel HaleemWhat will explain to you what the steep path is?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalIt is the freeing of a slave

Abdel HaleemIt is to free a slave,

أَوْ إِطْعَـٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalOr feeding on a day of severe hunger

Abdel Haleemto feed at a time of hunger

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalAn orphan of near relationship

Abdel Haleeman orphaned relative

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalOr a needy person in misery

Abdel Haleemor a poor person in distress,

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

Abdel Haleemand to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalThose are the companions of the right.

Abdel HaleemThose who do this will be on the right-hand side,

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalBut they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

Abdel Haleembut those who disbelieve in Our revelations will be on the left-hand side,

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalOver them will be fire closed in.

Abdel Haleemand the Fire will close in on them.
