وَٱلْفَجْرِ١

Surah 89 · Makki · 30 ayat
The Dawn
الفجر
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلْفَجْرِ١
Saheeh InternationalBy the dawn
Abdel HaleemBy the Daybreak,
وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ٢
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] ten nights
Abdel Haleemby the Ten Nights,
وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ٣
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the even [number] and the odd
Abdel Haleemby the even and the odd,
وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ٤
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the night when it passes,
Abdel Haleemby the passing night––
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ٥
Saheeh InternationalIs there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?
Abdel Haleemis this oath strong enough for a rational person?
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ٦
Saheeh InternationalHave you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
Abdel HaleemHave you [Prophet] considered how your Lord dealt with [the people] of 'Ad,
إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ٧
Saheeh International[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,
Abdel Haleemof Iram, [the city] of lofty pillars,
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ٨
Saheeh InternationalThe likes of whom had never been created in the land?
Abdel Haleemwhose like has never been made in any land,
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ٩
Saheeh InternationalAnd [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
Abdel Haleemand the Thamud, who hewed into the rocks in the valley,
وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ١٠
Saheeh InternationalAnd [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?
Abdel Haleemand the mighty and powerful Pharaoh?
ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ١١
Saheeh International[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
Abdel HaleemAll of them committed excesses in their lands,
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ١٢
Saheeh InternationalAnd increased therein the corruption.
Abdel Haleemand spread corruption there:
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ١٣
Saheeh InternationalSo your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
Abdel Haleemyour Lord let a scourge of punishment loose on them.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ١٤
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, your Lord is in observation.
Abdel HaleemYour Lord is always watchful.
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ١٥
Saheeh InternationalAnd as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
Abdel Haleem[The nature of] man is that, when his Lord tries him through honour and blessings, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me,’
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ١٦
Saheeh InternationalBut when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
Abdel Haleembut when He tries him through the restriction of his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ١٧
Saheeh InternationalNo! But you do not honor the orphan
Abdel HaleemNo indeed! You [people] do not honour orphans,
وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ١٨
Saheeh InternationalAnd you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
Abdel Haleemyou do not urge one another to feed the poor,
وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا١٩
Saheeh InternationalAnd you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,
Abdel Haleemyou consume inheritance greedily,
وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا٢٠
Saheeh InternationalAnd you love wealth with immense love.
Abdel Haleemand you love wealth with a passion.
كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا٢١
Saheeh InternationalNo! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
Abdel HaleemNo indeed! When the earth is pounded to dust, pounded and pounded,
وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا٢٢
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,
Abdel Haleemwhen your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank,
وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ٢٣
Saheeh InternationalAnd brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
Abdel Haleemwhen Hell is that Day brought near- on that Day man will take heed, but what good will that be to him then?
يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى٢٤
Saheeh InternationalHe will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."
Abdel HaleemHe will say, ‘Would that I had provided for this life to come!’
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ٢٥
Saheeh InternationalSo on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
Abdel HaleemOn that Day, no one will punish as He punishes,
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ٢٦
Saheeh InternationalAnd none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
Abdel Haleemand no one will bind as He binds.
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ٢٧
Saheeh International[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
Abdel Haleem‘[But] you, soul at peace:
ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً٢٨
Saheeh InternationalReturn to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
Abdel Haleemreturn to your Lord well pleased and well pleasing;
فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى٢٩
Saheeh InternationalAnd enter among My [righteous] servants
Abdel Haleemgo in among My servants;
وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى٣٠
Saheeh InternationalAnd enter My Paradise."
