Surah 91 · Makki · 15 ayat

Ash-Shams

The Sun

الشمس

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا۝١

Saheeh InternationalBy the sun and its brightness

Abdel HaleemBy the sun in its morning brightness

وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا۝٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the moon when it follows it

Abdel Haleemand by the moon as it follows it,

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا۝٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the day when it displays it

Abdel Haleemby the day as it displays the sun’s glory

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا۝٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it

Abdel Haleemand by the night as it conceals it,

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا۝٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the sky and He who constructed it

Abdel Haleemby the sky and how He built it

وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا۝٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the earth and He who spread it

Abdel Haleemand by the earth and how He spread it,

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the soul and He who proportioned it

Abdel Haleemby the soul and how He formed it

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا۝٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

Abdel Haleemand inspired it [to know] its own rebellion and piety!

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا۝٩

Saheeh InternationalHe has succeeded who purifies it,

Abdel HaleemThe one who purifies his soul succeeds

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

Abdel Haleemand the one who corrupts it fails.

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalThamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,

Abdel HaleemIn their arrogant cruelty, the people of Thamud called [their messenger] a liar,

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalWhen the most wretched of them was sent forth.

Abdel Haleemwhen the most wicked man among them rose [against him].

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَا۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink."

Abdel HaleemThe messenger of God said to them, ‘[Leave] God’s camel to drink,’

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalBut they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].

Abdel Haleembut they called him a liar and hamstrung her. Their Lord destroyed them for their crime and levelled them.

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَا۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd He does not fear the consequence thereof.

Abdel HaleemHe did not hesitate to punish them.
