Surah 88 · Makki · 26 ayat

Al-Ghashiyah

The Overwhelming

الغاشية

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ۝١

Saheeh InternationalHas there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?

Abdel HaleemHave you heard tell [Prophet] about the Overwhelming Event?

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ۝٢

Saheeh International[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,

Abdel HaleemOn that Day, there will be downcast faces,

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalWorking [hard] and exhausted.

Abdel Haleemtoiling and weary,

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً۝٤

Saheeh InternationalThey will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.

Abdel Haleemas they enter the blazing Fire

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalThey will be given drink from a boiling spring.

Abdel Haleemand are forced to drink from a boiling spring,

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ۝٦

Saheeh InternationalFor them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant

Abdel Haleemwith no food for them except bitter dry thorns

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalWhich neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.

Abdel Haleemthat neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ۝٨

Saheeh International[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.

Abdel HaleemOn that Day there will also be faces radiant with bliss,

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalWith their effort [they are] satisfied

Abdel Haleemwell pleased with their labour,

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalIn an elevated garden,

Abdel Haleemin a lofty garden,

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً۝١١

Saheeh InternationalWherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.

Abdel Haleemwhere they will hear no idle talk,

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalWithin it is a flowing spring.

Abdel Haleemwith a flowing spring,

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalWithin it are couches raised high

Abdel Haleemraised couches,

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd cups put in place

Abdel Haleemgoblets placed before them,

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd cushions lined up

Abdel Haleemcushions set in rows,

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd carpets spread around.

Abdel Haleemand carpets spread.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalThen do they not look at the camels - how they are created?

Abdel HaleemDo the disbelievers not see how rain clouds are formed

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd at the sky - how it is raised?

Abdel Haleemhow the heavens are lifted,

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd at the mountains - how they are erected?

Abdel Haleemhow the mountains are raised high,

وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd at the earth - how it is spread out?

Abdel Haleemhow the earth is spread out?

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalSo remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.

Abdel HaleemSo [Prophet] warn them: your only task is to give warning,

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalYou are not over them a controller.

Abdel Haleemyou are not there to control them.

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalHowever, he who turns away and disbelieves

Abdel HaleemAs for those who turn away and disbelieve,

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalThen Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.

Abdel HaleemGod will inflict the greatest torment upon them.

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, to Us is their return.

Abdel HaleemIt is to Us they will return,

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalThen indeed, upon Us is their account.

Abdel Haleemand then it is for Us to call them to account.
