At-Takwir

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ۝١

Saheeh InternationalWhen the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]

Abdel HaleemWhen the sun is shrouded in darkness,

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتْ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the stars fall, dispersing,

Abdel Haleemwhen the stars are dimmed,

وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the mountains are removed

Abdel Haleemwhen the mountains are set in motion,

وَإِذَا ٱلْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd when full-term she-camels are neglected

Abdel Haleemwhen pregnant camels are abandoned,

وَإِذَا ٱلْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the wild beasts are gathered

Abdel Haleemwhen wild beasts are herded together,

وَإِذَا ٱلْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ۝٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the seas are filled with flame

Abdel Haleemwhen the seas boil over,

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the souls are paired

Abdel Haleemwhen souls are sorted into classes,

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked

Abdel Haleemwhen the baby girl buried alive is asked

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalFor what sin she was killed

Abdel Haleemfor what sin she was killed,

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]

Abdel Haleemwhen the records of deeds are spread open,

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the sky is stripped away

Abdel Haleemwhen the sky is stripped away,

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd when Hellfire is set ablaze

Abdel Haleemwhen Hell is made to blaze

وَإِذَا ٱلْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd when Paradise is brought near,

Abdel Haleemand Paradise brought near:

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّآ أَحْضَرَتْ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalA soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].

Abdel Haleemthen every soul will know what it has brought about.

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلْخُنَّسِ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalSo I swear by the retreating stars -

Abdel HaleemI swear by the planets

ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْكُنَّسِ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalThose that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]

Abdel Haleemthat recede, move, and hide,

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd by the night as it closes in

Abdel Haleemby the night that descends,

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]

Abdel Haleemby the dawn that softly breathes:

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ۝١٩

Saheeh International[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]

Abdel Haleemthis is the speech of a noble messenger,

ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ۝٢٠

Saheeh International[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],

Abdel Haleemwho possesses great strength and is held in honour by the Lord of the Throne––

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalObeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.

Abdel Haleemhe is obeyed there and worthy of trust.

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.

Abdel HaleemYour companion is not mad:

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.

Abdel Haleemhe did see him on the clear horizon.

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.

Abdel HaleemHe does not withhold what is revealed to him from beyond.

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].

Abdel HaleemThis is not the word of an outcast devil.

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalSo where are you going?

Abdel HaleemSo where are you [people] going?

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalIt is not except a reminder to the worlds

Abdel HaleemThis is a message for all people;

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ۝٢٨

Saheeh InternationalFor whoever wills among you to take a right course.

Abdel Haleemfor those who wish to take the straight path.

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ۝٢٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.

Abdel HaleemBut you will only wish to do so by the will of God, the Lord of all people.
