Surah 80 · Makki · 42 ayat

'Abasa

He Frowned

عبس

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ۝١

Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away

Abdel HaleemHe frowned and turned away

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalBecause there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

Abdel Haleemwhen the blind man came to him––

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalBut what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified

Abdel Haleemfor all you know, he might have grown in spirit,

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalOr be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

Abdel Haleemor taken note of something useful to him.

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalAs for he who thinks himself without need,

Abdel HaleemFor the self-satisfied one

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ۝٦

Saheeh InternationalTo him you give attention.

Abdel Haleemyou go out of your way––

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

Abdel Haleemthough you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalBut as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

Abdel Haleembut from the one who has come to you full of eagerness

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalWhile he fears [Allāh],

Abdel Haleemand awe

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalFrom him you are distracted.

Abdel Haleemyou allow yourself to be distracted.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalNo! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;

Abdel HaleemNo indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalSo whoever wills may remember it.

Abdel Haleemfrom which those who wish to be taught should learn,

فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ۝١٣

Saheeh International[It is recorded] in honored sheets,

Abdel Haleem[written] on honoured,

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalExalted and purified,

Abdel Haleemexalted, pure pages,

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ۝١٥

Saheeh International[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

Abdel Haleemby the hands of

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalNoble and dutiful.

Abdel Haleemnoble and virtuous scribes.

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalDestroyed [i.e., cursed] is man; how disbelieving is he.

Abdel HaleemWoe to man! How ungrateful he is!

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalFrom what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?

Abdel HaleemFrom what thing does God create him?

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalFrom a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

Abdel HaleemHe creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalThen He eased the way for him;

Abdel HaleemHe makes the way easy for him,

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalThen He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

Abdel Haleemthen He causes him to die and be buried.

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalThen when He wills, He will resurrect him.

Abdel HaleemWhen He wills, He will raise him up again.

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalNo! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

Abdel HaleemYet man does not fulfil God’s commands.

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalThen let mankind look at his food -

Abdel HaleemLet man consider the food he eats!

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalHow We poured down water in torrents,

Abdel HaleemWe pour down abundant water

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalThen We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

Abdel Haleemand cause the soil to split open.

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd caused to grow within it grain

Abdel HaleemWe make grain grow,

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا۝٢٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd grapes and herbage

Abdel Haleemand vines, fresh vegetation,

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا۝٢٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd olive and palm trees

Abdel Haleemolive trees, date palms,

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا۝٣٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd gardens of dense shrubbery

Abdel Haleemluscious gardens,

وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا۝٣١

Saheeh InternationalAnd fruit and grass -

Abdel Haleemfruits, and fodder:

مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ۝٣٢

Saheeh International[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

Abdel Haleemall for you and your livestock to enjoy.

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ۝٣٣

Saheeh InternationalBut when there comes the Deafening Blast

Abdel HaleemWhen the Deafening Blast comes––

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ۝٣٤

Saheeh InternationalOn the Day a man will flee from his brother

Abdel Haleemthe Day man will flee from his own brother,

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ۝٣٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd his mother and his father

Abdel Haleemhis mother, his father,

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ۝٣٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd his wife and his children,

Abdel Haleemhis wife, his children:

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ۝٣٧

Saheeh InternationalFor every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

Abdel Haleemeach of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day-

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ۝٣٨

Saheeh International[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

Abdel Haleemon that Day some faces will be beaming,

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ۝٣٩

Saheeh InternationalLaughing, rejoicing at good news.

Abdel Haleemlaughing, and rejoicing,

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ۝٤٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

Abdel Haleembut some faces will be dust-stained

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ۝٤١

Saheeh InternationalBlackness will cover them.

Abdel Haleemand covered in darkness:

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ۝٤٢

Saheeh InternationalThose are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

Abdel Haleemthose are the disbelievers, the licentious.
