Surah 78 · Makki · 40 ayat

An-Naba

The Tidings

النبإ

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ۝١

Saheeh InternationalAbout what are they asking one another?

Abdel HaleemWhat are they asking about?

عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalAbout the great news -

Abdel HaleemThe momentous announcement

ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalThat over which they are in disagreement.

Abdel Haleemabout which they differ.

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalNo! They are going to know.

Abdel HaleemThey will find out.

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalThen, no! They are going to know.

Abdel HaleemIn the end they will find out.

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا۝٦

Saheeh InternationalHave We not made the earth a resting place?

Abdel HaleemDid We not make the earth smooth,

وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd the mountains as stakes?

Abdel Haleemand make the mountains to keep it stable?

وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا۝٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd We created you in pairs.

Abdel HaleemDid We not create you in pairs,

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا۝٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd made your sleep [a means for] rest

Abdel Haleemgive you sleep for rest,

وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd made the night as clothing.

Abdel Haleemthe night as a cover,

وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا۝١١

Saheeh InternationalAnd made the day for livelihood.

Abdel Haleemand the day for your livelihood?

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd constructed above you seven strong [heavens].

Abdel HaleemDid We not build seven strong [heavens] above you,

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd made [therein] a burning lamp

Abdel Haleemand make a blazing lamp?

وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.

Abdel HaleemDid We not send water pouring down from the clouds

لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalThat We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.

Abdel Haleemto bring forth with it grain, plants,

وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd gardens of entwined growth.

Abdel Haleemand luxuriant gardens?

إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًا۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

Abdel HaleemA time has been appointed for the Day of Decision:

يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalThe Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

Abdel Haleema Day when the Trumpet will sound and you will come forward in crowds,

وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًا۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd the heaven is opened and will become gateways.

Abdel Haleemwhen the sky will open up like wide portals,

وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

Abdel Haleemwhen the mountains will vanish like a mirage.

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Hell has been lying in wait

Abdel HaleemHell lies in wait,

لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalFor the transgressors, a place of return,

Abdel Haleema home for oppressors

لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalIn which they will remain for ages [unending].

Abdel Haleemto stay in for a long, long time,

لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalThey will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

Abdel Haleemwhere they will taste no coolness nor drink

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalExcept scalding water and [foul] purulence -

Abdel Haleemexcept one that is scalding and dark––

جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalAn appropriate recompense.

Abdel Haleema fitting requital,

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, they were not expecting an account

Abdel Haleemfor they did not fear a reckoning,

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا۝٢٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

Abdel Haleemand they rejected Our messages as lies.

وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا۝٢٩

Saheeh InternationalBut all things We have enumerated in writing.

Abdel HaleemWe have recorded everything in a Record.

فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا۝٣٠

Saheeh International"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."

Abdel Haleem‘Taste this: all you will get from Us is more torment.’

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا۝٣١

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, for the righteous is attainment -

Abdel HaleemFor those who were aware of God there is supreme fulfilment:

حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا۝٣٢

Saheeh InternationalGardens and grapevines.

Abdel Haleemprivate gardens, vineyards,

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا۝٣٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd full-breasted [companions] of equal age.

Abdel Haleemnubile, well-matched companions,

وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا۝٣٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd a full cup.

Abdel Haleemand an overflowing cup.

لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا۝٣٥

Saheeh InternationalNo ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

Abdel HaleemThere they will hear no vain or lying talk:

جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا۝٣٦

Saheeh International[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,

Abdel Haleema reward from your Lord, a fitting gift

رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا۝٣٧

Saheeh International[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.

Abdel Haleemfrom the Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between, the Lord of Mercy. They will have no authority from Him to speak.

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا۝٣٨

Saheeh InternationalThe Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

Abdel HaleemOn the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, they will not speak except for those to whom the Lord of Mercy gives permission, who will say only what is right.

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا۝٣٩

Saheeh InternationalThat is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.

Abdel HaleemThat is the Day of Truth. So whoever wishes to do so should take the path that leads to his Lord.

إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا۝٤٠

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

Abdel HaleemWe have warned you of imminent torment, on the Day when every person will see what their own hands have sent ahead for them, when the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I were dust!’
