Nuh

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦٓ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ۝١

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."

Abdel HaleemWe sent Noah to his people: ‘Warn your people, before a painful punishment comes to them.’

قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّى لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "O my people, indeed I am to you a clear warner -

Abdel HaleemAnd so he said, ‘My people, I am here to warn you plainly.

أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalTo worship Allāh, fear Him and obey me.

Abdel HaleemServe God, be mindful of Him and obey me.

يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., Allāh] will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allāh, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew."

Abdel HaleemHe will forgive you your sins and spare you until your appointed time––when God’s appointed time arrives it cannot be postponed. If only you understood!’

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِى لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا۝٥

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.

Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day,

فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىٓ إِلَّا فِرَارًا۝٦

Saheeh InternationalBut my invitation increased them not except in flight [i.e., aversion].

Abdel Haleembut the more I call them, the further they run away:

وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًا۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.

Abdel Haleemevery time I call them, so that You may forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, cover their heads with their garments, persist in their rejection, and grow more insolent and arrogant.

ثُمَّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًا۝٨

Saheeh InternationalThen I invited them publicly.

Abdel HaleemI have tried calling them openly.

ثُمَّ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا۝٩

Saheeh InternationalThen I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly

Abdel HaleemI have tried preaching to them in public and speaking to them in private.

فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًا۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.

Abdel HaleemI said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord: He is ever forgiving.

يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا۝١١

Saheeh InternationalHe will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers

Abdel HaleemHe will send down abundant rain from the sky for you;

وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَٰلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَـٰرًا۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.

Abdel HaleemHe will give you wealth and sons; He will provide you with gardens and rivers.

مَّا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًا۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalWhat is [the matter] with you that you do not attribute to Allāh [due] grandeur

Abdel HaleemWhat is the matter with you? Why will you not fear God’s majesty,

وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًا۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalWhile He has created you in stages?

Abdel Haleemwhen He has created you stage by stage?

أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍ طِبَاقًا۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalDo you not consider how Allāh has created seven heavens in layers

Abdel HaleemHave you ever wondered how God created seven heavens, one above the other,

وَجَعَلَ ٱلْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?

Abdel Haleemplaced the moon as a light in them and the sun as a lamp,

وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth.

Abdel Haleemhow God made you spring forth from the earth like a plant,

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًا۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalThen He will return you into it and extract you [another] extraction.

Abdel Haleemhow He will return you into it and then bring you out again,

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًا۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has made for you the earth an expanse

Abdel Haleemand how He has spread the Earth out for you

لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟ مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًا۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalThat you may follow therein roads of passage.'"

Abdel Haleemto walk along its spacious paths?” ’

قَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِى وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارًا۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalNoah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.

Abdel HaleemNoah said, ‘My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose riches and children only increase their ruin;

وَمَكَرُوا۟ مَكْرًا كُبَّارًا۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd they conspired an immense conspiracy

Abdel Haleemwho have made a grand plan,

وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًا۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwāʿ or Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and Nasr.'

Abdel Haleemsaying, “Do not renounce your gods! Do not renounce Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Yauq, or Nasr!”

وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا۟ كَثِيرًا ۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَـٰلًا۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."

Abdel HaleemThey have led many astray. Lord, bring nothing but destruction down on the evildoers!’

مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا۟ فَأُدْخِلُوا۟ نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارًا۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalBecause of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allāh [any] helpers.

Abdel HaleemThey were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings: they found no one to help them against God.

وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًا۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd Noah said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.

Abdel HaleemAnd Noah said, ‘Lord, do not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth-

إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا۟ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, if You leave them, they will mislead Your servants and not beget except [every] wicked one and [confirmed] disbeliever.

Abdel Haleemif you leave them they will lead Your servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers-

رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًۢا۝٢٨

Saheeh InternationalMy Lord, forgive me and my parents and whoever enters my house a believer and the believing men and believing women. And do not increase the wrongdoers except in destruction."

Abdel HaleemLord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer. Forgive believing men and women but bring nothing but ruin down on the evildoers!’
