Surah 55 · Madani · 78 ayat
The Beneficent
الرحمن
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ١
Saheeh InternationalThe Most Merciful
Abdel HaleemIt is the Lord of Mercy
عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ٢
Saheeh InternationalTaught the Qur’ān,
Abdel Haleemwho taught the Quran.
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ٣
Saheeh InternationalCreated man,
Abdel HaleemHe created man
عَلَّمَهُ ٱلْبَيَانَ٤
Saheeh International[And] taught him eloquence.
Abdel Haleemand taught him to communicate.
ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ٥
Saheeh InternationalThe sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,
Abdel HaleemThe sun and the moon follow their calculated courses;
وَٱلنَّجْمُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ٦
Saheeh InternationalAnd the stars and trees prostrate.
Abdel Haleemthe plants and the trees submit to His designs;
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ٧
Saheeh InternationalAnd the heaven He raised and imposed the balance
Abdel HaleemHe has raised up the sky. He has set the balance
أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْمِيزَانِ٨
Saheeh InternationalThat you not transgress within the balance.
Abdel Haleemso that you may not exceed in the balance:
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلْوَزْنَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا۟ ٱلْمِيزَانَ٩
Saheeh InternationalAnd establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.
Abdel Haleemweigh with justice and do not fall short in the balance.
وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلْأَنَامِ١٠
Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth He laid [out] for the creatures.
Abdel HaleemHe set down the Earth for His creatures,
فِيهَا فَـٰكِهَةٌ وَٱلنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ ٱلْأَكْمَامِ١١
Saheeh InternationalTherein is fruit and palm trees having sheaths [of dates]
Abdel Haleemwith its fruits, its palm trees with sheathed clusters,
وَٱلْحَبُّ ذُو ٱلْعَصْفِ وَٱلرَّيْحَانُ١٢
Saheeh InternationalAnd grain having husks and scented plants.
Abdel Haleemits husked grain, its fragrant plants.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ١٣
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ كَٱلْفَخَّارِ١٤
Saheeh InternationalHe created man from clay like [that of] pottery.
Abdel HaleemHe created mankind out of dried clay, like pottery,
وَخَلَقَ ٱلْجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٍ مِّن نَّارٍ١٥
Saheeh InternationalAnd He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.
Abdel Haleemthe jinn out of smokeless fire.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ١٦
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَغْرِبَيْنِ١٧
Saheeh International[He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets.
Abdel HaleemHe is Lord of the two risings and Lord of the two settings.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ١٨
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ١٩
Saheeh InternationalHe released the two seas, meeting [one another];
Abdel HaleemHe released the two bodies of [fresh and salt] water. They meet,
بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ٢٠
Saheeh InternationalBetween them is a barrier so neither of them transgresses.
Abdel Haleemyet there is a barrier between them they do not cross.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٢١
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُمَا ٱللُّؤْلُؤُ وَٱلْمَرْجَانُ٢٢
Saheeh InternationalFrom both of them emerge pearl and coral.
Abdel HaleemPearls come forth from them: large ones, and small, brilliant ones.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٢٣
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
وَلَهُ ٱلْجَوَارِ ٱلْمُنشَـَٔاتُ فِى ٱلْبَحْرِ كَٱلْأَعْلَـٰمِ٢٤
Saheeh InternationalAnd to Him belong the ships [with sails] elevated in the sea like mountains.
Abdel HaleemHis are the moving ships that float, high as mountains, on the sea.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٢٥
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ٢٦
Saheeh InternationalEveryone upon it [i.e., the earth] will perish,
Abdel HaleemEveryone on earth perishes;
وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ٢٧
Saheeh InternationalAnd there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
Abdel Haleemall that remains is the Face of your Lord, full of majesty, bestowing honour.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٢٨
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
يَسْـَٔلُهُۥ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ هُوَ فِى شَأْنٍ٢٩
Saheeh InternationalWhoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is in [i.e., bringing about] a matter.
Abdel HaleemEveryone in heaven and earth entreats Him; every day He is at work.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٣٠
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ أَيُّهَ ٱلثَّقَلَانِ٣١
Saheeh InternationalWe will attend to you, O prominent beings.
Abdel HaleemWe shall attend to you two huge armies [of jinn and mankind].
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٣٢
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
يَـٰمَعْشَرَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ إِنِ ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَن تَنفُذُوا۟ مِنْ أَقْطَارِ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنفُذُوا۟ ۚ لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ٣٣
Saheeh InternationalO company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allāh].
Abdel HaleemJinn and mankind, if you can pass beyond the regions of heaven and earth, then do so: you will not pass without Our authority.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٣٤
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّن نَّارٍ وَنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنتَصِرَانِ٣٥
Saheeh InternationalThere will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves.
Abdel HaleemA flash of fire and smoke will be released upon you and no one will come to your aid.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٣٦
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فَإِذَا ٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَٱلدِّهَانِ٣٧
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the heaven is split open and becomes rose-colored like oil -
Abdel HaleemWhen the sky is torn apart and turns crimson, like red hide.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٣٨
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُسْـَٔلُ عَن ذَنۢبِهِۦٓ إِنسٌ وَلَا جَآنٌّ٣٩
Saheeh InternationalThen on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn.
Abdel HaleemOn that Day neither mankind nor jinn will be asked about their sins.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٤٠
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
يُعْرَفُ ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ بِسِيمَـٰهُمْ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِٱلنَّوَٰصِى وَٱلْأَقْدَامِ٤١
Saheeh InternationalThe criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet.
Abdel HaleemThe guilty will be known by their mark and will be seized by their foreheads and their feet.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٤٢
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
هَـٰذِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ ٱلَّتِى يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ٤٣
Saheeh InternationalThis is Hell, which the criminals deny.
Abdel HaleemThis is the Hell the guilty deny,
يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٍ٤٤
Saheeh InternationalThey will circulate between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree].
Abdel Haleembut they will go round between its flames and scalding water.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٤٥
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ٤٦
Saheeh InternationalBut for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens -
Abdel HaleemFor those who fear [the time when they will] stand before their Lord there are two gardens.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٤٧
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
ذَوَاتَآ أَفْنَانٍ٤٨
Saheeh InternationalHaving [spreading] branches.
Abdel HaleemWith shading branches.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٤٩
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ تَجْرِيَانِ٥٠
Saheeh InternationalIn both of them are two springs, flowing.
Abdel HaleemWith a pair of flowing springs.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٥١
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِمَا مِن كُلِّ فَـٰكِهَةٍ زَوْجَانِ٥٢
Saheeh InternationalIn both of them are of every fruit, two kinds.
Abdel HaleemWith every kind of fruit in pairs.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٥٣
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ فُرُشٍۭ بَطَآئِنُهَا مِنْ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ ۚ وَجَنَى ٱلْجَنَّتَيْنِ دَانٍ٥٤
Saheeh International[They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low.
Abdel HaleemThey will sit on couches upholstered with brocade, the fruit of both gardens within easy reach.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٥٥
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِنَّ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّ٥٦
Saheeh InternationalIn them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinnī -
Abdel HaleemThere will be maidens restraining their glances, untouched beforehand by man or jinn.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٥٧
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
كَأَنَّهُنَّ ٱلْيَاقُوتُ وَٱلْمَرْجَانُ٥٨
Saheeh InternationalAs if they were rubies and coral.
Abdel HaleemLike rubies and brilliant pearls.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٥٩
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
هَلْ جَزَآءُ ٱلْإِحْسَـٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلْإِحْسَـٰنُ٦٠
Saheeh InternationalIs the reward for good [anything] but good?
Abdel HaleemShall the reward of good be anything but good?
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٦١
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
وَمِن دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ٦٢
Saheeh InternationalAnd below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens -
Abdel HaleemThere are two other gardens below these two.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٦٣
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
مُدْهَآمَّتَانِ٦٤
Saheeh InternationalDark green [in color].
Abdel HaleemBoth of deepest green.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٦٥
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ٦٦
Saheeh InternationalIn both of them are two springs, spouting.
Abdel HaleemWith a pair of gushing springs.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٦٧
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِمَا فَـٰكِهَةٌ وَنَخْلٌ وَرُمَّانٌ٦٨
Saheeh InternationalIn both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.
Abdel HaleemWith fruits- date palms and pomegranate trees.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٦٩
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
فِيهِنَّ خَيْرَٰتٌ حِسَانٌ٧٠
Saheeh InternationalIn them are good and beautiful women -
Abdel HaleemThere are good-natured, beautiful maidens.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٧١
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
حُورٌ مَّقْصُورَٰتٌ فِى ٱلْخِيَامِ٧٢
Saheeh InternationalFair ones reserved in pavilions -
Abdel HaleemDark-eyed, sheltered in pavilions.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٧٣
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّ٧٤
Saheeh InternationalUntouched before them by man or jinnī -
Abdel HaleemUntouched beforehand by man or jinn.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٧٥
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَعَبْقَرِىٍّ حِسَانٍ٧٦
Saheeh InternationalReclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.
Abdel HaleemThey will all sit on green cushions and fine carpets.
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ٧٧
Saheeh InternationalSo which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
Abdel HaleemWhich, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?
تَبَـٰرَكَ ٱسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِى ٱلْجَلَـٰلِ وَٱلْإِكْرَامِ٧٨
Saheeh InternationalBlessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
Abdel HaleemBlessed is the name of your Lord, full of majesty, bestowing honour.
