Al-Qamar

The Moon

Saheeh InternationalThe Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].

Abdel HaleemThe Hour draws near; the moon is split in two.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."

Abdel HaleemWhenever the disbelievers see a sign, they turn away and say, ‘Same old sorcery!’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.

Abdel HaleemThey reject the truth and follow their own desires––everything is recorded––

Saheeh InternationalAnd there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.

Abdel Haleemalthough warning tales that should have restrained them have come down to them––

Saheeh InternationalExtensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].

Abdel Haleemfarreaching wisdom––but these warnings do not help:

Saheeh InternationalSo leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding,

Abdel Haleemso [Prophet] turn away from them. On the Day the Summoner will summon them to a horrific event,

Saheeh InternationalTheir eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,

Abdel Haleemeyes downcast, they will come out of their graves like swarming locusts

Saheeh InternationalRacing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."

Abdel Haleemrushing towards the Summoner. The disbelievers will cry, ‘This is a stern day!’

Saheeh InternationalThe people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.

Abdel HaleemThe people of Noah rejected the truth before them: they rejected Our servant, saying, ‘He is mad!’ Noah was rebuked,

Saheeh InternationalSo he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."

Abdel Haleemand so he called upon his Lord, ‘I am defeated: help me!’

Saheeh InternationalThen We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

Abdel HaleemSo We opened the gates of the sky with torrential water,

Saheeh InternationalAnd caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.

Abdel Haleemburst the earth with gushing springs: the waters met for a preordained purpose.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,

Abdel HaleemWe carried him along on a vessel of planks and nails

Saheeh InternationalSailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.

Abdel Haleemthat floated under Our watchful eye, a reward for the one who had been rejected.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?

Abdel HaleemWe have left this as a sign: will anyone take heed?

Saheeh InternationalAnd how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Abdel HaleemHow [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Abdel HaleemWe have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed?

Saheeh InternationalʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Abdel HaleemThe people of 'Ad also rejected the truth. How [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,

Abdel HaleemWe released a howling wind against them on a day of terrible disaster;

Saheeh InternationalExtracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

Abdel Haleemit swept people away like uprooted palm trunks.

Saheeh InternationalThamūd denied the warning.

Abdel HaleemThe people of Thamud also rejected the warnings:

Saheeh InternationalAnd said, "Is it one human being among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

Abdel Haleemthey said, ‘What? A man? Why should we follow a lone man from amongst ourselves? That would be misguided; quite insane!

Saheeh InternationalHas the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."

Abdel HaleemWould a mes-sage be given to him alone out of all of us? No, he is an insolent liar!’

Saheeh InternationalThey will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

Abdel Haleem‘Tomorrow they will know who is the insolent liar,

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.

Abdel Haleemfor We shall send them a she-camel to test them: so watch them [Salih] and be patient.

Saheeh InternationalAnd inform them that the water is shared between them, each [day of] drink attended [by turn].

Abdel HaleemTell them the water is to be shared between them: each one should drink in turn.’

Saheeh InternationalBut they called their companion, and he dared and hamstrung [her].

Abdel HaleemBut they called their companion, who took a sword and hamstrung the camel.

Saheeh InternationalAnd how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

Abdel HaleemHow [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.

Abdel HaleemWe released a single mighty blast against them and they ended up like a fencemaker’s dry sticks.

Saheeh InternationalThe people of Lot denied the warning.

Abdel HaleemThe people of Lot rejected the warnings.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.

Abdel HaleemWe released a stonebearing wind against them, all except the family of Lot. We saved them before dawn

Saheeh InternationalAs favor from Us. Thus do We reward he who is grateful.

Abdel Haleemas a favour from Us: this is how We reward the thankful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning.

Abdel HaleemHe warned them of Our onslaught, but they dismissed the warning-

Saheeh InternationalAnd they had demanded from him his guests, but We obliterated their eyes, [saying], "Taste My punishment and warning."

Abdel Haleemthey even demanded his guests from him- so We sealed their eyes- ‘ Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’-

Saheeh InternationalAnd there came upon them by morning an abiding punishment.

Saheeh InternationalSo taste My punishment and warning.

Abdel Haleem‘Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

Saheeh InternationalAnd there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.

Abdel HaleemThe people of Pharaoh also received warnings.

Saheeh InternationalThey denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.

Abdel HaleemThey rejected all Our signs so We seized them with all Our might and power.

Saheeh InternationalAre your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?

Abdel Haleem‘Are your disbelievers any better than these? Were you given an exemption in the Scripture?’

Saheeh InternationalOr do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?

Abdel HaleemDo they perhaps say, ‘We are a great army and we shall be victorious’?

Saheeh International[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].

Abdel HaleemTheir forces will be routed and they will turn tail and flee.

Saheeh InternationalBut the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.

Abdel HaleemBut the Hour is their appointed time- the Hour is more severe and bitter:

Saheeh InternationalAnd Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.

Abdel Haleemwhen We ordain something it happens at once, in the blink of an eye;

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already destroyed your kinds, so is there any who will remember?

Abdel HaleemWe have destroyed the likes of you in the past. Will anyone take heed?

Saheeh InternationalAnd everything they did is in written records.

Abdel HaleemEverything they do is noted in their records:

Saheeh InternationalAnd every small and great [thing] is inscribed.

Abdel Haleemevery action, great or small, is recorded.
