Al-Waqi'ah

The Inevitable

الواقعة

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ۝١

Saheeh InternationalWhen the Occurrence occurs,

Abdel HaleemWhen that which is coming arrives,

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalThere is, at its occurrence, no denial.

Abdel Haleemno one will be able to deny it has come,

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalIt will bring down [some] and raise up [others].

Abdel Haleembringing low and raising high.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا۝٤

Saheeh InternationalWhen the earth is shaken with convulsion

Abdel HaleemWhen the earth is shaken violently

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا۝٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd the mountains are broken down, crumbling

Abdel Haleemand the mountains are ground to powder

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا۝٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd become dust dispersing,

Abdel Haleemand turn to scattered dust,

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd you become [of] three kinds:

Abdel Haleemthen you will be sorted into three classes.

فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalThen the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?

Abdel HaleemThose on the Right––what people they are!

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?

Abdel HaleemThose on the Left––what people they are!

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd the forerunners, the forerunners -

Abdel HaleemAnd those in front––ahead indeed!

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalThose are the ones brought near [to Allāh]

Abdel HaleemFor these will be the ones brought nearest to God

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalIn the Gardens of Pleasure,

Abdel Haleemin Gardens of Bliss:

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalA [large] company of the former peoples

Abdel Haleemmany from the past

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd a few of the later peoples,

Abdel Haleemand a few from later generations.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalOn thrones woven [with ornament],

Abdel HaleemOn couches of well-woven cloth

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalReclining on them, facing each other.

Abdel Haleemthey will sit facing each other;

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalThere will circulate among them young boys made eternal.

Abdel Haleemeverlasting youths will go round among them

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalWith vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -

Abdel Haleemwith glasses, flagons, and cups of a pure drink

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalNo headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -

Abdel Haleemthat causes no headache or intoxication;

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd fruit of what they select

Abdel Haleem[there will be] any fruit they choose;

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalAnd the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.

Abdel Haleemthe meat of any bird they like;

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ۝٢٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,

Abdel Haleemand beautiful companions

كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalThe likenesses of pearls well-protected,

Abdel Haleemlike hidden pearls:

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ۝٢٤

Saheeh InternationalAs reward for what they used to do.

Abdel Haleema reward for what they used to do.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalThey will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -

Abdel HaleemThey will hear no idle or sinful talk there,

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalOnly a saying [of] peace, peace.

Abdel Haleemonly clean and wholesome speech.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalThe companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?

Abdel HaleemThose on the Right, what people they are!

فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ۝٢٨

Saheeh International[They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed.

Abdel HaleemThey will dwell amid thornless lote trees

وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ۝٢٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd [banana] trees layered [with fruit].

Abdel Haleemand clustered acacia

وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ۝٣٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd shade extended.

Abdel Haleemwith spreading shade,

وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ۝٣١

Saheeh InternationalAnd water poured out

Abdel Haleemconstantly flowing water,

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ۝٣٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd fruit, abundant [and varied],

Abdel Haleemabundant fruits,

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ۝٣٣

Saheeh InternationalNeither limited [to season] nor forbidden,

Abdel Haleemunfailing, unforbidden,

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ۝٣٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd [upon] beds raised high.

Abdel Haleemwith incomparable companions

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً۝٣٥

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation

Abdel HaleemWe have specially created––

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا۝٣٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd made them virgins,

Abdel Haleemvirginal,

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا۝٣٧

Saheeh InternationalDevoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,

Abdel Haleemloving, of matching age––

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ۝٣٨

Saheeh InternationalFor the companions of the right [who are]

Abdel Haleemfor those on the Right,

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ۝٣٩

Saheeh InternationalA company of the former peoples

Abdel Haleemmany from the past

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ۝٤٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd a company of the later peoples.

Abdel Haleemand many from later generations.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ۝٤١

Saheeh InternationalAnd the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

Abdel HaleemBut those on the Left, what people they are!

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ۝٤٢

Saheeh International[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water

Abdel HaleemThey will dwell amid scorching wind and scalding water

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ۝٤٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd a shade of black smoke,

Abdel Haleemin the shadow of black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ۝٤٤

Saheeh InternationalNeither cool nor beneficial.

Abdel Haleemneither cool nor refreshing.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ۝٤٥

Saheeh InternationalIndeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

Abdel HaleemBefore, they overindulged in luxury

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ۝٤٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd they used to persist in the great violation,

Abdel Haleemand persisted in great sin,

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ۝٤٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

Abdel Haleemalways saying, ‘What? When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ۝٤٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd our forefathers [as well]?"

Abdel HaleemAnd our earliest forefathers too?’

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ۝٤٩

Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples

Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘The earliest and latest generations

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ۝٥٠

Saheeh InternationalAre to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."

Abdel Haleemwill all be gathered on a predetermined Day

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ۝٥١

Saheeh InternationalThen indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,

Abdel Haleemand you who have gone astray and denied the truth

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ۝٥٢

Saheeh InternationalWill be eating from trees of zaqqūm

Abdel Haleemwill eat from the bitter tree of Zaqqum,

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ۝٥٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd filling with it your bellies

Abdel Haleemfilling your bellies with it,

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ۝٥٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd drinking on top of it from scalding water.

Abdel Haleemand drink scalding water,

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ۝٥٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

Abdel Haleemlapping it like thirsty camels.’

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ۝٥٦

Saheeh InternationalThat is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.

Abdel HaleemThis will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ۝٥٧

Saheeh InternationalWe have created you, so why do you not believe?

Abdel HaleemIt was We who created you: will you not believe?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ۝٥٨

Saheeh InternationalHave you seen that which you emit?

Abdel HaleemConsider [the semen] you eject-

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ۝٥٩

Saheeh InternationalIs it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?

Abdel Haleemdo you create it yourselves or are We the Creator?

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ۝٦٠

Saheeh InternationalWe have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone

Abdel HaleemWe ordained death to be among you. Nothing could stop Us

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ۝٦١

Saheeh InternationalIn that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.

Abdel Haleemif We intended to change you and recreate you in a way unknown to you.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ۝٦٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?

Abdel HaleemYou have learned how you were first created: will you not reflect?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ۝٦٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd have you seen that [seed] which you sow?

Abdel HaleemConsider the seeds you sow in the ground-

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ۝٦٤

Saheeh InternationalIs it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?

Abdel Haleemis it you who make them grow or We?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ۝٦٥

Saheeh InternationalIf We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,

Abdel HaleemIf We wished, We could turn your harvest into chaff and leave you to wail,

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ۝٦٦

Saheeh International[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;

Abdel Haleem‘We are burdened with debt;

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ۝٦٧

Saheeh InternationalRather, we have been deprived."

Abdel Haleemwe are bereft.’

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ۝٦٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd have you seen the water that you drink?

Abdel HaleemConsider the water you drink-

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ۝٦٩

Saheeh InternationalIs it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?

Abdel Haleemwas it you who brought it down from the rain-cloud or We?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ۝٧٠

Saheeh InternationalIf We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

Abdel HaleemIf We wanted, We could make it bitter: will you not be thankful?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ۝٧١

Saheeh InternationalAnd have you seen the fire that you ignite?

Abdel HaleemConsider the fire you kindle-

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ۝٧٢

Saheeh InternationalIs it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?

Abdel Haleemis it you who make the wood for it grow or We?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ۝٧٣

Saheeh InternationalWe have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,

Abdel HaleemWe made it a reminder, and useful to those who kindle it,

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ۝٧٤

Saheeh InternationalSo exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

Abdel Haleemso [Prophet] glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.

۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ۝٧٥

Saheeh InternationalThen I swear by the setting of the stars,

Abdel HaleemI swear by the positions of the stars-

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ۝٧٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.

Abdel Haleema mighty oath, if you only knew-

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ۝٧٧

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.

Abdel Haleemthat this is truly a noble Quran,

فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ۝٧٨

Saheeh InternationalIn a Register well-protected;.

Abdel Haleemin a protected Record

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ۝٧٩

Saheeh InternationalNone touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].

Abdel Haleemthat only the purified can touch,

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ۝٨٠

Saheeh International[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

Abdel Haleemsent down from the Lord of all being.

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ۝٨١

Saheeh InternationalThen is it to this statement that you are indifferent

Abdel HaleemHow can you scorn this statement?

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ۝٨٢

Saheeh InternationalAnd make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?

Abdel HaleemAnd how, in return for the livelihood you are given, can you deny it?

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ۝٨٣

Saheeh InternationalThen why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat

Abdel HaleemWhen the soul of a dying man comes up to his throat

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ۝٨٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd you are at that time looking on -

Abdel Haleemwhile you gaze on-

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ۝٨٥

Saheeh InternationalAnd We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -

Abdel HaleemWe are nearer to him than you, though you do not see Us-

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ۝٨٦

Saheeh InternationalThen why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

Abdel Haleemwhy, if you are not to be judged,

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ۝٨٧

Saheeh InternationalBring it back, if you should be truthful?

Abdel Haleemdo you not restore his soul to him, if what you say is true?

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ۝٨٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],

Abdel HaleemIf that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to God,

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ۝٨٩

Saheeh InternationalThen [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.

Abdel Haleemhe will have rest, ease, and a Garden of Bliss;

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ۝٩٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd if he was of the companions of the right,

Abdel Haleemif he is one of those on the Right,

فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ۝٩١

Saheeh InternationalThen [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."

Abdel Haleem[he will hear], ‘Peace be on you,’ from his companions on the Right;

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ۝٩٢

Saheeh InternationalBut if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,

Abdel Haleembut if he is one of those who denied the truth and went astray,

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ۝٩٣

Saheeh InternationalThen [for him is] accommodation of scalding water

Abdel Haleemhe will be welcomed with scalding water.

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ۝٩٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd burning in Hellfire.

Abdel HaleemHe will burn in Hell.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ۝٩٥

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, this is the true certainty,

Abdel HaleemThis is the certain truth:

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ۝٩٦

Saheeh InternationalSo exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], glorify the name of your Lord the Supreme.
