The Winnowing Winds

Saheeh InternationalBy the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]

Abdel HaleemBy those [winds] that scatter far and wide,

Saheeh InternationalAnd the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

Abdel Haleemand those that are heavily laden,

Saheeh InternationalAnd the ships sailing with ease

Abdel Haleemthat speed freely,

Saheeh InternationalAnd the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,

Abdel Haleemthat distribute [rain] as ordained!

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, what you are promised is true.

Abdel HaleemWhat you [people] are promised is true:

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, the recompense is to occur.

Abdel Haleemthe Judgement will come––

Saheeh InternationalBy the heaven containing pathways,

Abdel Haleemby the sky with its pathways,

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, you are in differing speech.

Abdel Haleemyou differ in what you say––

Saheeh InternationalDeluded away from it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is he who is deluded.

Abdel Haleemthose who turn away from it are [truly] deceived.

Saheeh InternationalDestroyed are the misinformers

Abdel HaleemPerish the liars,

Saheeh InternationalWho are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.

Abdel Haleemthose steeped in error and unaware!

Saheeh InternationalThey ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"

Abdel HaleemThey ask, ‘When is this Judgement Day coming?’

Saheeh International[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.

Abdel HaleemOn a Day when they will be punished by the Fire,

Saheeh International[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."

Abdel Haleem‘Taste the punishment! This is what you wished to hasten.’

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs,

Abdel HaleemThe righteous will be in Gardens with [flowing] springs.

Saheeh InternationalAccepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.

Abdel HaleemThey will receive their Lord’s gifts because of the good they did before:

Saheeh InternationalThey used to sleep but little of the night,

Abdel Haleemsleeping only little at night,

Saheeh InternationalAnd in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,

Abdel Haleempraying at dawn for God’s forgiveness,

Saheeh InternationalAnd from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.

Abdel Haleemgiving a rightful share of their wealth to the beggar and the deprived.

Saheeh InternationalAnd on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]

Abdel HaleemOn earth there are signs for those with sure faith––

Saheeh InternationalAnd in yourselves. Then will you not see?

Abdel Haleemand in yourselves too, do you not see?––

Saheeh InternationalAnd in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.

Abdel Haleemin the sky is your sustenance and all that you are promised.

Saheeh InternationalThen by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.

Abdel HaleemBy the Lord of the heavens and earth! All this is as real as your speaking.

Saheeh InternationalHas there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham? -

Abdel Haleem[Muhammad], have you heard the story of the honoured guests of Abraham?

Saheeh InternationalWhen they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."

Abdel HaleemThey went in to see him and said, ‘Peace.’ ‘Peace,’ he said, [adding to himself] ‘These people are strangers.’

Saheeh InternationalThen he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.

Abdel HaleemHe turned quickly to his household, brought out a fat calf,

Saheeh InternationalAnd placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"

Abdel Haleemand placed it before them. ‘Will you not eat?’ he said,

Saheeh InternationalAnd he felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.

Abdel Haleembeginning to be afraid of them, but they said, ‘Do not be afraid.’ They gave him good news of a son who would be gifted with knowledge.

Saheeh InternationalAnd his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"

Abdel HaleemHis wife then entered with a loud cry, struck her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman?’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."

Abdel Haleembut they said, ‘It will be so. This is what your Lord said, and He is the Wise, the All Knowing.’

Saheeh International[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

Abdel HaleemAbraham said, ‘What is your errand, messengers?’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals

Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘We are sent to a people lost in sin,

Saheeh InternationalTo send down upon them stones of clay,

Abdel Haleemto bring down rocks of clay,

Saheeh InternationalMarked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."

Abdel Haleemmarked by your Lord for those who exceed all bounds.’

Saheeh InternationalSo We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.

Abdel HaleemWe brought out such believers as were there-

Saheeh InternationalAnd We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.

Abdel HaleemWe found only one household devoted to God-

Saheeh InternationalAnd We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

Abdel Haleemand left the town to be a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

Saheeh InternationalAnd in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

Abdel HaleemThere is another sign in Moses: We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

Saheeh InternationalBut he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."

Abdel HaleemPharaoh turned away with his supporters, saying, ‘This is a sorcerer, or maybe a madman,’

Saheeh InternationalSo We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.

Abdel Haleemso We seized him and his forces and threw them into the sea: he was to blame.

Saheeh InternationalAnd in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.

Abdel HaleemThere is another sign in the Ad: We sent the life-destroying wind against them

Saheeh InternationalIt left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

Abdel Haleemand it reduced everything it came up against to shreds.

Saheeh InternationalAnd in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."

Abdel HaleemAnd also in the Thamud: it was said to them, ‘Make the most of your lives for a while,’

Saheeh InternationalBut they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.

Abdel Haleembut they rebelled against their Lord’s command, so the blast took them. They looked on helplessly:

Saheeh InternationalAnd they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.

Abdel Haleemthey could not even remain standing, let alone defend themselves.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.

Abdel HaleemBefore that We destroyed the people of Noah. They were a truly sinful people!

Saheeh InternationalAnd the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.

Abdel HaleemWe built the heavens with Our power and made them vast,

Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.

Abdel HaleemWe spread out the earth- how well We smoothed it out!-

Saheeh InternationalAnd of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.

Abdel Haleemand We created pairs of all things so that you [people] might take note.

Saheeh InternationalSo flee to Allāh. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

Abdel Haleem[So, say to them, Prophet], ‘Quickly, turn to God- I am sent by Him to give you clear warning-

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

Abdel Haleemand do not set up any other god alongside Him. I am sent by Him to give you clear warning!’

Saheeh InternationalSimilarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."

Abdel HaleemEvery previous people to whom a messenger was sent also said, ‘A sor-cerer, or maybe a madman!’

Saheeh InternationalDid they suggest it to them? Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.

Abdel HaleemDid they tell one another to do this? No! They are a people who exceed all bounds,

Saheeh InternationalSo leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.

Abdel Haleemso ignore them [Prophet]- you are not to blame-

Saheeh InternationalAnd remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.

Abdel Haleemand go on reminding [people], it is good for those who believe to be reminded.

Saheeh InternationalAnd I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

Abdel HaleemI created jinn and mankind only to worship Me:

Saheeh InternationalI do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

Abdel HaleemI want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me-

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.

Abdel HaleemGod is the Provider, the Lord of Power, the Ever Mighty.

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.

Abdel HaleemThe evildoers, like their predecessors, will have a share of punishment- they need not ask Me to hasten it-

Saheeh InternationalAnd woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.

Abdel Haleemand woe betide those who deny the truth on the Day they have been promised.
