قٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْمَجِيدِ۝١

Saheeh InternationalQāf. By the honored Qur’ān...

Abdel HaleemQaf By the glorious Quran!

بَلْ عَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا شَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌ۝٢

Saheeh InternationalBut they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say, "This is an amazing thing.

Abdel HaleemBut the disbelievers are amazed that a warner has come from among them and they say, ‘How strange!

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا ۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجْعٌۢ بَعِيدٌ۝٣

Saheeh InternationalWhen we have died and have become dust, [we will return to life]? That is a distant [i.e., unlikely] return."

Abdel HaleemTo come back [to life] after we have died and become dust? That is too farfetched.’

قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَـٰبٌ حَفِيظٌۢ۝٤

Saheeh InternationalWe know what the earth diminishes [i.e., consumes] of them, and with Us is a retaining record.

Abdel HaleemWe know very well what the earth takes away from them: We keep a comprehensive record.

بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ فَهُمْ فِىٓ أَمْرٍ مَّرِيجٍ۝٥

Saheeh InternationalBut they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused condition.

Abdel HaleemBut the disbelievers deny the truth when it comes to them; they are in a state of confusion.

أَفَلَمْ يَنظُرُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَيْفَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِن فُرُوجٍ۝٦

Saheeh InternationalHave they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and [how] it has no rifts?

Abdel HaleemDo they not see the sky above them––how We have built and adorned it, with no rifts in it;

وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍۭ بَهِيجٍ۝٧

Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind,

Abdel Haleemhow We spread out the earth and put solid mountains on it, and caused every kind of joyous plant to grow in it,

تَبْصِرَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍ۝٨

Saheeh InternationalGiving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allāh].

Abdel Haleemas a lesson and reminder for every servant who turns to God;

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً مُّبَـٰرَكًا فَأَنۢبَتْنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٍ وَحَبَّ ٱلْحَصِيدِ۝٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest

Abdel Haleemand how We send blessed water down from the sky and grow with it gardens, the harvest grain,

وَٱلنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَـٰتٍ لَّهَا طَلْعٌ نَّضِيدٌ۝١٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd lofty palm trees having fruit arranged in layers -

Abdel Haleemand tall palm trees laden with clusters of dates,

رِّزْقًا لِّلْعِبَادِ ۖ وَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِۦ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخُرُوجُ۝١١

Saheeh InternationalAs provision for the servants, and We have given life thereby to a dead land. Thus is the emergence [i.e., resurrection].

Abdel Haleemas a provision for everyone; how with water We give [new] life to a land that is dead? This is how the dead will emerge [from their graves].

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُ۝١٢

Saheeh InternationalThe people of Noah denied before them, and the companions of the well and Thamūd

Abdel HaleemThe people of Noah disbelieved long before these disbelievers, as did the people of Rass, Thamud,

وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ وَإِخْوَٰنُ لُوطٍ۝١٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd ʿAad and Pharaoh and the brothers [i.e., people] of Lot

Abdel HaleemAd, Pharaoh, Lot,

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ ۚ كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ۝١٤

Saheeh InternationalAnd the companions of the thicket and the people of Tubbaʿ. All denied the messengers, so My threat was justly fulfilled.

Abdel Haleemthe Forest-Dwellers, Tubba: all of these people disbelieved their messengers, and so My warning was realized.

أَفَعَيِينَا بِٱلْخَلْقِ ٱلْأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى لَبْسٍ مِّنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ۝١٥

Saheeh InternationalDid We fail in the first creation? But they are in confusion over a new creation.

Abdel HaleemSo were We incapable of the first creation? No indeed! Yet they doubt a second creation.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفْسُهُۥ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ ٱلْوَرِيدِ۝١٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

Abdel HaleemWe created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––

إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ۝١٧

Saheeh InternationalWhen the two receivers [i.e., recording angels] receive, seated on the right and on the left.

Abdel Haleemwith two receptors set to record, one on his right side and one on his left:

مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌ۝١٨

Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., man] utters no word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].

Abdel Haleemhe does not utter a single word without an ever-present watcher.

وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ۝١٩

Saheeh InternationalAnd the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.

Abdel HaleemThe trance of death will bring the Truth with it: ‘This is what you tried to escape.’

وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْوَعِيدِ۝٢٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat.

Abdel HaleemThe Trumpet will be sounded: ‘This is the Day [you were] warned of.’

وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ۝٢١

Saheeh InternationalAnd every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness.

Abdel HaleemEach person will arrive attended by an [angel] to drive him on and another to bear witness:

لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِى غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌ۝٢٢

Saheeh International[It will be said], "You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp."

Abdel Haleem‘You paid no attention to this [Day]; but today We have removed your veil and your sight is sharp.’

وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَـٰذَا مَا لَدَىَّ عَتِيدٌ۝٢٣

Saheeh InternationalAnd his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."

Abdel HaleemThe person’s attendant will say, ‘Here is what I have prepared’-

أَلْقِيَا فِى جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ۝٢٤

Saheeh International[Allāh will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,

Abdel Haleem‘Hurl every obstinate disbeliever into Hell,

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُّرِيبٍ۝٢٥

Saheeh InternationalPreventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,

Abdel Haleemeveryone who hindered good, was aggressive, caused others to doubt,

ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلْقِيَاهُ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِ۝٢٦

Saheeh InternationalWho made [as equal] with Allāh another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."

Abdel Haleemand set up other gods alongside God. Hurl him into severe punishment!’-

۞ قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطْغَيْتُهُۥ وَلَـٰكِن كَانَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍ۝٢٧

Saheeh InternationalHis [devil] companion will say, "Our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he [himself] was in extreme error."

Abdel Haleemand his [evil] companion will say, ‘Lord, I did not make him transgress; he had already gone far astray himself.’

قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا۟ لَدَىَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُم بِٱلْوَعِيدِ۝٢٨

Saheeh International[Allāh] will say, "Do not dispute before Me, while I had already presented to you the threat [i.e., warning].

Abdel HaleemGod will say, ‘Do not argue in My presence. I sent you a warning

مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلْقَوْلُ لَدَىَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّـٰمٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ۝٢٩

Saheeh InternationalThe word [i.e., decree] will not be changed with Me, and never will I be unjust to the servants."

Abdel Haleemand My word cannot be changed: I am not unjust to any creature.’

يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍ۝٣٠

Saheeh InternationalOn the Day We will say to Hell, "Have you been filled?" and it will say, "Are there some more,"

Abdel HaleemWe shall say to Hell on that day, ‘Are you full?’ and it will reply, ‘Are there no more?’

وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ۝٣١

Saheeh InternationalAnd Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far,

Abdel HaleemBut Paradise will be brought close to the righteous and will no longer be distant:

هَـٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٍ۝٣٢

Saheeh International[It will be said], "This is what you were promised - for every returner [to Allāh] and keeper [of His covenant].

Abdel Haleem‘This is what you were promised––this is for everyone who turned often to God and kept Him in mind,

مَّنْ خَشِىَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُّنِيبٍ۝٣٣

Saheeh InternationalWho feared the Most Merciful in the unseen and came with a heart returning [in repentance].

Abdel Haleemwho held the Most Gracious in awe, though He is unseen, who comes before Him with a heart turned to Him in devotion-

ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُلُودِ۝٣٤

Saheeh InternationalEnter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity."

Abdel Haleemso enter it in peace. This is the Day of everlasting Life.’

لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ۝٣٥

Saheeh InternationalThey will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.

Abdel HaleemThey will have all that they wish for there, and We have more for them.

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍ۝٣٦

Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape?

Abdel HaleemWe have destroyed even mightier generations before these disbelievers, who travelled through [many] lands- was there any escape?

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌ۝٣٧

Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].

Abdel HaleemThere truly is a reminder in this for whoever has a heart, whoever listens attentively.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٍ۝٣٨

Saheeh InternationalAnd We did certainly create the heavens and earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.

Abdel HaleemWe created the heavens, the earth, and everything between, in six Days without tiring.

فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِ۝٣٩

Saheeh InternationalSo be patient, [O Muḥammad], over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting,

Abdel HaleemSo [Prophet], bear everything they say with patience; celebrate the praise of your Lord before the rising and setting of the sun;

وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَـٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِ۝٤٠

Saheeh InternationalAnd [in part] of the night exalt Him and after prostration [i.e., prayer].

Abdel Haleemproclaim His praise in the night and at the end of every prayer;

وَٱسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ ٱلْمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ۝٤١

Saheeh InternationalAnd listen on the Day when the Caller will call out from a place that is near -

Abdel Haleemlisten out for the Day when the caller will call from a nearby place.

يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيْحَةَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُرُوجِ۝٤٢

Saheeh InternationalThe Day they will hear the blast [of the Horn] in truth. That is the Day of Emergence [from the graves].

Abdel HaleemThey will come out [from their graves] on that Day, the Day when they hear the mighty blast in reality.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا ٱلْمَصِيرُ۝٤٣

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and to Us is the destination

Abdel HaleemIt is We who give life and death; the final return will be to Us

يَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلْأَرْضُ عَنْهُمْ سِرَاعًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ حَشْرٌ عَلَيْنَا يَسِيرٌ۝٤٤

Saheeh InternationalOn the Day the earth breaks away from them [and they emerge] rapidly; that is a gathering easy for Us.

Abdel Haleemon the Day when the earth will be torn apart, letting them rush out- that gathering will be easy for Us.

نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِجَبَّارٍ ۖ فَذَكِّرْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَن يَخَافُ وَعِيدِ۝٤٥

Saheeh InternationalWe are most knowing of what they say, and you are not over them a tyrant. But remind by the Qur’ān whoever fears My threat.

Abdel HaleemWe know best what the disbelievers say. You [Prophet] are not there to force them, so remind, with this Quran, those who fear My warning.
