Al-Hijr

The Rocky Tract

Saheeh InternationalAlif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

Abdel HaleemAlif Lam Ra These are the verses of the Scripture, a Quran that makes things clear.

Saheeh InternationalPerhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers may well come to wish they had submitted to God,

Saheeh InternationalLet them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

Abdel Haleemso [Prophet] leave them to eat and enjoy themselves. Let [false] hopes distract them: they will come to know.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

Abdel HaleemNever have We destroyed a community that did not have a set time;

Saheeh InternationalNo nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

Abdel Haleemno community can bring its time forward, nor delay it.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

Abdel HaleemThey say, ‘Receiver of this Quran! You are definitely mad.

Saheeh InternationalWhy do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

Abdel HaleemWhy do you not bring us the angels, if you are telling the truth?’

Saheeh InternationalWe do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

Abdel HaleemBut We send down the angels only to bring justice and then these people will not be reprieved.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

Abdel HaleemWe have sent down the Quran Ourself, and We Ourself will guard it. Even before you [Prophet],

Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

Abdel HaleemWe sent messengers among the various communities of old,

Saheeh InternationalAnd no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

Abdel Haleembut they mocked every single messenger that came to them:

Saheeh InternationalThus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

Abdel Haleemin this way We make the message slip through the hearts of evildoers.

Saheeh InternationalThey will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

Abdel HaleemThey will not believe in it. That was what happened with the peoples of long ago,

Saheeh InternationalAnd [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

Abdel Haleemand even if We opened a gateway into Heaven for them and they rose through it, higher and higher,

Saheeh InternationalThey would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

Abdel Haleemthey would still say, ‘Our eyes are hallucinating. We are bewitched.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

Abdel HaleemWe have set constellations up in the sky and made it beautiful for all to see,

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]

Abdel Haleemand guarded it from every stoned satan:

Saheeh InternationalExcept one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

Abdel Haleemany eavesdropper will be pursued by a clearly visible flame.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

Abdel HaleemAs for the earth, We have spread it out, set firm mountains on it, and made everything grow there in due balance.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

Abdel HaleemWe have provided sustenance in it for you and for all those creatures for whom you do not provide.

Saheeh InternationalAnd there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.

Abdel HaleemThere is not a thing whose storehouses are not with Us. We send it down only according to a well-defined measure:

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

Abdel HaleemWe send the winds to fertilize, and We bring down water from the sky for you to drink- you do not control its sources.

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

Abdel HaleemIt is We who give life and death; it is We who inherit [everything].

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

Abdel HaleemWe know exactly those of you who come first and those who come later.

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], it is your Lord who will gather them all together: He is all wise, all knowing.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

Abdel HaleemWe created man out of dried clay formed from dark mud-

Saheeh InternationalAnd the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

Abdel Haleemthe jinn We created before, from the fire of scorching wind.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

Abdel HaleemYour Lord said to the angels, ‘I will create a mortal out of dried clay, formed from dark mud.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."

Abdel HaleemWhen I have fashioned him and breathed My spirit into him, bow down before him,’

Saheeh InternationalSo the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

Abdel Haleemand the angels all did so.

Saheeh InternationalExcept Iblees; he refused to be with those who prostrated.

Abdel HaleemBut not Iblis: he refused to bow down like the others.

Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

Abdel HaleemGod said, ‘Iblis, why did you not bow down like the others?’

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."

Abdel Haleemand he answered, ‘I will not bow to a mortal You created from dried clay, formed from dark mud.’

Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "Then depart from it, for indeed, you are expelled.

Abdel Haleem‘Get out of here!’ said God. ‘You are an outcast,

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

Abdel Haleemrejected until the Day of Judgement.’

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

Abdel HaleemIblis said, ‘My Lord, give me respite until the Day when they are raised from the dead.’

Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

Abdel Haleem‘You have respite,’ said God,

Saheeh InternationalUntil the Day of the time well-known."

Abdel Haleem‘until the Day of the Appointed Time.’

Saheeh International[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them [i.e., mankind] on earth, and I will mislead them all

Abdel HaleemIblis then said to God, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lure mankind on earth and put them in the wrong,

Saheeh InternationalExcept, among them, Your chosen servants."

Abdel Haleemall except Your devoted servants.’

Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.

Abdel HaleemGod said, ‘[Devotion] is a straight path to Me:

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

Abdel Haleemyou will have no power over My servants, only over the ones who go astray and follow you.

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.

Abdel HaleemHell is the promised place for all these,

Saheeh InternationalIt has seven gates; for every gate is of them [i.e., Satan's followers] a portion designated."

Abdel Haleemwith seven gates, each gate having its allotted share of them.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs,

Abdel HaleemBut the righteous will be in Gardens with springs-

Saheeh International[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."

Abdel Haleem“Enter them in peace and safety!”––

Saheeh InternationalAnd We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.

Abdel Haleemand We shall remove any bitterness from their hearts: [they will be like] brothers, sitting on couches, face to face.

Saheeh InternationalNo fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.

Abdel HaleemNo weariness will ever touch them there, nor will they ever be expelled.’

Saheeh International[O Muḥammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful,

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], tell My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful,

Saheeh InternationalAnd that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.

Abdel Haleembut My torment is the truly painful one.

Saheeh InternationalAnd inform them about the guests of Abraham,

Abdel HaleemTell them too about Abraham’s guests:

Saheeh InternationalWhen they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."

Abdel Haleemwhen they came to him and said, ‘Peace,’ he said, ‘We are afraid of you.’

Saheeh International[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

Abdel Haleem‘Do not be afraid,’ they said, ‘We bring you good news of a son who will have great knowledge.’

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘How can you give me such news when old age has come to me? What sort of news is this?’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘We have told you the truth, so do not despair.’

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘Who but the misguided despair of the mercy of their Lord?’

Saheeh International[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

Abdel Haleemand then asked, ‘Messengers, what is your errand?’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

Abdel HaleemThey replied, ‘We have been sent to a people who are guilty.’

Saheeh InternationalExcept the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

Abdel HaleemBut We shall save the household of Lot,

Saheeh InternationalExcept his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.

Abdel Haleemall except his wife: We have decreed that she will be one of those who stay behind.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

Abdel HaleemWhen the messengers came to the household of Lot,

Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

Abdel Haleemhe said, ‘You are strangers.’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘We have brought you what they said would never happen:

Saheeh InternationalAnd we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

Abdel Haleemwe have brought you the Truth. We speak truly,

Saheeh InternationalSo set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

Abdel Haleemso leave in the dead of the night with your household, and walk behind them. Let none of you look back. Go where you are commanded.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

Abdel HaleemWe made this decree known to him: the last remnants of those people would be wiped out in the morning.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the people of the city came rejoicing.

Abdel HaleemThe people of the town came along, revelling,

Saheeh International[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

Abdel Haleemand he told them, ‘These are my guests, do not disgrace me.

Saheeh InternationalAnd fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."

Abdel HaleemFear God, and do not shame me.’

Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

Abdel HaleemThey answered, ‘Have we not told you not to interfere [between us and] anyone else?’

Saheeh International[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."

Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My daughters are here, if you must.’

Saheeh InternationalBy your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

Abdel HaleemBy your life [Prophet], they wandered on in their wild intoxication

Saheeh InternationalSo the shriek seized them at sunrise.

Abdel Haleemand the blast overtook them at sunrise:

Saheeh InternationalAnd We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

Abdel HaleemWe turned their city upside down and rained on them a shower of clay stones.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that are signs for those who discern.

Abdel HaleemThere truly is a sign in this for those who can learn-

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.

Abdel Haleemit is still there on the highway-

Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that is a sign for the believers.

Abdel Haleemthere truly is a sign in this for those who believe.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

Abdel HaleemThe forest-dwellers, too, were wrongdoers

Saheeh InternationalSo We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

Abdel Haleemand We took retribution on them; both are still there on the highway, plain for all to see.

Saheeh InternationalAnd certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

Abdel HaleemThe people of al-Hijr also rejected Our messengers:

Saheeh InternationalAnd We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

Abdel HaleemWe gave them Our signs, but they turned their backs.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

Abdel HaleemThey carved out dwellings in the mountains, and lived in security-

Saheeh InternationalBut the shriek seized them at early morning,

Abdel Haleemthe blast overwhelmed them early in the morning.

Saheeh InternationalSo nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

Abdel HaleemWhat they had gained was of no use to them.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

Abdel HaleemWe did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them without a true purpose: the Hour will certainly come, so [Prophet] bear with them graciously.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

Abdel HaleemYour Lord is the All Knowing Creator.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’ān.

Abdel HaleemWe have given you the seven oft-recited versesand the whole glorious Quran.

Saheeh InternationalDo not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.

Abdel HaleemDo not look longingly at the good things We have given some to enjoy. Do not grieve over the [disbelievers], but lower your wings over the believers

Saheeh InternationalAnd say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -

Abdel Haleemand say, ‘I am here to give plain warning,’

Saheeh InternationalJust as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators

Abdel Haleemlike the [warning] We have sent down for those who divide themselves into bands

Saheeh InternationalWho have made the Qur’ān into portions.

Abdel Haleemand abuse the Quran––

Saheeh InternationalSo by your Lord, We will surely question them all

Abdel Haleemby your Lord, We will question them all

Saheeh InternationalAbout what they used to do.

Abdel Haleemabout their deeds.

Saheeh InternationalThen declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.

Abdel HaleemSo proclaim openly what you have been commanded [to say], and ignore the idolaters.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers

Abdel HaleemWe are enough for you against all those who ridicule your message,

Saheeh InternationalWho make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.

Abdel Haleemwho set up another god beside God- they will come to know.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.

Abdel HaleemWe are well aware that your heart is weighed down by what they say.

Saheeh InternationalSo exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].

Abdel HaleemCelebrate the glory of your Lord and be among those who bow down to Him:

Saheeh InternationalAnd worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].

Abdel Haleemworship your Lord until what is certain comes to you.
