Surah 16 · Makki · 128 ayat

An-Nahl

The Bee

Saheeh InternationalThe command of Allāh is coming, so be not impatient for it. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.

Abdel HaleemGod’s Judgement is coming, so do not ask to bring it on sooner. Glory be to Him! He is far above anything they join with Him!

Saheeh InternationalHe sends down the angels, with the inspiration [i.e., revelation] of His command, upon whom He wills of His servants, [telling them], "Warn that there is no deity except Me; so fear Me."

Abdel HaleemHe sends down angels with inspiration at His command, to whichever of His servants He chooses, to give [His] warning: ‘There is no god but Me, so beware of Me.’

Saheeh InternationalHe created the heavens and earth in truth. High is He above what they associate with Him.

Abdel HaleemHe created the heavens and earth for a true purpose, and He is far above whatever they join with Him!

Saheeh InternationalHe created man from a sperm-drop; then at once he is a clear adversary.

Abdel HaleemHe created man from a drop of fluid, and yet man openly challenges Him.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the grazing livestock He has created for you; in them is warmth and [numerous] benefits, and from them you eat.

Abdel HaleemAnd livestock––He created them too. You derive warmth and other benefits from them: you get food from them;

Saheeh InternationalAnd for you in them is [the enjoyment of] beauty when you bring them in [for the evening] and when you send them out [to pasture].

Abdel Haleemyou find beauty in them when you bring them home to rest and when you drive them out to pasture.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they carry your loads to a land you could not have reached except with difficulty to yourselves. Indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemThey carry your loads to lands you yourselves could not reach without great hardship––truly your Lord is kind and merciful––

Saheeh InternationalAnd [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.

Abdel Haleemhorses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and use for show, and other things you know nothing about.

Saheeh InternationalAnd upon Allāh is the direction of the [right] way, and among them [i.e., the various paths] are those deviating. And if He willed, He could have guided you all.

Abdel HaleemGod points out the right path, for some paths lead the wrong way: if He wished, He could guide you all.

Saheeh InternationalIt is He who sends down rain from the sky; from it is drink and from it is foliage in which you pasture [animals].

Abdel HaleemIt is He who sends down water for you from the sky, from which comes a drink for you, and the shrubs that you feed to your animals.

Saheeh InternationalHe causes to grow for you thereby the crops, olives, palm trees, grapevines, and of all the fruits. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.

Abdel HaleemWith it He grows for you grain, olives, palms, vines, and all kinds of other crops. There truly is a sign in this for those who reflect.

Saheeh InternationalAnd He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.

Abdel HaleemBy His command He has made the night and day, the sun, moon, and stars all of benefit to you. There truly are signs in this for those who use their reason.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [He has subjected] whatever He multiplied for you on the earth of varying colors. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who remember.

Abdel HaleemHe has made of benefit to you the many-coloured things He has multiplied on the earth. There truly are signs in this for those who take it to heart.

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.

Abdel HaleemIt is He who made the sea of benefit to you: you eat fresh fish from it and bring out jewellery to wear; you see the ships cutting through its waves so that you may go in search of His bounty and give thanks.

Saheeh InternationalAnd He has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it shift with you, and [made] rivers and roads, that you may be guided,

Abdel HaleemHe has made mountains stand firm on the earth, to prevent it shaking under you, and rivers and paths so that you may find your way,

Saheeh InternationalAnd landmarks. And by the stars they are [also] guided.

Abdel Haleemand landmarks and stars to guide people.

Saheeh InternationalThen is He who creates like one who does not create? So will you not be reminded?

Abdel HaleemCan He who creates be compared to one who cannot create? Why do you not take heed?

Saheeh InternationalAnd if you should count the favors of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemIf you tried to count God’s blessings, you could never take them all in: He is truly most forgiving and most merciful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh knows what you conceal and what you declare.

Abdel HaleemHe knows what you conceal and what you reveal.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those they invoke other than Allāh create nothing, and they [themselves] are created.

Abdel HaleemThose they invoke beside God create nothing; they are themselves created.

Saheeh InternationalThey are [in fact] dead, not alive, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.

Abdel HaleemThey are dead, not living. They do not know when they will be raised up.

Saheeh InternationalYour god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant.

Abdel HaleemYour God is the One God. As for those who deny the life to come, their hearts refuse to admit the truth and they are arrogant.

Saheeh InternationalAssuredly, Allāh knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.

Abdel HaleemThere is no doubt that God knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He does not love the arrogant.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" they say, "Legends of the former peoples,"

Abdel HaleemWhen they are asked, ‘What has your Lord sent down?’ they say, ‘Ancient fables.’

Saheeh InternationalThat they may bear their own burdens [i.e., sins] in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without [i.e., by lack of] knowledge. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.

Abdel HaleemOn the Day of Resurrection they will bear the full weight of their own burden, as well as some of the burden of those they misled with no true knowledge. How terrible their burden will be!

Saheeh InternationalThose before them had already plotted, but Allāh came at [i.e., uprooted] their building from the foundations, so the roof fell upon them from above them, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive.

Abdel HaleemThose who went before them also schemed, but God attacked the very foundations of what they built. The roof fell down on them: punishment came on them from unimagined directions.

Saheeh InternationalThen on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, "Where are My 'partners' for whom you used to oppose [the believers]?" Those who were given knowledge will say, "Indeed disgrace, this Day, and evil are upon the disbelievers" -

Abdel HaleemIn the end, on the Day of Resurrection, He will shame them, saying, ‘Where are these “partners” of Mine on whose account you opposed [Me]?’ Those given knowledge will say, ‘Shame and misery on the disbelievers today!’

Saheeh InternationalThe ones whom the angels take in death [while] wronging themselves, and [who] then offer submission, [saying], "We were not doing any evil." But, yes! Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of what you used to do.

Abdel HaleemThose whose lives the angels take while they are wronging themselves will show submission: ‘We were doing no evil.’ ‘Yes you were: God knows fully everything that you have done,

Saheeh InternationalSo enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and how wretched is the residence of the arrogant.

Abdel Haleemso enter the gates of Hell. There you will remain- the home of the arrogant is evil indeed.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd it will be said to those who feared Allāh, "What did your Lord send down?" They will say, "[That which is] good." For those who do good in this world is good; and the home of the Hereafter is better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous -

Abdel HaleemBut when the righteous are asked, ‘What has your Lord sent down?’ they will say, ‘All that is good.’ There is a reward in this present world for those who do good, but their home in the Hereafter is far better: the home of the righteous is excellent.

Saheeh InternationalGardens of perpetual residence, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow. They will have therein whatever they wish. Thus does Allāh reward the righteous -

Abdel HaleemThey will enter perpetual Gardens graced with flowing streams. There they will have everything they wish. This is the way God rewards the righteous,

Saheeh InternationalThe ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."

Abdel Haleemthose whose lives the angels take in a state of goodness. They will say to them, ‘Peace be upon you. Enter the Garden as a reward for what you have done.’

Saheeh InternationalDo they [i.e., the disbelievers] await except that the angels should come to them or there comes the command of your Lord? Thus did those do before them. And Allāh wronged them not, but they had been wronging themselves.

Abdel HaleemAre the disbelievers waiting for the angels to come to them, or your Lord’s Judgement? Those who went before them did the same. God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves.

Saheeh InternationalSo they were struck by the evil consequences of what they did and were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

Abdel HaleemSo the evil they had done hit them and they were surrounded by the very thing they had mocked.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who associate others with Allāh say, "If Allāh had willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything through other than Him." Thus did those do before them. So is there upon the messengers except [the duty of] clear notification?

Abdel HaleemThose who worshipped others alongside God say, ‘If God had willed, we would not have worshipped anything but Him, nor would our fathers. We would not have declared anything forbidden without His sanction.’ Those before them said the same. Are the messengers obliged to do anything other than deliver [their message] clearly?

Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid ṭāghūt." And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.

Abdel HaleemWe sent a messenger to every community, saying, ‘Worship God and shun false gods.’ Among them were some God guided; misguidance took hold of others. So travel through the earth and see what was the fate of those who denied the truth.

Saheeh International[Even] if you should strive for their guidance, [O Muḥammad], indeed, Allāh does not guide those He sends astray, and they will have no helpers.

Abdel HaleemThough you [Prophet] may be eager to guide them, God does not guide those who misguide [others], nor will they have anyone to help them.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they swear by Allāh their strongest oaths [that] Allāh will not resurrect one who dies. But yes - [it is] a true promise [binding] upon Him, but most of the people do not know.

Abdel HaleemThey have sworn by God with their strongest oaths that He will not raise the dead to life. But He will- it is His binding promise, though most people do not realize it-

Saheeh International[It is] so He will make clear to them [the truth of] that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars.

Abdel Haleemin order to make clear for them what they have differed about and so that the disbelievers may realize that what they said was false.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, "Be," and it is.

Abdel HaleemWhen We will something to happen, all that We say is, ‘Be,’ and it is.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allāh after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.

Abdel HaleemAs for those who emi-grated in God’s cause after being wronged, We shall give them a good home in this world, but the reward of the Hereafter will be far greater, if they only knew it.

Saheeh International[They are] those who endured patiently and upon their Lord relied.

Abdel HaleemThey are the ones who are steadfast and put their trust in their Lord.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], all the messengers We sent before you were simply men to whom We had given the Revelation: you [people] can ask those who have knowledge if you do not know.

Saheeh International[We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.

Abdel HaleemWe sent them with clear signs and scriptures. We have sent down the message to you too [Prophet], so that you can explain to people what was sent for them, so that they may reflect.

Saheeh InternationalThen, do those who have planned evil deeds feel secure that Allāh will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?

Abdel HaleemAre those who plan evil so sure that God will not make the earth swallow them up, that punishment will not come on them from some unimagined direction,

Saheeh InternationalOr that He would not seize them during their [usual] activity, and they could not cause failure [i.e., escape from Him]?

Abdel Haleemthat it will not catch them suddenly in the midst of their comings and goings- for they cannot frustrate God-

Saheeh InternationalOr that He would not seize them gradually [in a state of dread]? But indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.

Abdel Haleemor that it will not catch up with them gradually? Indeed your Lord is kind and merciful.

Saheeh InternationalHave they not considered what things Allāh has created? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allāh, while they [i.e., those creations] are humble.

Abdel HaleemDo the [disbelievers] not observe the things that God has created, casting their shadows right and left, submitting themselves to God obediently?

Saheeh InternationalAnd to Allāh prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.

Abdel HaleemIt is to God that everything in the heavens and earth submits, every beast that moves, even the angels- they are free from arrogance:

Saheeh InternationalThey fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.

Abdel Haleemthey fear their Lord above them, and they do as they are commanded.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He [i.e., Allāh] is but one God, so fear only Me."

Abdel HaleemGod said, ‘Do not take two gods’- for He is the One God––‘ I alone am the One that you should hold in awe.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allāh that you fear?

Abdel HaleemEverything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him: everlasting obedience is His right. Will you heed anyone other than God?

Saheeh InternationalAnd whatever you have of favor - it is from Allāh. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.

Abdel HaleemWhatever good things you possess come from God, and when hardship afflicts you, it is to Him alone you cry out for help,

Saheeh InternationalThen when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord

Abdel Haleemyet when He has relieved you of your hardship- lo and behold!- some of you attribute partners to your Lord.

Saheeh InternationalSo they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.

Abdel HaleemLet them show ingratitude for the favours We have shown them; ‘Enjoy your brief time- soon you will know.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they assign to what they do not know [i.e., false deities] a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allāh, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.

Abdel HaleemThey set aside part of the sustenance We give them, for [idols] about which they have no true knowledge. By God! You will be questioned about your false inventions.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they attribute to Allāh daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire [i.e., sons].

Abdel HaleemThey assign daughters to God––may He be exalted!––and the [sons] they desire to themselves.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.

Abdel HaleemWhen one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom.

Saheeh InternationalHe hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.

Abdel HaleemIn his shame he hides himself away from his people because of the bad news he has been given. Should he keep her and suffer contempt or bury her in the dust? How ill they judge!

Saheeh InternationalFor those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the description [i.e., an attribute] of evil; and for Allāh is the highest attribute. And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Abdel HaleemThose who do not believe in the Hereafter should have the contemptible image, and God should have the highest one: He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].

Abdel HaleemIf God took people to task for the evil they do, He would not leave one living creature on earth, but He reprieves them until an appointed time: when their time comes they cannot delay it for a moment nor can they bring it forward.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they attribute to Allāh that which they dislike [i.e., daughters], and their tongues assert the lie that they will have the best [from Him]. Assuredly, they will have the Fire, and they will be [therein] neglected.

Abdel HaleemThey attribute to God what they themselves dislike while their own tongues utter the lie that the best belongs to them. Without doubt it is the Fire that belongs to them: they will be given priority there!

Saheeh InternationalBy Allāh, We did certainly send [messengers] to nations before you, but Satan made their deeds attractive to them. And he is their [i.e., the disbelievers] ally today [as well], and they will have a painful punishment.

Abdel HaleemBy God, We have sent messengers before you [Muhammad] to other communities, but Satan made their foul deeds seem alluring to them. He is the patron of these present disbelievers too, and a painful punishment awaits them all.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have not revealed to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], except for you to make clear to them that wherein they have differed and as guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

Abdel HaleemWe have sent down the Scripture to you only to make clear to them what they differ about, and as guidance and mercy to those who believe.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.

Abdel HaleemIt is God who sends water down from the sky and with it revives the earth when it is dead. There truly is a sign in this for people who listen.

Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers.

Abdel HaleemIn livestock, too, you have a lesson- We give you a drink from the contents of their bellies, between waste matter and blood, pure milk, sweet to the drinker.

Saheeh InternationalAnd from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.

Abdel HaleemFrom the fruits of date palms and grapes you take sweet juice and wholesome provisions. There truly is a sign in this for people who use their reason.

Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses [i.e., hives], and among the trees and [in] that which they construct.

Abdel HaleemAnd your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘Build yourselves houses in the mountains and trees and what people construct.

Saheeh InternationalThen eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.

Abdel HaleemThen feed on all kinds of fruit and follow the ways made easy for you by your Lord.’ From their bellies comes a drink of different colours in which there is healing for people. There truly is a sign in this for those who think.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh created you; then He will take you in death. And among you is he who is reversed to the most decrepit [old] age so that he will not know, after [having had] knowledge, a thing. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Competent.

Abdel HaleemIt is God who has created you and in time will cause you to die. Some of you will be reduced, in old age, to a most abject state, so that, after having knowledge, they will know nothing at all: God is truly all knowing and all powerful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored [i.e., given more] would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess [i.e., slaves] so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allāh they reject?

Abdel HaleemGod has given some of you more provision than others. Those who have been given more are unwilling to pass their provision on to the slaves they possess so that they become their equals. How can they refuse to acknowledge God’s blessings?

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?

Abdel HaleemAnd it is God who has given you spouses from amongst yourselves and through them He has given you children and grandchildren and provided you with good things. How can they believe in falsehood and deny God’s blessings?

Saheeh InternationalAnd they worship besides Allāh that which does not possess for them [the power of] provision from the heavens and the earth at all, and [in fact], they are unable.

Abdel HaleemThose they worship beside God have no power to provide anything for them from the heavens or the earth: they can do nothing.

Saheeh InternationalSo do not assert similarities to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh knows and you do not know.

Abdel HaleemSo do not make up images about God: God knows and you do not.

Saheeh InternationalAllāh presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allāh! But most of them do not know.

Abdel HaleemGod presents this illustration: a slave controlled by his master, with no power over anything, and another man We have supplied with good provision, from which he gives alms privately and openly. Can they be considered equal? All praise belongs to God, but most of them do not recognize this.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh presents an example of two men, one of them dumb and unable to do a thing, while he is a burden to his guardian. Wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal to one who commands justice, while he is on a straight path?

Abdel HaleemGod presents another illustration: two men, one of them dumb, unable to do anything, a burden to his carer- whatever task he directs him to, he achieves nothing good- can he be considered equal to one who commands justice and is on the straight path?

Saheeh InternationalAnd to Allāh belongs the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And the command for the Hour is not but as a glance of the eye or even nearer. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

Abdel HaleemAll that is hidden from view in the heavens and earth belongs to God. The coming of the Hour of Judgement is like the blink of an eye, or even quicker: God has power over everything.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect] that perhaps you would be grateful.

Abdel HaleemIt is God who brought you out of your mothers’ wombs knowing nothing, and gave you hearing and sight and minds, so that you might be thankful.

Saheeh InternationalDo they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allāh. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

Abdel HaleemDo they not see the birds made to fly through the air in the sky? Nothing holds them up except God. There truly are signs in this for those who believe.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has made for you from your homes a place of rest and made for you from the hides of the animals tents which you find light on your day of travel and your day of encampment; and from their wool, fur and hair is furnishing and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.

Abdel HaleemIt is God who has given you a place of rest in your homes and from the skins of animals made you homes that you find light [to handle] when you travel and when you set up camp; furnishings and comfort for a while from their wool, fur, and hair.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows [i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments [i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him].

Abdel HaleemIt is God who has given you shade from what He has created, and places of shelter in the mountains; garments to protect you from the heat, and garments to protect you in your wars. In this way He perfects His blessings on you, so that you may devote yourselves to Him.

Saheeh InternationalBut if they turn away, [O Muḥammad] - then only upon you is [responsibility for] clear notification.

Abdel HaleemBut if they turn away [Prophet], your only duty is to deliver the message clearly.

Saheeh InternationalThey recognize the favor of Allāh; then they deny it. And most of them are disbelievers.

Abdel HaleemThey know God’s blessings, but refuse to recognize them: most of them are ungrateful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] the Day when We will resurrect from every nation a witness [i.e., their prophet]. Then it will not be permitted to the disbelievers [to apologize or make excuses], nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].

Abdel HaleemThe day will come when We raise up a witness from every community, when the disbelievers will not be allowed to make excuses or amends.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.

Abdel HaleemWhen the evildoers face punishment it will not be lightened for them nor will they be given any respite.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when those who associated others with Allāh see their "partners," they will say, "Our Lord, these are our partners [to You] whom we used to invoke [in worship] besides You." But they will throw at them the statement, "Indeed, you are liars."

Abdel HaleemWhen the idolaters see the partners they joined with God they will say, ‘Our Lord, these are the partners we used to invoke beside You,’ but the partners will retort, ‘You are liars,’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they will impart to Allāh that Day [their] submission, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

Abdel Haleemand on that Day they will offer total submission to God: their false deities will desert them.

Saheeh InternationalThose who disbelieved and averted [others] from the way of Allāh - We will increase them in punishment over [their] punishment for what corruption they were causing.

Abdel HaleemBecause of the corruption they spread, We shall add torment upon torment for those who disbelieved and barred others from the path of God.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] the Day when We will resurrect among every nation a witness over them from themselves [i.e., their prophet]. And We will bring you, [O Muḥammad], as a witness over these [i.e., your nation]. And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.

Abdel HaleemThe day will come when We raise up in each community a witness against them, and We shall bring you [Prophet] as a witness against these people, for We have sent the Scripture down to you explaining everything, and as guidance and mercy and good news to those who devote themselves to God.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

Abdel HaleemGod commands justice, doing good, and generosity towards relatives and He forbids what is shameful, blameworthy, and oppressive. He teaches you, so that you may take heed.

Saheeh InternationalAnd fulfill the covenant of Allāh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allāh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, Allāh knows what you do.

Abdel HaleemFulfil any pledge you make in God’s name and do not break oaths after you have sworn them, for you have made God your surety: God knows everything you do.

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong [by] taking your oaths as [means of] deceit between you because one community is more plentiful [in number or wealth] than another community. Allāh only tries you thereby. And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ.

Abdel HaleemDo not use your oaths to deceive each other- like a woman who unravels the thread she has firmly spun- just because one party may be more numerous than another. God tests you with this, and on the Day of the Resurrection He will make clear to you those things you differed about.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if Allāh had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.

Abdel HaleemIf God so willed, He would have made you all one people, but He leaves to stray whoever He will and guides whoever He will. You will be questioned about your deeds.

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not take your oaths as [means of] deceit between you, lest a foot slip after it was [once] firm, and you would taste evil [in this world] for what [people] you diverted from the way of Allāh, and you would have [in the Hereafter] a great punishment.

Abdel HaleemDo not use your oaths to deceive each other lest any foot should slip after being firmly placed and lest you should taste the penalty for having hindered others from the path of God, and suffer terrible torment.

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not exchange the covenant of Allāh for a small price. Indeed, what is with Allāh is best for you, if only you could know.

Abdel HaleemDo not sell for a small price any pledge made in God’s name: what God has [to give] is better for you, if you only knew.

Saheeh InternationalWhatever you have will end, but what Allāh has is lasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.

Abdel HaleemWhat you have runs out but what God has endures, and We shall certainly reward those who remain steadfast according to the best of their actions.

Saheeh InternationalWhoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

Abdel HaleemTo whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions.

Saheeh InternationalSo when you recite the Qur’ān, [first] seek refuge in Allāh from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], when you recite the Quran, seek God’s protection from the outcast, Satan.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.

Abdel HaleemHe has no power over those who believe and trust in their Lord;

Saheeh InternationalHis authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who through him associate others with Allāh.

Abdel Haleemhis power is only over those who ally themselves with him and those who, because of him, join partners with God.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allāh is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muḥammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know.

Abdel HaleemWhen We substitute one revelation for another- and God knows best what He reveals- they say, ‘You are just making it up,’ but most of them have no knowledge.

Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "The Pure Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims."

Abdel HaleemSay that the Holy Spirit has brought the Revelation with the Truth step by step from your Lord, to strengthen the believers and as guidance and good news to the devout.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)]." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this [recitation, i.e., Qur’ān] is [in] a clear Arabic language.

Abdel HaleemWe know very well that they say, ‘It is a man who teaches him,’ but the language of the person they allude to is foreign, while this revelation is in clear Arabic.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who do not believe in the verses of Allāh - Allāh will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment.

Abdel HaleemIf people do not believe in God’s revelation, God does not guide them, and a painful punishment awaits them.

Saheeh InternationalThey only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of Allāh, and it is those who are the liars.

Abdel HaleemFalsehood is fabricated only by those who do not believe in God’s revelation: they are the liars.

Saheeh InternationalWhoever disbelieves in [i.e., denies] Allāh after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allāh, and for them is a great punishment;

Abdel HaleemWith the exception of those who are forced to say they do not believe, although their hearts remain firm in faith, those who reject God after believing in Him and open their hearts to disbelief will have the wrath of God upon them and a grievous punishment awaiting them.

Saheeh InternationalThat is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

Abdel HaleemThis is because they love the life of this world more than the one to come, and God does not guide those who reject Him.

Saheeh InternationalThose are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allāh has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless.

Abdel HaleemThese are people whose hearts, hearing, and sight have been closed off by God: they are heedless,

Saheeh InternationalAssuredly, it is they, in the Hereafter, who will be the losers.

Abdel Haleemand there is no doubt that they will be the losers in the Hereafter.

Saheeh InternationalThen, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to say words of disbelief] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allāh] and were patient - indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful

Abdel HaleemBut your Lord will be most forgiving and most merciful to those who leave their homes after persecution, then strive and remain steadfast.

Saheeh InternationalOn the Day when every soul will come disputing [i.e., pleading] for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].

Abdel HaleemOn the Day when every soul will come pleading for itself, every soul will be paid in full for all its actions- they will not be wronged.

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh presents an example: a city [i.e., Makkah] which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allāh. So Allāh made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing.

Abdel HaleemGod presents the example of a town that was secure and at ease, with provisions coming to it abundantly from all places. Then it became ungrateful for God’s blessings, so God afflicted it with the garment of famine and fear, for what its people had done.

Saheeh InternationalAnd there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.

Abdel HaleemA messenger who was one of them came to them, but they called him a liar. So punishment overwhelmed them in the midst of their evildoing.

Saheeh InternationalThen eat of what Allāh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allāh, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.

Abdel HaleemSo eat of the good and lawful things God has provided for you and be thankful for His blessings, if it is Him that you worship.

Saheeh InternationalHe has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemHe has forbidden you only these things: carrion, blood, pig’s meat, and animals over which any name other than God’s has been invoked. But if anyone is forced by hunger, not desiring it nor exceeding their immediate need, God is forgiving and merciful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allāh. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allāh will not succeed.

Abdel HaleemDo not say falsely, ‘This is lawful and that is forbidden,’ inventing a lie about God: those who invent lies about God will not prosper-

Saheeh International[It is but] a brief enjoyment, and they will have a painful punishment.

Abdel Haleemthey may have a little enjoyment, but painful punishment awaits them.

Saheeh InternationalAnd to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], We forbade the Jews what We told you about. We did not wrong them; they wronged themselves.

Saheeh InternationalThen, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemBut towards those who do wrong out of ignorance, and afterwards repent and make amends, your Lord is most forgiving and merciful.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allāh, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allāh.

Abdel HaleemAbraham was truly an example: devoutly obedient to God and true in faith. He was not an idolater;

Saheeh International[He was] grateful for His favors. He [i.e., Allāh] chose him and guided him to a straight path.

Abdel Haleemhe was thankful for the blessings of God who chose him and guided him to a straight path.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.

Abdel HaleemWe gave him blessings in this world, and he is among the right-eous in the Hereafter.

Saheeh InternationalThen We revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allāh.

Abdel HaleemThen We revealed to you [Muhammad], ‘Follow the creed of Abraham, a man of pure faith who was not an idolater.’

Saheeh InternationalThe sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.

Abdel HaleemThe Sabbath was made obligatory only for those who differed about it. On the Day of Resurrection your Lord will judge between them as to their differences.

Saheeh InternationalInvite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], call [people] to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good teaching. Argue with them in the most courteous way, for your Lord knows best who has strayed from His way and who is rightly guided.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.

Abdel HaleemIf you [believers] have to respond to an attack, make your response proportionate, but it is best to stand fast.

Saheeh InternationalAnd be patient, [O Muḥammad], and your patience is not but through Allāh. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.

Abdel HaleemSo [Prophet] be steadfast: your steadfastness comes only from God. Do not grieve over them; do not be distressed by their scheming,

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.

Abdel Haleemfor God is with those who are mindful of Him and who do good.
