Ibrahim

Abraham

Saheeh InternationalAlif, Lām, Rā. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -

Abdel HaleemAlif Lam Ra This is a Scripture which We have sent down to you [Prophet] so that, with their Lord’s permission, you may bring people from the depths of darkness into light, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy One,

Saheeh InternationalAllāh, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe [i.e., destruction] to the disbelievers from a severe punishment -

Abdel HaleemGod, to whom everything in the heavens and earth belongs. How terrible will be the torment of those who ignore [Him],

Saheeh InternationalThe ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allāh, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. Those are in extreme error.

Abdel Haleemthose who prefer the life of this world over the life to come, who turn others from God’s way, trying to make it crooked: such people have gone far astray.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allāh sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Abdel HaleemWe have never sent a messenger who did not use his own people’s language to make things clear for them. But still God leaves whoever He will to stray, and guides whoever He will: He is the Almighty, the All Wise.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allāh." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Abdel HaleemWe sent Moses with Our signs: ‘Bring out your people from the depths of darkness into light. Remind them of the Days of God:there truly are signs in this for every steadfast, thankful person.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to his people, "Remember the favor of Allāh upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

Abdel HaleemAnd so Moses said to his people, ‘Remember God’s blessing on you when He saved you from Pharaoh’s people, who were inflicting terrible suffering on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing only your women––that was a severe test from your Lord!

Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"

Abdel HaleemRemember that He promised, “If you are thankful, I will give you more, but if you are thankless, My punishment is terrible indeed.” ’

Saheeh InternationalAnd Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy."

Abdel HaleemAnd Moses said, ‘Even if you, together with everybody else on earth, are thankless, God is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise.’

Saheeh InternationalHas there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them? No one knows them [i.e., their number] but Allāh. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

Abdel HaleemHave you not heard about those who went before you, the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and those who lived after them, known only to God? Their messengers came to them with clear proof, but they tried to silence them, saying, ‘We do not believe the message with which you were sent. We have disturbing doubts about what you are asking us to do.’

Saheeh InternationalTheir messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allāh, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays you [i.e., your death] for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority [i.e., evidence]."

Abdel HaleemTheir messengers answered, ‘Can there be any doubt about God, the Creator of the heavens and earth? He calls you to Him in order to forgive you your sins and let you enjoy your life until the appointed hour.’ But they said, ‘You are only men like us. You want to turn us away from what our forefathers used to worship. Bring us clear proof then, [if you can].’

Saheeh InternationalTheir messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allāh confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allāh. And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

Abdel HaleemTheir messengers answered, ‘True, we are only men like you, but God favours whichever of His servants He chooses. We cannot bring you any proof unless God permits it, so let the believers put all their trust in Him-

Saheeh InternationalAnd why should we not rely upon Allāh while He has guided us to our [good] ways. And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us. And upon Allāh let those who would rely [indeed] rely."

Abdel Haleemwhy should we not put our trust in God when it is He who has guided us to this way we follow? We shall certainly bear steadfastly whatever harm you do to us. Let anyone who trusts, trust in God.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers said to their messengers, ‘We shall expel you from our land unless you return to our religion.’ But their Lord inspired the messengers: ‘We shall destroy the evildoers,

Saheeh InternationalAnd We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat."

Abdel Haleemand leave you to dwell in the land after them. This reward is for those who are in awe of meeting Me, and of My warnings.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they requested decision [i.e., victory from Allāh], and disappointed, [therefore], was every obstinate tyrant.

Abdel HaleemThey asked God to decide, and every obstinate tyrant failed-

Saheeh InternationalBefore him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.

Abdel HaleemHell awaits each one; he will be given foul water to drink,

Saheeh InternationalHe will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.

Abdel Haleemwhich he will try to gulp but scarcely be able to swallow; death will encroach on him from every side, but he will not die; more intense suffering will lie ahead of him.

Saheeh InternationalThe example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.

Abdel HaleemThe deeds of those who reject their Lord are like ashes that the wind blows furiously on a stormy day: they have no power over anything they have gained. This is to stray far, far away.

Saheeh InternationalHave you not seen [i.e., considered] that Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do you not see that God created the heavens and the earth for a purpose? He could remove all of you and replace you with a new creation if He wished to:

Saheeh InternationalAnd that is not difficult for Allāh.

Abdel Haleemthat is not difficult for God.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they will come out [for judgement] before Allāh all together, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "Indeed, we were your followers, so can you avail us anything against the punishment of Allāh?" They will say, "If Allāh had guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us whether we show intolerance or are patient: there is for us no place of escape."

Abdel HaleemWhen they all appear before Him, the weak will say to the powerseekers, ‘We were your followers. Can you protect us from any of God’s punishment?’ They will reply, ‘If God had guided us, we would have guided you. It makes no difference now whether we rage or endure with patience: there is no escape.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allāh had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allāh] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."

Abdel HaleemWhen everything has been decided, Satan will say, ‘God gave you a true promise. I too made promises but they were false ones: I had no power over you except to call you, and you responded to my call, so do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I reject the way you associated me with God before.’ A bitter torment awaits such wrongdoers,

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord; and their greeting therein will be, "Peace!"

Abdel Haleembut those who believed and did good deeds will be brought into Gardens graced with flowing streams, there to remain with their Lord’s permission: their greeting there is ‘Peace’.

Saheeh InternationalHave you not considered how Allāh presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do you not see how God makes comparisons? A good word is like a good tree whose root is firm and whose branches are high in the sky,

Saheeh InternationalIt produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allāh presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded.

Abdel Haleemyielding constant fruit by its Lord’s leave- God makes such comparisons for people so that they may reflect-

Saheeh InternationalAnd the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.

Abdel Haleembut an evil word is like a rotten tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, with no power to endure.

Saheeh InternationalAllāh keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allāh sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allāh does what He wills.

Abdel HaleemGod will give firmness to those who believe in the firmly rooted word, both in this world and the Hereafter, but the evildoers He leaves to stray: God does whatever He will.

Saheeh InternationalHave you not considered those who exchanged the favor of Allāh for disbelief and settled their people [in] the home of ruin?

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do you not see those who, in exchange for God’s favour, offer only ingratitude and make their people end up in the home of ruin, Hell,

Saheeh International[It is] Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the settlement.

Abdel Haleemwhere they burn? What an evil place to stay!

Saheeh InternationalAnd they have attributed to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for indeed, your destination is the Fire."

Abdel HaleemThey set up [false deities] as God’s equals to lead people astray from His path. Say, ‘Take your pleasure now, for your destination is the Fire.’

Saheeh International[O Muḥammad], tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange [i.e., ransom], nor any friendships.

Abdel HaleemTell My servants who have believed to keep up the prayer and give, secretly and in public, out of what We have provided them, before a Day comes when there will be no trading or friendship.

Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.

Abdel HaleemIt is God who created the heavens and earth, who has sent down water from the sky and with it brought forth produce to nourish you; He has made ships useful to you, sailing the sea by His command, and the rivers too;

Saheeh InternationalAnd He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.

Abdel HaleemHe has made the sun and the moon useful to you, steady on their paths; He has made the night and day useful to you

Saheeh InternationalAnd He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor [i.e., blessings] of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

Abdel Haleemand given you some of everything you asked Him for. If you tried to count God’s favours you could never calculate them: man is truly unjust and ungrateful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [i.e., Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.

Abdel HaleemRemember when Abraham said, ‘Lord, make this town safe! Preserve me and my offspring from idolatry,

Saheeh InternationalMy Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemLord, the [idols] have led many people astray! Anyone who follows me is with me, but as for anyone who disobeys me- You are surely forgiving and merciful.

Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

Abdel HaleemOur Lord, I have established some of my offspring in an uncultivated valley, close to Your Sacred House, Lord, so that they may keep up the prayer. Make people’s hearts turn to them, and provide them with produce, so that they may be thankful.

Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allāh on the earth or in the heaven.

Abdel HaleemOur Lord, You know well what we conceal and what we reveal: nothing at all is hidden from God, on earth or in heaven.

Saheeh InternationalPraise to Allāh, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.

Abdel HaleemPraise be to God, who has granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age: my Lord hears all requests!

Saheeh InternationalMy Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.

Abdel HaleemLord, grant that I and my offspring may keep up the prayer. Our Lord, accept my request.

Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."

Abdel HaleemOur Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd never think that Allāh is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them [i.e., their account] for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].

Abdel HaleemDo not think [Prophet] that God is unaware of what the disbelievers do: He only gives them respite until a Day when their eyes will stare in terror.

Saheeh InternationalRacing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them, and their hearts are void.

Abdel HaleemThey will rush forward, craning their necks, unable to divert their eyes, a gaping void in their hearts.

Saheeh InternationalAnd, [O Muḥammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers." [But it will be said], "Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?

Abdel HaleemSo warn people of the Day when punishment will come to them, and when the disbelievers will say, ‘Our Lord, give us a little more time: we shall answer Your call and follow the messengers.’ Did you [disbelievers] not swear in the past that your power would have no end?

Saheeh InternationalAnd you lived among the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them. And We presented for you [many] examples."

Abdel HaleemYou lived in the same places as others who wronged themselves before, and you were clearly shown how We dealt with them––We gave you many examples.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they had planned their plan, but with Allāh is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.

Abdel HaleemThey made their plots, but, even if their plots had been able to move mountains, God had the answer.

Saheeh InternationalSo never think that Allāh will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.

Abdel HaleemSo do not think [Prophet] that God will break His promise to His messengers: He is mighty, and capable of retribution.

Saheeh International[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and they [i.e., all creatures] will come out before Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,

Abdel HaleemOne Day- when the earth is turned into another earth, the heavens into another heaven, and people all appear before God, the One, the Overpowering-

Saheeh InternationalAnd you will see the criminals that Day bound together in irons,

Abdel Haleemyou [Prophet] will see the guilty on that Day, bound together in fetters,

Saheeh InternationalTheir garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire

Abdel Haleemin garments of pitch, faces covered in fire.

Saheeh InternationalSo that Allāh will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.

Abdel Haleem[All will be judged] so that God may reward each soul as it deserves: God is swift in His reckoning.

Saheeh InternationalThis [Qur’ān] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.

Abdel HaleemThis is a message to all people, so that they may be warned by it, and know that He is the only God, and so that those who have minds may take heed.
