The Cloaked One
Saheeh InternationalO you who covers himself [with a garment],
Abdel HaleemYou, wrapped in your cloak,
Saheeh InternationalArise and warn.
Abdel Haleemarise and give warning!
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord glorify.
Abdel HaleemProclaim the greatness of your Lord;
Saheeh InternationalAnd your clothing purify.
Abdel Haleemcleanse yourself;
Saheeh InternationalAnd uncleanliness avoid.
Abdel Haleemkeep away from all filth;
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not confer favor to acquire more.
Abdel Haleemdo not be overwhelmed and weaken;
Saheeh InternationalBut for your Lord be patient.
Abdel Haleembe steadfast in your Lord’s cause.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the trumpet is blown,
Abdel HaleemWhen the Trumpet sounds,
Saheeh InternationalThat Day will be a difficult day
Abdel Haleemthat will be a Day of anguish for the disbelievers.
Saheeh InternationalFor the disbelievers - not easy.
Abdel HaleemThey will have no ease.
Saheeh InternationalLeave Me with the one I created alone
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], leave Me to deal with the one I created helpless,
Saheeh InternationalAnd to whom I granted extensive wealth
Abdel Haleemthen gave vast wealth,
Saheeh InternationalAnd children present [with him]
Abdel Haleemand sons by his side,
Saheeh InternationalAnd spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
Abdel Haleemmaking everything easy for him––
Saheeh InternationalThen he desires that I should add more.
Abdel Haleemyet he still hopes I will give him more.
Saheeh InternationalNo! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
Abdel HaleemNo! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation:
Saheeh InternationalI will cover him with arduous torment.
Abdel HaleemI will inflict a spiralling torment on him.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, he thought and deliberated.
Abdel HaleemHe planned and plotted––
Saheeh InternationalSo may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Abdel Haleemdevilishly he plotted!
Saheeh InternationalThen may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
Abdel Haleemferociously he plotted!––
Saheeh InternationalThen he considered [again];
Abdel Haleemand looked
Saheeh InternationalThen he frowned and scowled;
Abdel Haleemand frowned and scowled
Saheeh InternationalThen he turned back and was arrogant
Abdel Haleemand turned away and behaved arrogantly
Saheeh InternationalAnd said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
Abdel Haleemand said, ‘This is just old sorcery,
Saheeh InternationalThis is not but the word of a human being."
Abdel Haleemjust the talk of a mortal!’
Saheeh InternationalI will drive him into Saqar.
Abdel HaleemI will throw him into the scorching Fire.
Saheeh InternationalAnd what can make you know what is Saqar?
Abdel HaleemWhat will explain to you what the scorching Fire is?
Saheeh InternationalIt lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
Abdel HaleemIt spares nothing and leaves nothing;
Saheeh InternationalAltering [i.e., blackening] the skins.
Abdel Haleemit scorches the flesh of humans;
Saheeh InternationalOver it are nineteen [angels].
Abdel Haleemthere are nineteen in charge of it––
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.
Abdel Haleemnone other than angels appointed by Us to guard Hellfire- and We have made their number a test for the disbelievers. So those who have been given the Scripture will be certain and those who believe will have their faith increased: neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers will have any doubts, but the sick at heart and the disbelievers will say, ‘What could God mean by this description?’ God leaves whoever He will to stray and guides whoever He will- no one knows your Lord’s forces except Him- this [description] is a warning to mortals.
Saheeh InternationalNo! By the moon.
Abdel HaleemYes––by the moon!
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the night when it departs.
Abdel HaleemBy the departing night!
Saheeh InternationalAnd [by] the morning when it brightens,
Abdel HaleemBy the shining dawn!
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].
Abdel HaleemIt is one of the mightiest things,
Saheeh InternationalAs a warning to humanity -
Abdel Haleema warning to all mortals,
Saheeh InternationalTo whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.
Abdel Haleemto those of you who choose to go ahead and those who lag behind.
Saheeh InternationalEvery soul, for what it has earned, will be retained.
Abdel HaleemEvery soul is held in pledge for its deeds,
Saheeh InternationalExcept the companions of the right,.
Abdel Haleembut the Companions of the Right will stay
Saheeh International[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
Abdel Haleemin Gardens and ask
Saheeh InternationalAbout the criminals,
Abdel Haleemabout the guilty.
Saheeh International[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
Abdel Haleem‘What drove you to the Scorching Fire?’ [they will ask]
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
Abdel Haleemand they will answer, ‘We did not pray;
Saheeh InternationalNor did we used to feed the poor.
Abdel Haleemwe did not feed the poor;
Saheeh InternationalAnd we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
Abdel Haleemwe indulged with others [in mocking the believers];
Saheeh InternationalAnd we used to deny the Day of Recompense
Abdel Haleemwe denied the Day of Judgement
Saheeh InternationalUntil there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."
Abdel Haleemuntil the Certain End came upon us.’
Saheeh InternationalSo there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
Abdel HaleemNo intercessor’s plea will benefit them now.
Saheeh InternationalThen what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.
Abdel HaleemWhat is the matter with them? Why do they turn away from the warning,
Saheeh InternationalAs if they were alarmed donkeys.
Abdel Haleemlike frightened asses
Saheeh InternationalFleeing from a lion?
Abdel Haleemfleeing from a lion?
Saheeh InternationalRather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.
Abdel HaleemEach one of them demands that a scripture be sent down to him and unrolled before his very eyes-
Saheeh InternationalNo! But they do not fear the Hereafter.
Abdel HaleemNo! Truly they have no fear of the life to come-
Saheeh InternationalNo! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder.
Abdel Haleembut truly this is a reminder.
Saheeh InternationalThen whoever wills will remember it.
Abdel HaleemLet whoever wishes to take heed do so:
Saheeh InternationalAnd they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
Abdel Haleemthey will only take heed if God so wishes. He is the Lord who should be heeded, the Lord of forgiveness.
