Saheeh InternationalThamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].
Abdel HaleemThe people of Thamud and 'Ad denied that the crashing blowwould come:
Saheeh InternationalSo as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].
Abdel HaleemThamud was destroyed by a deafening blast;

Abdel HaleemAd was destroyed by a furious wind
Saheeh InternationalWhich He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
Abdel Haleemthat God let loose against them for seven consecutive nights, eight consecutive days, so that you could have seen its people lying dead like hollow palm-trunks.

Abdel HaleemCan you see any trace of them now?
Saheeh InternationalAnd there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin.
Abdel HaleemAnd there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities with sin.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].
Abdel Haleemthese people committed grave sins and disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with an ever-tightening grip.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship
Abdel HaleemBut when the Flood rose high, We saved you in the floating ship,
Saheeh InternationalThat We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.
Abdel Haleemmaking that event a reminder for you: attentive ears may take heed.
Saheeh InternationalThen when the Horn is blown with one blast
Abdel HaleemWhen the Trumpet is sounded a single time,
Saheeh InternationalAnd the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -
Abdel Haleemwhen the earth and its mountains are raised high and then crushed with a single blow,

Abdel Haleemon that Day the Great Event will come to pass.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
Abdel HaleemThe angels will be on all sides of it and, on that Day, eight of them will bear the throne of your Lord above them.
Saheeh InternationalThat Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.
Abdel HaleemOn that Day you will be brought to judgement and none of your secrets will remain hidden.
Saheeh InternationalSo as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
Abdel HaleemAnyone who is given his Record in his right hand will say, ‘Here is my Record, read it.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."
Abdel HaleemI knew I would meet my Reckoning,’
Saheeh InternationalSo he will be in a pleasant life -
Abdel Haleemand so he will have a pleasant life

Saheeh InternationalBut as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

Saheeh InternationalI wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.
Abdel HaleemHow I wish death had been the end of me.
Saheeh InternationalMy wealth has not availed me.
Abdel HaleemMy wealth has been no use to me,

Saheeh InternationalThen into Hellfire drive him.
Abdel Haleemlead him to burn in the blazing Fire,

Saheeh InternationalThen into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
Abdel Haleemand [bind him] in a chain seventy metres long:
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,
Abdel Haleemhe would not believe in Almighty God,

Saheeh InternationalAnd if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,
Abdel Haleemif [the Prophet] had attributed some fabrication to Us,
Saheeh InternationalWe would have seized him by the right hand;
Abdel HaleemWe would certainly have seized his right hand
Saheeh InternationalThen We would have cut from him the aorta.
Abdel Haleemand cut off his lifeblood,

Abdel HaleemThis [Quran] is a reminder for those who are aware of God.
