Saheeh InternationalḤā, Meem.
Abdel HaleemHa Mim
Saheeh InternationalBy the clear Book,
Abdel HaleemBy the Scripture that makes things clear,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.
Abdel HaleemWe have made it a Quran in Arabic so that you [people] may understand.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.
Abdel HaleemIt is truly exalted in the Source of Scripture kept with Us, and full of wisdom.
Saheeh InternationalThen should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?
Abdel HaleemShould We ignore you and turn this revelation away from you because you are insolent people?
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
Abdel HaleemWe have sent many a prophet to earlier people
Saheeh InternationalBut there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
Abdel Haleemand they mocked every one of them,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.
Abdel Haleemso We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"
Abdel HaleemIf you [Prophet] ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and earth?’ they are sure to say, ‘They were created by the Almighty, the All Knowing.’
Saheeh International[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
Abdel HaleemIt is He who smoothed out the earth for you and traced out routes on it for you to find your way,
Saheeh InternationalAnd who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -
Abdel Haleemwho sends water down from the sky in due measure––We resurrect dead land with it, and likewise you will be resurrected from the grave––
Saheeh InternationalAnd who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount
Abdel Haleemwho created every kind of thing, who gave you ships and animals to ride on
Saheeh InternationalThat you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.
Abdel Haleemso that you may remember your Lord’s grace when you are seated on them and say, ‘Glory be to Him who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."
Abdel HaleemTruly it is to our Lord that we are returning.’
Saheeh InternationalBut they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.
Abdel HaleemYet they assign some of His own servants to Him as offspring!Man is clearly ungrateful!
Saheeh InternationalOr has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?
Abdel HaleemHas He taken daughters for Himself and favoured you with sons?
Saheeh InternationalAnd when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
Abdel HaleemWhen one of them is given news of the birth of a daughter, such as he so readily ascribes to the Lord of Mercy, his face grows dark and he is filled with gloom-
Saheeh InternationalSo is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allāh]?
Abdel Haleem‘Someone who is brought up amongst trinkets, who cannot put together a clear argument?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
Abdel HaleemThey consider the angels- God’s servants- to be female. Did they witness their creation? Their claim will be put on record and they will be questioned about it.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but misjudging.
Abdel HaleemThey say, ‘If the Lord of Mercy had willed it, we would not have worshipped them,’ but they do not know that- they are only guessing-
Saheeh InternationalOr have We given them a book before it [i.e., the Qur’ān] to which they are adhering?
Abdel Haleemor have We perhaps given them a book before this one, to which they hold fast?
Saheeh InternationalRather, they say, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are in their footsteps [rightly] guided."
Abdel HaleemNo indeed! They say, ‘We saw our fathers following this tradition; we are guided by their footsteps.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."
Abdel HaleemWhen-ever We sent a messenger before you to warn a township, those corrupted by wealth said, in the same way, ‘We saw our fathers following this tradition; we are only following in their footsteps.’
Saheeh International[Each warner] said, "Even if I brought you better guidance than that [religion] upon which you found your fathers?" They said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
Abdel HaleemThe messenger said, ‘Even though I bring you a truer religion than what you saw your fathers following?’ and they replied, ‘But we do not believe the message you bring.’
Saheeh InternationalSo We took retribution from them; then see how was the end of the deniers.
Abdel HaleemWe punished them: think about how those who rejected the Truth met their end.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said to his father and his people, "Indeed, I am disassociated from that which you worship
Abdel HaleemAbraham said to his father and his people, ‘I renounce what you worship.
Saheeh InternationalExcept for He who created me; and indeed, He will guide me."
Abdel HaleemI worship only Him who created me, and it is He who will guide me,’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he made it a word remaining among his descendants that they might return [to it].
Abdel Haleemand he bequeathed these words to his descendants so that they might return [to God].
Saheeh InternationalHowever, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.
Abdel HaleemI have let these people and their fathers enjoy long lives, and now I have given them the Truth and a messenger to make things clear-
Saheeh InternationalBut when the truth came to them, they said, "This is magic, and indeed we are, concerning it, disbelievers."
Abdel Haleemyet when the Truth came to them, they said, ‘This is sorcery. We do not believe in it,’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they said, "Why was this Qur’ān not sent down upon a great man from [one of] the two cities?"
Abdel Haleemand they said, ‘Why was this Quran not sent down to a distinguished man, from either of the two cities?’
Saheeh InternationalDo they distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees [of rank] that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate.
Abdel HaleemAre they the ones who share out your Lord’s grace? We are the ones who give them their share of livelihood in this world and We have raised some of them above others in rank, so that some may take others into service: your Lord’s grace is better than anything they accumulate.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if it were not that the people would become one community [of disbelievers], We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful - for their houses - ceilings and stairways of silver upon which to mount.
Abdel HaleemIf it were not that all mankind might have become a single nation [of disbelievers], We could have given all those who disbelieve in the Lord of Mercy houses with roofs of silver, sweeping staircases to ascend,
Saheeh InternationalAnd for their houses - doors and couches [of silver] upon which to recline
Abdel Haleemmassive gates, couches to sit on,
Saheeh InternationalAnd gold ornament. But all that is not but the enjoyment of worldly life. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.
Abdel Haleemand golden ornaments. All of these are mere enjoyments of this life; your Lord reserves the next life for those who take heed of Him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
Abdel HaleemWe assign an evil one as a comrade for whoever turns away from the revelations of the Lord of Mercy:
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, they [i.e., the devils] avert them from the way [of guidance] while they think that they are [rightly] guided
Abdel Haleemevil ones bar people from the right path, even though they may think they are well guided.
Saheeh InternationalUntil, when he comes to Us [at Judgement], he says [to his companion], "How I wish there was between me and you the distance between the east and west; and what a wretched companion."
Abdel HaleemWhen such a person comes to Us, he will say [to his comrade], ‘If only you had been as far away from me as east is from west. What an evil comrade!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment.
Abdel Haleem[It will be said to them], ‘You have done wrong. Having partners in punishment will not console you today.’
Saheeh InternationalThen will you make the deaf hear, [O Muḥammad], or guide the blind or he who is in clear error?
Abdel HaleemCan you [Prophet] make the deaf hear? Or guide either the blind or those who are in gross error?
Saheeh InternationalAnd whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.
Abdel HaleemEither We shall take you away and punish them- indeed We will-
Saheeh InternationalOr whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.
Abdel Haleemor We shall let you witness the punishment We threatened them with; We have full power over them.
Saheeh InternationalSo adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.
Abdel HaleemHold fast to what has been revealed to you- you truly are on the right path-
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.
Abdel Haleemfor it is a reminder for you and your people: you will all be questioned.
Saheeh InternationalAnd ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped?
Abdel HaleemAsk the prophets We sent before you: ‘Did We ever appoint any gods to be worshipped besides the Lord of Mercy?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds."
Abdel HaleemWe sent Moses to Pharaoh and his courtiers and he said, ‘I am truly a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds,’
Saheeh InternationalBut when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
Abdel Haleembut when he presented Our signs to them, they laughed,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith].
Abdel Haleemeven though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We inflicted torment on them so that they might return to the right path.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance,’
Saheeh InternationalBut when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
Abdel Haleembut as soon as We relieved their torment they broke their word.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
Abdel HaleemPharaoh proclaimed to his people, ‘My people, is the Kingdom of Egypt not mine? And these rivers that flow at my feet, are they not mine? Do you not see?
Saheeh InternationalOr am I [not] better than this one [i.e., Moses] who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Abdel HaleemAm I not better than this contemptible wretch who can scarcely express himself?
Saheeh InternationalThen why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
Abdel HaleemWhy has he not been given any gold bracelets? Why have no angels come to accompany him?’
Saheeh InternationalSo he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allāh].
Abdel HaleemIn this way he moved his people to accept and they obeyed him- they were perverse people.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.
Abdel HaleemWhen they provoked Us, We punished and drowned them all:
Saheeh InternationalAnd We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples.
Abdel HaleemWe made them a lesson and an example for later people.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the son of Mary was presented as an example, immediately your people laughed aloud.
Abdel HaleemWhen the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people [Prophet] laugh and jeer,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they said, "Are our gods better, or is he?" They did not present it [i.e., the comparison] except for [mere] argument. But, [in fact], they are a people prone to dispute.
Abdel Haleemsaying, ‘Are our gods better or him?’- they cite him only to challenge you: they are a contentious people-
Saheeh InternationalHe [i.e., Jesus] was not but a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.
Abdel Haleembut he is only a servant We favoured and made an example for the Children of Israel:
Saheeh InternationalAnd if We willed, We could have made [instead] of you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth.
Abdel Haleemif it had been Our will, We could have made you angels, succeeding one another on earth.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, he [i.e., Jesus] will be [a sign for] knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
Abdel HaleemThis [Quran] gives knowledge of the Hour: do not doubt it. Follow Me for this is the right path;
