Abdel HaleemAlif Lam Mim
Saheeh InternationalDo the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
Abdel HaleemDo people think they will be left alone after saying ‘We believe’ without being put to the test?
Saheeh InternationalBut We have certainly tried those before them, and Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
Abdel HaleemWe tested those who went before them: God will certainly mark out which ones are truthful and which are lying.
Saheeh InternationalOr do those who do evil deeds think they can outrun [i.e., escape] Us? Evil is what they judge.
Abdel HaleemDo the evildoers think they can escape us? How ill they judge!
Saheeh InternationalWhoever should hope for the meeting with Allāh - indeed, the term [decreed by] Allāh is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Abdel HaleemBut as for those who strive for their meeting with God, God’s appointed time is bound to come; He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allāh is Free from need of the worlds.
Abdel HaleemThose who exert themselves do so for their own benefit––God does not need His creatures––
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely remove from them their misdeeds and will surely reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
Abdel HaleemWe shall certainly blot out the misdeeds of those who believe and do good deeds, and We shall reward them according to the best of their actions.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.
Abdel HaleemWe have commanded people to be good to their parents, but do not obey them if they strive to make you serve, beside Me, anything of which you have no knowledge: you will all return to Me, and I shall inform you of what you have done.
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise].
Abdel HaleemWe shall be sure to admit those who believe and do good deeds to the ranks of the righteous.
Saheeh InternationalAnd of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?
Abdel HaleemThere are some people who say, ‘We believe in God,’ but, when they suffer for His cause, they think that human persecution is as severe as God’s punishment––yet, if any help comes to you [Prophet] from your Lord, they will say, ‘We have always been with you’. Does God not know best what is in everyone’s hearts?
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites.
Abdel HaleemGod will be sure to mark out which ones are the believers, and which the hypocrites.
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Follow our way, and we will carry your sins." But they will not carry anything of their sins. Indeed, they are liars.
Abdel HaleemThose who disbelieve say to the believers, ‘Follow our path and we shall bear [the consequences for] your sins,’ yet they will not do so––they are liars.
Saheeh InternationalBut they will surely carry their [own] burdens and [other] burdens along with their burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent.
Abdel HaleemThey will bear their own burdens and others besides: they will be questioned about their false assertions on the Day of Resurrection.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemWe sent Noah out to his people. He lived among them for fifty years short of a thousand but when the Flood overwhelmed them they were still doing evil.
Saheeh InternationalBut We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds.
Abdel HaleemWe saved him and those with him on the Ark. We made this a sign for all people.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, "Worship Allāh and fear Him. That is best for you, if you should know.
Abdel HaleemWe also sent Abraham. He said to his people, ‘Serve God and be mindful of Him: that is better for you, if only you knew.
Saheeh InternationalYou only worship, besides Allāh, idols, and you produce a falsehood. Indeed, those you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allāh provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."
Abdel HaleemWhat you worship instead of God are mere idols; what you invent is nothing but falsehood. Those you serve instead of God have no power to give you provisions, so seek provisions from God, serve Him, and give Him thanks: you will all be returned to Him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you [people] deny [the message] - already nations before you have denied. And there is not upon the Messenger except [the duty of] clear notification.
Abdel HaleemIf you say this is a lie, [be warned that] other communities before you said the same. The messenger’s only duty is to give clear warning.’
Saheeh InternationalHave they not considered how Allāh begins creation and then repeats it? Indeed that, for Allāh, is easy.
Abdel HaleemDo they not see that God brings life into being and reproduces it? Truly this is easy for God.
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allāh will produce the final creation [i.e., development]. Indeed Allāh, over all things, is competent."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Travel throughout the earth and see how He brings life into being: and He will bring the next life into being. God has power over all things.
Saheeh InternationalHe punishes whom He wills and has mercy upon whom He wills, and to Him you will be returned.
Abdel HaleemHe punishes whoever He will and shows mercy to whoever He will. You will all be returned to Him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd you will not cause failure [to Allāh] upon the earth or in the heaven. And you have not other than Allāh any protector or any helper.
Abdel HaleemYou cannot escape Him on earth or in the heavens; you will have no one to protect or help you besides God.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd the ones who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and the meeting with Him - those have despaired of My mercy, and they will have a painful punishment.
Abdel HaleemThose who deny God’s Revelation and their meeting with Him have no hope of receiving My grace: they will have a grievous torment.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the answer of his [i.e., Abraham's] people was not but that they said, "Kill him or burn him," but Allāh saved him from the fire. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
Abdel HaleemThe only answer Abraham’s people gave was, ‘Kill him or burn him!’ but God saved him from the Fire: there truly are signs in this for people who believe.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [Abraham] said, "You have only taken, other than Allāh, idols as [a bond of] affection among you in worldly life. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another and curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will not have any helpers."
Abdel HaleemAbraham said to them, ‘You have chosen idols instead of God but your love for them will only last for the present life: on the Day of Resurrection, you will disown and reject one another. Hell will be your home and no one will help you.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, "Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
Abdel HaleemLot believed him, and said, ‘I will flee to my Lord: He is the Almighty, the All Wise.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We gave to him Isaac and Jacob and placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture. And We gave him his reward in this world, and indeed, he is in the Hereafter among the righteous.
Abdel HaleemWe gave Isaac and Jacob to Abraham, and placed prophethood and Scripture among his offspring. We gave him his rewards in this world, and in the life to come he will be among the righteous.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, you commit such immorality as no one has preceded you with from among the worlds.
Abdel HaleemAnd Lot: when He said to his people, ‘You practise outrageous acts that no people before you have ever committed.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, you approach men and obstruct the road and commit in your meetings [every] evil." And the answer of his people was not but that they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allāh, if you should be of the truthful."
Abdel HaleemHow can you lust after men, waylay travellers, and commit evil in your gatherings?’ the only answer his people gave was, ‘Bring God’s punishment down on us, if what you say is true.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, support me against the corrupting people."
Abdel HaleemSo he prayed, ‘My Lord, help me against these people who spread corruption.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, "Indeed, we will destroy the people of that [i.e., Lot's] city. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers."
Abdel HaleemWhen Our mes-sengers brought the good news [of the birth of a son] to Abraham, they told him, ‘We are about to destroy the people of that town. They are wrongdoers.’
Saheeh International[Abraham] said, "Indeed, within it is Lot." They said, "We are more knowing of who is within it. We will surely save him and his family, except his wife. She is to be of those who remain behind."
Abdel HaleemAbraham said, ‘But Lot lives there.’ They answered, ‘We know who lives there better than you do. We shall save him and his household, except for his wife: she will be one of those who stay behind.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when Our messengers [i.e., angels] came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt for them great discomfort. They said, "Fear not, nor grieve. Indeed, we will save you and your family, except your wife; she is to be of those who remain behind.
Abdel HaleemWhen Our messengers came to Lot, he was troubled and distressed on their account. They said, ‘Have no fear or grief: we shall certainly save you and your household, except for your wife- she will be one of those who stay behind-
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, we will bring down on the people of this city punishment from the sky because they have been defiantly disobedient."
Abdel Haleemand we shall send a punishment from heaven down on the people of this town because they violate [God’s order].’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly left of it a sign as clear evidence for a people who use reason.
Abdel HaleemWe left some [of the town] there as a clear sign for those who use their reason.
Saheeh InternationalAnd to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh and expect the Last Day and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
Abdel HaleemTo the people of Midian We sent their brother Shuayb. He said, ‘My people, serve God and think ahead to the Last Day. Do not commit evil and spread corruption in the land.’
Saheeh InternationalBut they denied him, so the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
Abdel HaleemThey rejected him and so the earthquake overtook them. When morning came, they were lying dead in their homes.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd, and it has become clear to you from their [ruined] dwellings. And Satan had made pleasing to them their deeds and averted them from the path, and they were endowed with perception.
Abdel Haleem[Remember] the tribes of 'Ad and Thamud: their history is made clear to you by [what is left of] their dwelling places. Satan made their foul deeds seem alluring to them and barred them from the right way, though they were capable of seeing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [We destroyed] Qārūn and Pharaoh and Hāmān. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].
Abdel Haleem[Remember] Qarun and Pharaoh and Haman: Moses brought them clear signs, but they behaved arrogantly on earth. They could not escape Us
Saheeh InternationalSo each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allāh would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.
Abdel Haleemand We punished each one of them for their sins: some We struck with a violent storm; some were overcome by a sudden blast; some We made the earth swallow; and some We drowned. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.
Saheeh InternationalThe example of those who take allies other than Allāh is like that of the spider who takes [i.e., constructs] a home. And indeed, the weakest of homes is the home of the spider, if they only knew.
Abdel HaleemThose who take protectors other than God can be compared to spiders building themselves houses- the spider’s is the frailest of all houses- if only they could understand.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon other than Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Abdel HaleemGod knows what things they call upon beside Him: He is the Mighty, the Wise.
Saheeh InternationalAnd these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.
Abdel HaleemSuch are the comparisons We draw for people, though only the wise can grasp them.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
Abdel HaleemGod has created the heavens and earth for a true purpose. There truly is a sign in this for those who believe.
Saheeh InternationalRecite, [O Muḥammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], recite what has been revealed to you of the Scripture; keep up the prayer: prayer restrains outrageous and unacceptable behaviour. Remembering God is greater: God knows everything you are doing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
Abdel Haleem[Believers], argue only in the best way with the People of the Book, except with those of them who act unjustly. Say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us and in what was revealed to you; our God and your God are one [and the same]; we are devoted to Him.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus We have sent down to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān]. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.
Abdel HaleemThis is the way We sent the Scripture to you [Muhammad]. Those to whom We had already given Scripture believe in [the Quran] and so do some of these people. No one refuses to acknowledge Our revelations but the defiant.
Saheeh InternationalAnd you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Then [i.e., otherwise] the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt.
Abdel HaleemYou never recited any Scripture before We revealed this one to you; you never wrote one down with your hand. If you had done so, those who follow falsehood might have had cause to doubt.
Saheeh InternationalRather, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemBut no, [this Quran] is a revelation that is clear to the hearts of those endowed with knowledge. No one refuses to acknowledge Our revelations but the evildoers.
Saheeh InternationalBut they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."
Abdel HaleemThey say, ‘Why have no miracles been sent to him by his Lord?’ Say, ‘Miracles lie in God’s hands; I am simply here to warn you plainly.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe.
Abdel HaleemDo they not think it is enough that We have sent down to you the Scripture that is recited to them? There is a mercy in this and a lesson for believing people.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Sufficient is Allāh between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allāh - it is those who are the losers."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘God is sufficient witness between me and you: He knows what is in the heavens and earth. Those who believe in false deities and deny God will be the losers.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not.
Abdel HaleemThey challenge you to hasten the punishment: they would already have received a punishment if God had not set a time for it, and indeed it will come to them suddenly and catch them unawares.
Saheeh InternationalThey urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers
Abdel HaleemThey challenge you to hasten the punishment: Hell will encompass all those who deny the truth,
Saheeh InternationalOn the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do."
Abdel Haleemon the Day when punishment overwhelms them from above and from below their very feet, and they will be told, ‘Now taste the punishment for what you used to do.’
Saheeh InternationalO My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me.
Abdel HaleemMy believing servants! My earth is vast, so worship Me and Me alone.
Saheeh InternationalEvery soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned.
Abdel HaleemEvery soul will taste death, then it is to Us that you will be returned.
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers
Abdel HaleemWe shall lodge those who believed and did good deeds in lofty dwellings, in the Garden graced with flowing streams, there to remain. How excellent is the reward of those who labour,
Saheeh InternationalWho have been patient and upon their Lord rely.
Abdel Haleemthose who are steadfast, those who put their trust in their Lord!
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allāh provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Abdel HaleemHow many are the creatures who do not store their sustenance! God sustains them and you: He alone is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
Saheeh InternationalIf you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Then how are they deluded?
Abdel HaleemIf you ask the disbelievers who created the heavens and earth and who harnessed the sun and moon, they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Then why do they turn away from Him?
Saheeh InternationalAllāh extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.
Abdel HaleemIt is God who gives abundantly to whichever of His servants He will, and sparingly to whichever He will: He has full knowledge of everything.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Praise to Allāh"; but most of them do not reason.
Abdel HaleemIf you ask them, ‘Who sends water down from the sky and gives life with it to the earth after it has died?’ they are sure to say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Praise belongs to God!’ Truly, most of them do not use their reason.
Saheeh InternationalAnd this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
Abdel HaleemThe life of this world is merely an amusement and a diversion; the true life is in the Hereafter, if only they knew.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they board a ship, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith and hope]. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him
Abdel HaleemWhenever they go on board a ship they call on God, and dedicate their faith to Him alone, but once He has delivered them safely back to land, see how they ascribe partners to Him!
Saheeh InternationalSo that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know.
Abdel HaleemLet them show their ingratitude for what We have given them; let them take their enjoyment- soon they will know.
Saheeh InternationalHave they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?
Abdel HaleemCan they not see that We have made [them] a secure sanctuary though all around them people are snatched away? Then how can they believe in what is false and deny God’s blessing?
Saheeh InternationalAnd who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers?
Abdel HaleemWho could be more wicked than the person who invents lies about God, or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is Hell not the home for the disbelievers?
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good.
Abdel HaleemBut We shall be sure to guide to Our ways those who strive hard for Our cause: God is with those who do good.
