Saheeh InternationalThese are verses of the clear Book.
Abdel HaleemThese are the verses of the Scripture that makes things clear:
Saheeh InternationalWe recite to you from the news of Moses and Pharaoh in truth for a people who believe.
Abdel HaleemWe recount to you [Prophet] part of the story of Moses and Pharaoh, setting out the truth for people who believe.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their [newborn] sons and keeping their females alive. Indeed, he was of the corrupters.
Abdel HaleemPharaoh made himself high and mighty in the land and divided the people into different groups: one group he oppressed, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women––he was one of those who spread corruption––
Saheeh InternationalAnd We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors
Abdel Haleembut We wished to favour those who were oppressed in that land, to make them leaders, the ones to survive,
Saheeh InternationalAnd establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Hāmān and their soldiers through them that which they had feared.
Abdel Haleemto establish them in the land, and through them show Pharaoh, Haman, and their armies the very thing they feared.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."
Abdel HaleemWe inspired Moses’ mother, saying, ‘Suckle him, and then, when you fear for his safety, put him in the river: do not be afraid, and do not grieve, for We shall return him to you and make him a messenger.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd the family of Pharaoh picked him up [out of the river] so that he would become to them an enemy and a [cause of] grief. Indeed, Pharaoh and Hāmān and their soldiers were deliberate sinners.
Abdel HaleemPharaoh’s household picked him up––later to become an enemy and a source of grief for them: Pharaoh, Haman, and their armies were wrongdoers––
Saheeh InternationalAnd the wife of Pharaoh said, "[He will be] a comfort of the eye [i.e., pleasure] for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not.
Abdel Haleemand Pharaoh’s wife said, ‘Here is a joy to behold for me and for you! Do not kill him: he may be of use to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ They did not realize what they were doing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the heart of Moses' mother became empty [of all else]. She was about to disclose [the matter concerning] him had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.
Abdel HaleemThe next day, Moses’ mother felt a void in her heart––if We had not strengthened it to make her one of those who believe, she would have revealed everything about him––
Saheeh InternationalAnd she said to his sister, "Follow him"; so she watched him from a distance while they perceived not.
Abdel Haleemand she said to his sister, ‘Follow him.’ So she watched him from a distance, without them knowing.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had prevented from him [all] wet nurses before, so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household that will be responsible for him for you while they are to him [for his upbringing] sincere?"
Abdel HaleemWe had ordained that he would refuse to feed from wet nurses. His sister approached them and said, ‘Shall I tell you about a household which could bring him up for you and take good care of him?’
Saheeh InternationalSo We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allāh is true. But most of them [i.e., the people] do not know.
Abdel HaleemWe restored him to his mother in this way, so that she might be comforted, not grieve, and know that God’s promise is true, though most of them do not know.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he attained his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.
Abdel HaleemWhen Moses reached full maturity and manhood, We gave him wisdom and knowledge: this is how We reward those who do good.
Saheeh InternationalAnd he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy."
Abdel HaleemHe entered the city, unnoticed by its people, and found two men fighting: one from his own people, the other an enemy. The one from his own people cried out to him for help against the enemy. Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said, ‘This must be Satan’s work: clearly he is a misleading enemy.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘Lord, I have wronged myself. Forgive me,’ so He forgave him; He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My Lord, because of the blessings You have bestowed upon me, I shall never support those who do evil.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he became inside the city fearful and anticipating [exposure], when suddenly the one who sought his help the previous day cried out to him [once again]. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are an evident, [persistent] deviator."
Abdel HaleemNext morning, he was walking in the city, fearful and vigilant, when suddenly the man he had helped the day before cried out to him for help. Moses said, ‘You are clearly a troublemaker.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
Abdel HaleemAs he was about to attack the man who was an enemy to both of them, the man said, ‘Moses, are you going to kill me as you killed that person yesterday? You clearly want to be a tyrant in the land; you do not intend to put things right.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."
Abdel HaleemThen a man came running from the furthest part of the city and said, ‘Moses, the authorities are talking about killing you, so leave- this is my sincere advice.’
Saheeh InternationalSo he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
Abdel HaleemSo Moses left the city, fearful and wary, and prayed, ‘My Lord, save me from people who do wrong.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way."
Abdel HaleemAs he made his way towards Midian, he was saying, ‘May my Lord guide me to the right way.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he came to the water [i.e., well] of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women holding back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
Abdel HaleemWhen he arrived at Midian’s waters, he found a group of men watering [their flocks], and beside them two women keeping their flocks back, so he said, ‘What is the matter with you two?’ They said, ‘We cannot water [our flocks] until the shepherds take their sheep away: our father is a very old man.’
Saheeh InternationalSo he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
Abdel HaleemHe watered their flocks for them, withdrew into the shade, and prayed, ‘My Lord, I am in dire need of whatever good thing You may send me,’
Saheeh InternationalThen one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us." So when he came to him and related to him the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."
Abdel Haleemand then one of the two women approached him, walking shyly, and said, ‘My father is asking for you: he wants to reward you for watering our flocks for us.’ When Moses came to him and told him his story, the old man said, ‘Do not be afraid, you are safe now from people who do wrong.’
Saheeh InternationalOne of the women said, "O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."
Abdel HaleemOne of the women said, ‘Father, hire him: a strong, trustworthy man is the best to hire.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allāh wills, from among the righteous."
Abdel HaleemThe father said, ‘I would like to marry you to one of these daughters of mine, on condition that you serve me for eight years: if you complete ten, it will be of your own free will. I do not intend to make things difficult for you: God willing, you will find I am a fair man.’
Saheeh International[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allāh, over what we say, is Witness."
Abdel HaleemMoses said, ‘Let that be the agreement between us- whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no injustice to me- God is witness to what we say.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves."
Abdel HaleemOnce Moses had fulfilled the term and was travelling with his family, he caught sight of a fire on the side of the mountain and said to his family, ‘Wait! I have seen a fire. I will bring you news from there, or a burning stick for you to warm yourselves.’
Saheeh InternationalBut when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot - from the tree, "O Moses, indeed I am Allāh, Lord of the worlds."
Abdel HaleemBut when he reached it, a voice called out to him from the right-hand side of the valley, from a tree on the blessed ground: ‘Moses, I am God, the Lord of the Worlds.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [he was told], "Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing as if it was a snake, he turned in flight and did not return. [Allāh said], "O Moses, approach and fear not. Indeed, you are of the secure.
Abdel HaleemThrow down your staff.’ When he saw his staff moving like a snake, he fled in fear and would not return. Again [he was called]: ‘Moses! Draw near! Do not be afraid, for you are one of those who are safe.
Saheeh InternationalInsert your hand into the opening of your garment; it will come out white, without disease. And draw in your arm close to you [as prevention] from fear, for those are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his establishment. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient."
Abdel HaleemPut your hand inside your shirt and it will come out white but unharmed- hold your arm close to your side, free from all fear. These shall be two signs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs; they are truly wicked people.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, indeed I killed from among them someone, and I fear they will kill me.
Abdel HaleemMoses said, ‘My Lord, I killed one of their men, and I fear that they may kill me.
Saheeh InternationalAnd my brother Aaron is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me. Indeed, I fear that they will deny me."
Abdel HaleemMy brother Aaron is more eloquent than I: send him with me to help me and confirm my words- I fear they may call me a liar.’
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both supremacy so they will not reach you. [It will be] through Our signs; you and those who follow you will be the predominant."
Abdel HaleemGod said, ‘We shall strengthen you through your brother; We shall give you both power so that they cannot touch you. With Our signs you, and those who follow you, will triumph.’
Saheeh InternationalBut when Moses came to them with Our signs as clear evidences, they said, "This is not except invented magic, and we have not heard of this [religion] among our forefathers."
Abdel HaleemBut when Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said, ‘These are mere conjuring tricks; we never heard this from our forefathers.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd Moses said, "My Lord is more knowing [than we or you] of who has come with guidance from Him and to whom will be succession in the home. Indeed, wrongdoers do not succeed."
Abdel HaleemMoses said, ‘My Lord knows best who comes with guidance from Him and who will have the final Home: wrongdoers will never succeed.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh said, "O eminent ones, I have not known you to have a god other than me. Then ignite for me, O Hāmān, [a fire] upon the clay and make for me a tower that I may look at the God of Moses. And indeed, I do think he is among the liars."
Abdel HaleemPharaoh said, ‘Counsellors, you have no other god that I know of except me. Haman, light me a fire to bake clay bricks, then build me a tall building so that I may climb up to Moses’ God: I am convinced that he is lying.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he was arrogant, he and his soldiers, in the land, without right, and they thought that they would not be returned to Us.
Abdel HaleemPharaoh and his armies behaved arrogantly in the land with no right- they thought they would not be brought back to Us-
Saheeh InternationalSo We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea. So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.
Abdel Haleemso We seized him and his armies and threw them into the sea. See what became of the wrongdoers!
Saheeh InternationalAnd We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
Abdel HaleemWe made them leaders calling [others] only to the Fire: on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We caused to overtake them in this world a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be of the despised.
Abdel HaleemWe made Our rejection pursue them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded.
Abdel HaleemAfter We had destroyed the earlier generations, We gave Moses the Scripture to provide insight, guidance, and mercy for people, so that they might take heed.
Saheeh InternationalAnd you, [O Muḥammad], were not on the western side [of the mount] when We revealed to Moses the command, and you were not among the witnesses [to that].
Abdel HaleemYou [Muhammad] were not present on the western side of the mountain when We gave Our command to Moses: you were not there-
Saheeh InternationalBut We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration. And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message].
Abdel HaleemWe have brought into being many generations who lived long lives- you did not live among the people of Midian or recite Our Revelation to them- We have always sent messengers to people-
Saheeh InternationalAnd you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner had come before you that they might be reminded.
Abdel Haleemnor were you present on the side of Mount Sinai when We called out to Moses. But you too have been sent as an act of grace from your Lord, to give warning to a people to whom no warner has come before, so that they may take heed,
Saheeh InternationalAnd if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, "Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?"...
Abdel Haleemand may not say, if a disaster should befall them as a result of what they have done with their own hands, ‘Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we might have followed Your message and become believers.’
Saheeh InternationalBut when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given like that which was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve in that which was given to Moses before? They said, "[They are but] two works of magic supporting each other, and indeed we are, in both, disbelievers."
Abdel HaleemEven now that Our truth has come to them, they say, ‘Why has he not been given signs like those given to Moses?’ Did they not also deny the truth that was given to Moses before? They say, ‘Two kinds of sor-cery, helping each other,’ and, ‘We refuse to accept either of them.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Then bring a scripture from Allāh which is more guiding than either of them that I may follow it, if you should be truthful."
Abdel HaleemSay [Muhammad], ‘Then produce a book from God that gives better guidance than these two and I will follow it, if you are telling the truth.’
Saheeh InternationalBut if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allāh? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Abdel HaleemIf they do not respond to you, you will know that they follow only their own desires. Who is further astray than the one who follows his own desires with no guidance from God? Truly God does not guide those who do wrong.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have [repeatedly] conveyed to them the word [i.e., the Qur’ān] that they might be reminded.
Abdel HaleemWe have caused Our Word to come to them so that they may be mindful.
Saheeh InternationalThose to whom We gave the Scripture before it - they are believers in it.
Abdel HaleemThose to whom We gave the Scripture before believe in it,
Saheeh InternationalAnd when it is recited to them, they say, "We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh]."
Abdel Haleemand, when it is recited to them, say, ‘We believe in it, it is the truth from our Lord. Before it came we had already devoted ourselves to Him.’
Saheeh InternationalThose will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
Abdel HaleemThey will be given their rewards twice over because they are steadfast, repel evil with good, give to others out of what We have provided for them,
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant."
Abdel Haleemand turn away whenever they hear frivolous talk, saying, ‘We have our deeds and you have yours. Peace be with you! We do not seek the company of ignorant people.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
Abdel HaleemYou [Prophet] cannot guide everyone you love to the truth; it is God who guides whoever He will: He knows best those who will follow guidance.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they [i.e., the Quraysh] say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land." Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
Abdel HaleemThey say, ‘If we were to follow guidance with you [Prophet], we would be swept from our land.’ Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary where every kind of produce is brought, as a provision from Us? But most of them do not comprehend.
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly. And it is We who were the inheritors.
Abdel HaleemWe have destroyed many a community that once revelled in its wanton wealth and easy living: since then their dwelling places have barely been inhabited- We are the only heir.
Saheeh InternationalAnd never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother [i.e., principal city] a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemYour Lord would never destroy towns without first raising a messenger in their midst to recite Our messages to them, nor would We destroy towns unless their inhabitants were evildoers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allāh is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?
Abdel HaleemWhatever things you have been given for the life of this world are merely [temporary] gratification and vanity: that which is with God is better and more lasting- will you not use your reason?
Saheeh InternationalThen is he whom We have promised a good promise which he will meet [i.e., obtain] like he for whom We provided enjoyment of worldly life [but] then he is, on the Day of Resurrection, among those presented [for punishment in Hell]?
Abdel HaleemCan the person who will see the fulfilment of the good promise We gave him be compared to someone We have given some enjoyments for this worldly life but who, on the Day of Resurrection, will be summoned?
Saheeh InternationalAnd [warn of] the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"
Abdel HaleemThe Day will come when God will call them, saying, ‘Where now are those you allege are My partners?’
Saheeh InternationalThose upon whom the word will have come into effect will say, "Our Lord, these are the ones we led to error. We led them to error just as we were in error. We declare our disassociation [from them] to You. They did not used to worship [i.e., obey] us."
Abdel Haleemand those [ringleaders] against whom the verdict will be passed will say, ‘Our Lord, these are the ones we caused to deviate. We caused them to deviate as we ourselves deviated, but now we disown them before You: they did not really serve us.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd it will be said, "Invoke your 'partners,'" and they will invoke them; but they will not respond to them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had followed guidance!
Abdel HaleemIt will then be said to them, ‘Now call those you worshipped as partners,’ and they will call them but receive no answer. They will see the suffering and wish they had followed guidance.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] the Day He will call them and say, "What did you answer the messengers?"
Abdel HaleemOn that Day He will call them, saying, ‘How did you respond to My messengers?’
Saheeh InternationalBut the information will be unapparent to them that Day, so they will not [be able to] ask one another.
Abdel HaleemAll arguments will seem obscure to them on that Day; they will not be able to consult one another.
Saheeh InternationalBut as for one who had repented, believed, and done righteousness, it is expected [i.e., promised by Allāh] that he will be among the successful.
Abdel HaleemYet anyone who has repented, believed, and done good deeds can hope to find himself among the successful.
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allāh and high above what they associate with Him.
Abdel HaleemYour Lord creates what He pleases and chooses those He will- they have no choice- so glory be to God, and may He be exalted above the partners they ascribe to Him!
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they declare.
Abdel HaleemYour Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.
Saheeh InternationalAnd He is Allāh; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the [final] decision, and to Him you will be returned.
Abdel HaleemHe is God; there is no god but Him; all praise belongs to Him in this world and the next; His is the Judgement; and to Him you shall be returned.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Have you considered: if Allāh should make for you the night continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you light? Then will you not hear?"
Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘Just think, if God were to cast perpetual night over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than He could bring you light? Do you not listen?’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Have you considered: if Allāh should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?"
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Just think, if God were to cast perpetual day over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than He could give you night in which to rest? Do you not see?
Saheeh InternationalAnd out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty and [that] perhaps you will be grateful.
Abdel HaleemIn His mercy He has given you night and day, so that you may rest and seek His bounty and be grateful.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd [warn of] the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"
Abdel HaleemThe Day will come when He will call out to them, saying, ‘Where are the partners you claimed for Me?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We will extract from every nation a witness and say, "Produce your proof," and they will know that the truth belongs to Allāh, and lost from them is that which they used to invent.
Abdel HaleemWe shall call a witness from every community, and say, ‘Produce your evidence,’ and then they will know that truth belongs to God alone; the gods they invented will forsake them.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Qārūn was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, "Do not exult. Indeed, Allāh does not like the exultant.
Abdel HaleemQarun was one of Moses’ people, but he oppressed them. We had given him such treasures that even their keys would have weighed down a whole company of strong men. His people said to him, ‘Do not gloat, for God does not like people who gloat.
Saheeh InternationalBut seek, through that which Allāh has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allāh has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allāh does not like corrupters."
Abdel HaleemSeek the life to come by means of what God has granted you, but do not neglect your rightful share in this world. Do good to others as God has done good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for God does not love those who do this,’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allāh had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked.
Abdel Haleembut he answered, ‘This wealth was given to me on account of the knowledge I possess.’ Did he not know that God had destroyed many generations before him, who had greater power than him and built up greater wealth? The guilty will not be questioned about their sins.
Saheeh InternationalSo he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, "Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qārūn. Indeed, he is one of great fortune."
Abdel HaleemHe went out among his people in all his pomp, and those whose aim was the life of this world said, ‘If only we had been given something like what Qarun has been given: he really is a very fortunate man,’
Saheeh InternationalBut those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allāh is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient."
Abdel Haleembut those who were given knowledge said, ‘Alas for you! God’s reward is better for those who believe and do good deeds: only those who are steadfast will attain this.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allāh, nor was he of those who [could] defend themselves.
Abdel HaleemWe caused the earth to swallow him and his home: he had no one to help him against God, nor could he defend himself.
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who had wished for his position the previous day began to say, "Oh, how Allāh extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it! If not that Allāh had conferred favor on us, He would have caused it to swallow us. Oh, how the disbelievers do not succeed!"
Abdel HaleemThe next day, those who had, the day before, wished to be in his place exclaimed, ‘Alas [for you, Qarun]! It is God alone who gives what He will, abundantly or sparingly, to whichever He will of His creatures: if God had not been gracious to us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us too.’ Alas indeed! Those who deny the truth will never prosper.
Saheeh InternationalThat home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
Abdel HaleemWe grant the Home in the Hereafter to those who do not seek superiority on earth or spread corruption: the happy ending is awarded to those who are mindful of God.
Saheeh InternationalWhoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do.
Abdel HaleemWhoever comes before God with a good deed will receive a better reward; whoever comes with an evil deed will be punished only for what he has done.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, [O Muḥammad], He who imposed upon you the Qur’ān will take you back to a place of return. Say, "My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error."
Abdel HaleemHe who has made the Quran binding on you [Prophet] will bring you back home. So say, ‘My Lord knows best who has brought true guidance and who is blatantly astray.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers.
Abdel HaleemYou yourself could not have expected the Scripture to be sent to you; it came only as a mercy from your Lord. So give no help to the disbelievers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd never let them avert you from the verses of Allāh after they have been revealed to you. And invite [people] to your Lord. And never be of those who associate others with Allāh.
Abdel HaleemDo not let them turn you away from God’s revelations after they have been revealed to you. Call people to your Lord. Never become one of those who ascribe partners to God.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not invoke with Allāh another deity. There is no deity except Him. Everything will be destroyed except His Face. His is the judgement, and to Him you will be returned.
Abdel HaleemDo not call out to any other god beside God, for there is no god but Him. Everything will perish except His Face. His is the Judgement and to Him you shall all be brought back.
