Al-Furqan

The Criterion

Saheeh InternationalBlessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -

Abdel HaleemExalted is He who has sent the Differentiator down to His servant so that it may be a warning to all people.

Saheeh InternationalHe to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.

Abdel HaleemIt is He who has control over the heavens and earth and has no offspring––no one shares control with Him––and who created all things and made them to an exact measure.

Saheeh InternationalBut they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection.

Abdel HaleemYet the disbelievers take as their gods things beneath Him that create nothing, and are themselves created, that can neither harm nor help themselves, and have no control over death, life, or resurrection.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur’ān] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers say, ‘This can only be a lie he has forged with the help of others’––they themselves have done great wrong and told lies––

Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."

Abdel Haleemand they say, ‘It is just ancient fables, which he has had written down: they are dictated to him morning and evening.’

Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘It was sent down by Him who knows the secrets of the heavens and earth. He is all forgiving, all merciful.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?

Abdel HaleemThey also say, ‘What sort of messenger is this? He eats food and walks about in the marketplaces! Why has no angel been sent down to help him with his warnings?

Saheeh InternationalOr [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

Abdel HaleemWhy has he not been given treasure or a garden to supply his food?’ and the evildoers say, ‘The man you follow is simply under a spell.’

Saheeh InternationalLook how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.

Abdel HaleemSee what they think you are like! They have gone astray and cannot find the right way.

Saheeh InternationalBlessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that - gardens beneath which rivers flow - and could make for you palaces.

Abdel HaleemExalted is He who can, if He wishes, give you better things than these: Gardens graced with flowing streams, and palaces too.

Saheeh InternationalBut they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.

Abdel HaleemIt is actually the coming of the Hour that they reject: We have prepared a blazing fire for those who reject the Hour.

Saheeh InternationalWhen it [i.e., the Hellfire] sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.

Abdel HaleemWhen it sees them from a distance, they will hear it raging and roaring,

Saheeh InternationalAnd when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction.

Abdel Haleemand when they are hurled into a narrow part of it, chained together, they will cry out for death.

Saheeh International[They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."

Abdel Haleem‘Do not cry out this day for one death, but for many.’

Saheeh InternationalSay, "Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination.

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Which is better, this or the lasting Garden that those who are mindful of God have been promised as their reward and journey’s end?’

Saheeh InternationalFor them therein is whatever they wish, [while] abiding eternally. It is ever upon your Lord a promise [worthy to be] requested.

Abdel HaleemThere they will find everything they wish for, and there they will stay. [Prophet], this is a binding promise from your Lord.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allāh and will say, "Did you mislead these, My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?"

Abdel HaleemOn the Day He gathers them all together with those they worship beside Him, He will say, ‘Was it you [false gods] who led these creatures of Mine astray, or did they stray from the path by themselves?’

Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies [i.e., protectors]. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."

Abdel HaleemThey will say, ‘May You be exalted! We ourselves would never take masters other than You! But You granted them and their forefathers pleasures in this life, until they forgot Your Reminder and were ruined.’

Saheeh InternationalSo they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say, and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.

Abdel Haleem[God will say], ‘Now your gods have denounced what you say as lies: you cannot avoid the punishment; you will not get any help.’ If any of you commits such evil, We shall make him taste agonizing torment.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We did not send before you, [O Muḥammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.

Abdel HaleemNo messenger have We sent before you [Muhammad] who did not eat food and walk about in the marketplace. But We have made some of you a means of testing others- will you stand fast? Your Lord is always watching.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?" They have certainly become arrogant within themselves and [become] insolent with great insolence.

Abdel HaleemThose who do not fear to meet Us say, ‘Why are the angels not sent down to us?’ or ‘Why can we not see our Lord?’ They are too proud of themselves and too insolent.

Saheeh InternationalThe day they see the angels - no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, "Prevented and inaccessible."

Abdel HaleemThere will be no good news for the guilty on the Day they see the angels. The angels will say, ‘You cannot cross the forbidden barrier,’

Saheeh InternationalAnd We will approach [i.e., regard] what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.

Abdel Haleemand We shall turn to the deeds they have done and scatter them like dust.

Saheeh InternationalThe companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement and better resting place.

Abdel HaleemBut the companions in the Garden will have a better home on that Day, and a fairer place to rest.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] the Day when the heaven will split open with [emerging] clouds, and the angels will be sent down in successive descent.

Abdel HaleemOn the Day when the sky and its clouds are split apart and the angels sent down in streams,

Saheeh InternationalTrue sovereignty, that Day, is for the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day.

Abdel Haleemon that Day, true authority belongs to the Lord of Mercy. It will be a grievous Day for the disbelievers.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, "Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.

Abdel HaleemOn that Day the evildoer will bite his own hand and say, ‘If only I had taken the same path as the Messenger.

Saheeh InternationalOh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend.

Abdel HaleemWoe is me! If only I had not taken so and so as a friend-

Saheeh InternationalHe led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter."

Abdel Haleemhe led me away from the Revelation after it reached me. Satan has always betrayed mankind.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’ān as [a thing] abandoned."

Abdel HaleemThe Messenger has said, ‘Lord, my people treat this Quran as something to be shunned,’

Saheeh InternationalAnd thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.

Abdel Haleembut We have always appointed adversaries from the wicked, for every prophet: Your Lord is sufficient guide and helper.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Qur’ān not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers also say, ‘Why was the Quran not sent down to him all at once?’ We sent it in this way to strengthen your heart [Prophet]; We gave it to you in gradual revelation.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they do not come to you with an example [i.e., argument] except that We bring you the truth and the best explanation.

Abdel HaleemThey cannot put any argument to you without Our bringing you the truth and the best explanation.

Saheeh InternationalThe ones who are gathered on their faces to Hell - those are the worst in position and farthest astray in [their] way.

Abdel HaleemIt is those driven [falling], on their faces,to Hell who will be in the worst place- they are the furthest from the right path.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly given Moses the Scripture and appointed with him his brother Aaron as an assistant.

Abdel HaleemWe gave Moses the Book and appointed his brother Aaron to help him.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We said, "Go both of you to the people who have denied Our signs." Then We destroyed them with [complete] destruction.

Abdel HaleemWe said, ‘Go, both of you, to the people who have rejected Our signs.’ Later We destroyed those people utterly.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.

Abdel HaleemThe people of Noah, too: when they rejected their messengers, We drowned them and made them an example to all people. We have prepared a painful torment for the evildoers,

Saheeh InternationalAnd [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd and the companions of the well and many generations between them.

Abdel Haleemas We did for the people of Ad, Thamud, and al-Rass, and many generations in between.

Saheeh InternationalAnd for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.

Abdel HaleemTo each of them We gave warnings, and each of them We destroyed completely.

Saheeh InternationalAnd they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil [i.e., stones]. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.

Abdel HaleemThese disbelievers must have passed by the town that was destroyed by the terrible rain––did they not see it? Yet they do not expect to be raised from the dead.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when they see you, [O Muḥammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allāh has sent as a messenger?

Abdel HaleemWhenever they see you [Prophet] they ridicule you: ‘Is this the one God has sent as a messenger?

Saheeh InternationalHe almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.

Abdel HaleemHe might almost have led us astray from our gods if we had not stood so firmly by them.’ When they see the punishment, they will know who is furthest from the path.

Saheeh InternationalHave you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?

Abdel HaleemThink [Prophet] of the man who has taken his own passion as a god: are you to be his guardian?

Saheeh InternationalOr do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock. Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.

Abdel HaleemDo you think that most of them hear or understand? They are just like cattle- no, they are further from the path.

Saheeh InternationalHave you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.

Abdel HaleemDo you not see how your Lord lengthens the shade? If He had willed, He could have made it stand still- We made the sun its indicator-

Saheeh InternationalThen We [retract and] hold it with Us for a brief grasp.

Abdel Haleembut We gradually draw it towards Us, little by little.

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.

Abdel HaleemIt is He who made the night a garment for you, and sleep a rest, and made the day like a resurrection.

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy [i.e., rainfall], and We send down from the sky pure water

Abdel HaleemIt is He who sends the winds as heralds of good news before His Mercy. We send down pure water from the sky,

Saheeh InternationalThat We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men.

Abdel Haleemso that We can revive a dead land with it, and We give it as a drink to many animals and people We have created.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.

Abdel HaleemMany times We have repeated this to people so that they might take heed, but most persist in their ingratitude.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.

Abdel HaleemIf it had been Our will, We would have sent a warner to every town,

Saheeh InternationalSo do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a great striving.

Abdel Haleemso do not give in to the disbelievers: strive hard against them with this Quran.

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas [i.e., bodies of water], one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.

Abdel HaleemIt is He who released the two bodies of flowing water, one sweet and fresh and the other salty and bitter, and put an insurmountable barrier between them.

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who has created from water [i.e., semen] a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].

Abdel HaleemIt is He who creates human beings from fluid, then makes them kin by blood and marriage: your Lord is all powerful!

Saheeh InternationalBut they worship rather than Allāh that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].

Abdel HaleemYet instead of God they worship things that can neither benefit nor harm them: the disbeliever has always turned his back on his Lord.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

Abdel HaleemWe sent you only to give good news and warning.

Saheeh InternationalSay, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘I am not asking for any reward for it, but anyone who wishes should take a path to his Lord.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allāh] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, [fully] Aware -

Abdel HaleemPut your trust in the Living [God] who never dies, and celebrate His praise. He knows the sins of His servants well enough:

Saheeh InternationalHe who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)].

Abdel Haleemit is He who created the heavens and earth and what is between them in six Days, and then established Himself on the throne- He is the Lord of Mercy; He is the Best Informed.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.

Abdel HaleemYet when they are told, ‘Bow down before the Lord of Mercy,’ they say, ‘What is the Lord of Mercy? Should we bow down before anything you command?’ and they turn even further away.

Saheeh InternationalBlessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.

Abdel HaleemExalted is He who put constellations in the heavens, a radiant light, and an illuminating moon-

Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.

Abdel Haleemit is He who made the night and day follow each other- so anyone who wishes may be mindful or show gratitude.

Saheeh InternationalAnd the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,

Abdel HaleemThe servants of the Lord of Mercy are those who walk humbly on the earth, and who, when the foolish address them, reply, ‘Peace’;

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]

Abdel Haleemthose who spend the night bowed down or standing, worshipping their Lord,

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;

Abdel Haleemwho plead, ‘Our Lord, turn away from us the suffering of Hell, for it is a dreadful torment to suffer!

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

Abdel HaleemIt is an evil home, a foul resting place!’

Saheeh InternationalAnd [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate

Abdel HaleemThey are those who are neither wasteful nor niggardly when they spend, but keep to a just balance;

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who do not invoke with Allāh another deity or kill the soul which Allāh has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

Abdel Haleemthose who never invoke any other deity beside God, nor take a life, which God has made sacred, except in the pursuit of justice, nor commit adultery. (Whoever does these things will face the penalties:

Saheeh InternationalMultiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -

Abdel Haleemtheir torment will be doubled on the Day of Resurrection, and they will remain in torment, disgraced,

Saheeh InternationalExcept for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel Haleemexcept those who repent, believe, and do good deeds: God will change the evil deeds of such people into good ones. He is most forgiving, most merciful.

Saheeh InternationalAnd he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allāh with [accepted] repentance.

Abdel HaleemPeople who repent and do good deeds truly return to God.)

Saheeh InternationalAnd [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.

Abdel Haleem[The servants of the Lord of Mercy are] those who do not give false testimony, and who, when they see some frivolity, pass by with dignity;

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.

Abdel Haleemwho, when reminded of their Lord’s signs, do not turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to them;

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous."

Abdel Haleemthose who pray, ‘Our Lord, give us joy in our spouses and offspring. Make us good examples to those who are aware of You’.

Saheeh InternationalThose will be awarded the Chamber for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace,

Abdel HaleemThese servants will be rewarded with the highest place in Paradise for their steadfastness. There they will be met with greetings and peace.

Saheeh InternationalAbiding eternally therein. Good is the settlement and residence.

Abdel HaleemThere they will stay- a happy home and resting place!

Saheeh InternationalSay, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?" For you [disbelievers] have denied, so it [i.e., your denial] is going to be adherent.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet, tell the disbelievers], ‘What are you to my Lord without your supplication? But since you have written offthe truth as lies, the inevitable will happen.’
