Al-Anfal

The Spoils of War

Saheeh InternationalThey ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allāh and the Messenger." So fear Allāh and amend that which is between you and obey Allāh and His Messenger, if you should be believers.

Abdel HaleemThey ask you [Prophet] about [distributing] the battle gains. Say, ‘That is a matter for God and His Messenger, so be mindful of God and make things right between you. Obey God and His Messenger if you are true believers:

Saheeh InternationalThe believers are only those who, when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -

Abdel Haleemtrue believers are those whose hearts tremble with awe when God is mentioned, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, who put their trust in their Lord,

Saheeh InternationalThe ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

Abdel Haleemwho keep up the prayer and give to others out of what We provide for them.

Saheeh InternationalThose are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.

Abdel HaleemThose are the ones who truly believe. They have high standing with their Lord, forgiveness, and generous provision.’

Saheeh International[It is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,

Abdel HaleemFor it was your Lord who made you [Prophet] venture from your home for a true purpose––though a group of the believers disliked it

Saheeh InternationalArguing with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death while they were looking on.

Abdel Haleemand argued with you about the truth after it had been made clear, as if they were being driven towards a death they could see with their own eyes.

Saheeh International[Remember, O believers], when Allāh promised you one of the two groups - that it would be yours - and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours. But Allāh intended to establish the truth by His words and to eliminate the disbelievers

Abdel HaleemRemember how God promised you [believers] that one of the two enemy groups would fall to you: you wanted the unarmed group to be yours, but it was God’s will to establish the truth according to His Word and to finish off the disbelievers––

Saheeh InternationalThat He should establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals disliked it.

Abdel Haleemto prove the Truth to be true, and the false to be false, much as the guilty might dislike it.

Saheeh International[Remember] when you were asking help of your Lord, and He answered you, "Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another."

Abdel HaleemWhen you begged your Lord for help, He answered you, ‘I will reinforce you with a thousand angels in succession.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh made it not but good tidings and so that your hearts would be assured thereby. And victory is not but from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Abdel HaleemGod made this a message of hope to reassure your hearts: help comes only from God, He is mighty and wise.

Saheeh International[Remember] when He overwhelmed you with drowsiness [giving] security from Him and sent down upon you from the sky, rain by which to purify you and remove from you the evil [suggestions] of Satan and to make steadfast your hearts and plant firmly thereby your feet.

Abdel HaleemRemember when He gave you sleep as a reassurance from Him, and sent down water from the sky to cleanse you, to remove Satan’s pollution from you, to make your hearts strong and your feet firm.

Saheeh International[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip."

Abdel HaleemYour Lord revealed to the angels: ‘I am with you: give the believers firmness; I shall put terror into the hearts of the disbelievers- strike above their necks and strike all their fingertips.’

Saheeh InternationalThat is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh and His Messenger - indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Abdel HaleemThat was because they opposed God and His Messenger, and if anyone opposes God and His Messenger, God punishes them severely-

Saheeh International"That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

Abdel Haleem‘That is what you get! Taste that!’––and the torment of the Fire awaits the disbelievers.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, when you meet those who disbelieve advancing [in battle], do not turn to them your backs [in flight].

Abdel HaleemBelievers, when you meet the disbelievers in battle, never turn your backs on them:

Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allāh, and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.

Abdel Haleemif anyone does so on such a day- unless maneuvring to fight or to join a fighting group- he incurs the wrath of God, and Hell will be his home, a wretched destination!

Saheeh InternationalAnd you did not kill them, but it was Allāh who killed them. And you threw not, [O Muḥammad], when you threw, but it was Allāh who threw that He might test the believers with a good test. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Abdel HaleemIt was not you who killed them but God, and when you [Prophet] threw [sand at them] it was not your throw [that defeated them] but God’s, to do the believers a favour: God is all seeing and all knowing-

Saheeh InternationalThat [is so], and [also] that Allāh will weaken the plot of the disbelievers.

Abdel Haleem‘That is what you get!’––and God will weaken the disbelievers’ designs.

Saheeh InternationalIf you [disbelievers] seek the decision [i.e., victory] - the decision [i.e., defeat] has come to you. And if you desist [from hostilities], it is best for you; but if you return [to war], We will return, and never will you be availed by your [large] company at all, even if it should increase; and [that is] because Allāh is with the believers.

Abdel Haleem[Disbelievers], if you were seeking a decision, now you have witnessed one: if you stop here, it will be better for you. If you return, so shall We, and your forces, though greater in number, will be of no use to you. God is with the believers.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, obey Allāh and His Messenger and do not turn from him while you hear [his order].

Abdel HaleemBelievers, obey God and His Messenger: do not turn away when you are listening to him;

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.

Abdel Haleemdo not be like those who say, ‘We heard,’ though in fact they were not listening-

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allāh are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason [i.e., the disbelievers].

Abdel Haleemthe worst creatures in God’s eyes are those who are [wilfully] deaf and dumb, who do not reason.

Saheeh InternationalHad Allāh known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing.

Abdel HaleemIf God had known there was any good in them, He would have made them hear, but even if He had, they would still have turned away and taken no notice.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, respond to Allāh and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allāh intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.

Abdel HaleemBelievers, respond to God and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. Know that God comes between a man and his heart, and that you will be gathered to Him.

Saheeh InternationalAnd fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.

Abdel HaleemBeware of discord that harms not only the wrongdoers among you: know that God is severe in His punishment.

Saheeh InternationalAnd remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things - that you might be grateful.

Abdel HaleemRemember when you were few, victimized in the land, afraid that people might catch you, but God sheltered you and strengthened you with His help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, do not betray Allāh and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].

Abdel HaleemBelievers, do not betray God and the Messenger, or knowingly betray [other people’s] trust in you.

Saheeh InternationalAnd know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allāh has with Him a great reward.

Abdel HaleemBe aware that your possessions and your children are only a test, and that there is a tremendous reward with God.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, if you fear Allāh, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.

Abdel HaleemBelievers, if you remain mindful of God, He will give you a criterion [to tell right from wrong] and wipe out your bad deeds, and forgive you: God’s favour is great indeed.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember, O Muḥammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allāh plans. And Allāh is the best of planners.

Abdel HaleemRemember [Prophet] when the disbelievers plotted to take you captive, kill, or expel you. They schemed and so did God: He is the best of schemers.

Saheeh InternationalAnd when Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard. If we willed, we could say [something] like this. This is not but legends of the former peoples."

Abdel HaleemWhenever Our Revelation is recited to them they say, ‘We have heard all this before- we could say something like this if we wanted- this is nothing but ancient fables.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when they said, "O Allāh, if this should be the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."

Abdel HaleemThey also said, ‘God, if this really is the truth from You, then rain stones on us from the heavens, or send us some other painful punishment.’

Saheeh InternationalBut Allāh would not punish them while you, [O Muḥammad], are among them, and Allāh would not punish them while they seek forgiveness.

Abdel HaleemBut God would not send them punishment while you [Prophet] are in their midst, nor would He punish them if they sought forgiveness,

Saheeh InternationalBut why should Allāh not punish them while they obstruct [people] from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām and they were not [fit to be] its guardians? Its [true] guardians are not but the righteous, but most of them do not know.

Abdel Haleemyet why should God not punish them when they debar people from the Sacred Mosque, although they are not its [rightful] guardians? Only those mindful of God are its rightful guardians, but most of the disbelievers do not realize this.

Saheeh InternationalAnd their prayer at the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] was not except whistling and handclapping. So taste the punishment for what you disbelieved [i.e., practiced of deviations].

Abdel HaleemTheir prayers before the House are nothing but whistling and clapping. ‘So taste the punishment for your disbelief.’

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allāh. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.

Abdel HaleemThey use their wealth to bar people from the path of God, and they will go on doing so. In the end this will be a source of intense regret for them: they will be overcome and herded towards Hell.

Saheeh International[It is] so that Allāh may distinguish the wicked from the good and place the wicked some of them upon others and heap them all together and put them into Hell. It is those who are the losers.

Abdel HaleemGod will separate the bad from the good, place the bad on top of one another- heaping them all up together- and put them in Hell. They will be the losers.

Saheeh InternationalSay to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], tell the disbelievers that if they desist their past will be forgiven, but if they persist, they have an example in the fate of those who went before.

Saheeh InternationalAnd fight against them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion [i.e., worship], all of it, is for Allāh. And if they cease - then indeed, Allāh is Seeing of what they do.

Abdel Haleem[Believers], fight them until there is no more persecution, and all worship is devoted to God alone: if they desist, then God sees all that they do,

Saheeh InternationalBut if they turn away - then know that Allāh is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.

Abdel Haleembut if they pay no heed, be sure that God is your protector, the best protector and the best helper.

Saheeh InternationalAnd know that anything you obtain of war booty - then indeed, for Allāh is one fifth of it and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and the orphans, the needy, and the [stranded] traveler, if you have believed in Allāh and in that which We sent down to Our Servant on the day of criterion [i.e., decisive encounter] - the day when the two armies met [at Badr]. And Allāh, over all things, is competent.

Abdel HaleemKnow that one-fifth of your battle gains belongs to God and the Messenger, to close relatives and orphans, to the needy and travellers, if you believe in God and the revelation We sent down to Our servant on the day of the decision, the day when the two forces met in battle. God has power over all things.

Saheeh International[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allāh might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Abdel HaleemRemember when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the far side and the caravan was below you. If you had made an appointment to fight, you would have failed to keep it [but the battle took place] so that God might bring about something already ordained, so that those who were to die might die after seeing a clear proof, and so that those who were to live might live after seeing a clear proof- God is all hearing and all seeing.

Saheeh International[Remember, O Muḥammad], when Allāh showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allāh saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

Abdel Haleem[Prophet], remember when God made you see them in your sleep as few: if He had shown them to you [believers] as many, you would certainly have lost heart and argued about it, but God saved you. He knows the secrets of the heart.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and He made you [appear] as few in their eyes so that Allāh might accomplish a matter already destined. And to Allāh are [all] matters returned.

Abdel HaleemWhen you met He showed them to you as few, and He made you few in their eyes, so that He might bring about what has been ordained: everything goes back to God.

Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allāh much that you may be successful.

Abdel HaleemBelievers, when you meet a force in battle, stand firm and keep God firmly in mind, so that you may prosper.

Saheeh InternationalAnd obey Allāh and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.

Abdel HaleemObey God and His Messenger, and do not quarrel with one another, or you may lose heart and your spirit may desert you. Be steadfast: God is with the steadfast.

Saheeh InternationalAnd do not be like those who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people and avert [them] from the way of Allāh. And Allāh is encompassing of what they do.

Abdel HaleemDo not be like those who came out of their homes full of conceit, showing off to people, and barring others from the way of God- God has full knowledge of all that they do.

Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, "No one can overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector." But when the two armies sighted each other, he turned on his heels and said, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I see what you do not see; indeed, I fear Allāh. And Allāh is severe in penalty."

Abdel HaleemSatan made their foul deeds seem fair to them, and said, ‘No one will conquer you today, for I will be right beside you,’ but when the armies came within sight of one another he turned on his heels, saying, ‘This is where I leave you: I see what you do not, and I fear God- God is severe in His punishment.’

Saheeh International[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease [i.e., arrogance and disbelief] said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Abdel HaleemThe hypocrites and those who have sickness in their hearts said, ‘These people [the believers] must be deluded by their religion,’ but if anyone puts his trust in God, God is mighty and wise.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved... They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.

Abdel HaleemIf only you [Prophet] could see, when the angels take the souls of the disbelievers, how they strike their faces and backs: it will be said, ‘Taste the punishment of the Fire.

Saheeh InternationalThat is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."

Abdel HaleemThis is caused by what your own hands have stored up for you: God is never unjust to His creatures.’

Saheeh International[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allāh, so Allāh seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allāh is Powerful and severe in penalty.

Abdel HaleemThey are like Pharaoh’s people and those before them who ignored God’s signs, so God punished them for their sins: God is strong and severe in His punishment.

Saheeh InternationalThat is because Allāh would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Abdel Haleem[He did] this because God would never change a favour He had conferred on a people unless they changed what was within themselves. God is all hearing, all knowing.

Saheeh International[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers.

Abdel HaleemThey are indeed like Pharaoh’s people and those before them, who denied the signs of their Lord: We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned Pharaoh’s people- they were all evildoers.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allāh are those who have disbelieved, and they will not [ever] believe-

Abdel HaleemThe worst creatures in the sight of God are those who reject Him and will not believe;

Saheeh InternationalThe ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allāh.

Abdel Haleemwho, whenever you [Prophet] make a treaty with them, break it, for they have no fear of God.

Saheeh InternationalSo if you, [O Muḥammad], gain dominance over them in war, disperse by [means of] them those behind them that perhaps they will be reminded.

Abdel HaleemIf you meet them in battle, make a fearsome example of them to those who come after them, so that they may take heed.

Saheeh InternationalIf you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allāh does not like traitors.

Abdel HaleemAnd if you learn of treachery on the part of any people, throw their treaty back at them, for God does not love the treacherous.

Saheeh InternationalAnd let not those who disbelieve think they will escape. Indeed, they will not cause failure [to Allāh].

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers should not think they have won; they cannot escape.

Saheeh InternationalAnd prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allāh and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allāh knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allāh will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.

Abdel HaleemPrepare whatever forces you [believers] can muster, including warhorses, to frighten off God’s enemies and yours, and warn others unknown to you but known to God. Whatever you give in God’s cause will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.

Saheeh InternationalAnd if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Abdel HaleemBut if they incline towards peace, you [Prophet] must also incline towards it, and put your trust in God: He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.

Saheeh InternationalBut if they intend to deceive you - then sufficient for you is Allāh. It is He who supported you with His help and with the believers

Abdel HaleemIf they intend to deceive you, God is enough for you: it was He who strengthened you with His help,

Saheeh InternationalAnd brought together their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have brought their hearts together; but Allāh brought them together. Indeed, He is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Abdel Haleemand with the believers, and brought their hearts together. Even if you had given away everything in the earth you could not have done this, but God brought them together: God is mighty and wise.

Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, sufficient for you is Allāh and for whoever follows you of the believers.

Abdel HaleemProphet, God is enough for you, and for the believers who follow you.

Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are steadfast], they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.

Abdel HaleemProphet, urge the believers to fight: if there are twenty of you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred, and a hundred of you, if steadfast, will overcome a thousand of the disbelievers, for they are people who do not understand.

Saheeh InternationalNow, Allāh has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you a thousand, they will overcome two thousand by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the steadfast.

Abdel HaleemBut God has lightened your burden for now, knowing that there is weakness in you––a steadfast hundred of you will defeat two hundred and a steadfast thousand of you will defeat two thousand, by God’s permission: God is with the steadfast.

Saheeh InternationalIt is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allāh's enemies] in the land. You [i.e., some Muslims] desire the commodities of this world, but Allāh desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Abdel HaleemIt is not right for a prophet to take captives before he has conquered the battlefield. You [people] desire the transient goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter [for you]- God is mighty and wise-

Saheeh InternationalIf not for a decree from Allāh that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.

Abdel Haleemand had it not been preordained by God, a severe punishment would have come upon you for what you have taken.

Saheeh InternationalSo consume what you have taken of war booty [as being] lawful and good, and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

Abdel HaleemSo enjoy in a good and lawful manner the things you have gained in war and be mindful of God: He is forgiving and merciful.

Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allāh knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."

Abdel HaleemProphet, tell those you have taken captive, ‘If God knows of any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what has been taken from you, and He will forgive you: God is forgiving and merciful.’

Saheeh InternationalBut if they intend to betray you - then they have already betrayed Allāh before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

Abdel HaleemBut if they mean to betray you, they have betrayed God before, and He has given you mastery over them: He is all knowing, all wise.

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no support of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allāh is Seeing of what you do.

Abdel HaleemThose who believed and emigrated [to Medina] and struggled for God’s cause with their possessions and persons, and those who gave refuge and help, are all allies of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you are not responsible for their protection until they have done so. But if they seek help from you against persecution, it is your duty to assist them, except against people with whom you have a treaty: God sees all that you do.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so [i.e., ally yourselves with other believers], there will be fitnah [i.e., disbelief and oppression] on earth and great corruption.

Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers support one another. If you do not do the same, there will be persecution in the land and great corruption.

Saheeh InternationalBut those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.

Abdel HaleemThose who believed and emigrated, and struggled for God’s cause, and those who gave refuge and help- they are the true believers and they will have forgiveness and generous provision.

Saheeh InternationalAnd those who believed after [the initial emigration] and emigrated and fought with you - they are of you. But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of all things.

Abdel HaleemAnd those who came to believe afterwards, and emigrated and struggled alongside you, they are part of you, but relatives still have prior claim over one another in God’s Scripture: God has full knowledge of all things.
