Al-Mulk

The Sovereignty

Saheeh InternationalBlessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent -

Abdel HaleemExalted is He who holds all control in His hands; who has power over all things;

Saheeh International[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -

Abdel Haleemwho created death and life to test you [people] and reveal which of you does best––He is the Mighty, the Forgiving;

Saheeh International[And] who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks?

Abdel Haleemwho created the seven heavens, one above the other. You will not see any flaw in what the Lord of Mercy creates. Look again! Can you see any flaw?

Saheeh InternationalThen return [your] vision twice again. [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued.

Abdel HaleemLook again! And again! Your sight will turn back to you, weak and defeated.

Saheeh InternationalAnd We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

Abdel HaleemWe have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning devils for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire.

Saheeh InternationalAnd for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination.

Abdel HaleemFor those who defy their Lord We have prepared the torment of Hell: an evil destination.

Saheeh InternationalWhen they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

Abdel HaleemThey will hear it drawing in its breath when they are thrown in. It blazes forth,

Saheeh InternationalIt almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"

Abdel Haleemalmost bursting with rage. Its keepers will ask every group that is thrown in, ‘Did no one come to warn you?’

Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

Abdel HaleemThey will reply, ‘Yes, a warner did come to us, but we did not believe him. We said, “God has revealed nothing: you are greatly misguided”.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

Abdel HaleemThey will say, ‘If only we had listened, or reasoned, we would not be with the inhabitants of the blazing fire,’ and

Saheeh InternationalAnd they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze.

Abdel Haleemthey will confess their sins. Away with the inhabitants of the blazing fire!

Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.

Abdel HaleemBut there is forgiveness and a great reward for those who fear their Lord though they cannot see Him.

Saheeh InternationalAnd conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

Abdel HaleemWhether you keep your words secret or state them openly, He knows the contents of every heart.

Saheeh InternationalDoes He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Aware?

Abdel HaleemHow could He who created not know His own creation, when He is the Most Subtle, the All Aware?

Saheeh InternationalIt is He who made the earth tame for you - so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision - and to Him is the resurrection.

Abdel HaleemIt is He who has made the earth manageable for you––travel its regions; eat His provision- and to Him you will be resurrected.

Saheeh InternationalDo you feel secure that He who is above would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?

Abdel HaleemAre you sure that He who is in Heaven will not make the earth swallow you up with a violent shudder?

Saheeh InternationalOr do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.

Abdel HaleemAre you sure that He who is in Heaven will not send a whirlwind to pelt you with stones? You will come to know what My warning means.

Saheeh InternationalAnd already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

Abdel HaleemThose who went before them also disbelieved- how terrible was My condemnation!

Saheeh InternationalDo they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.

Abdel HaleemDo they not see the birds above them spreading and closing their wings? It is only the Lord of Mercy who holds them up: He watches over everything.

Saheeh InternationalOr who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers are not but in delusion.

Abdel HaleemWhat force can help you if the Lord of Mercy does not? The disbelievers are truly deluded.

Saheeh InternationalOr who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision? But they have persisted in insolence and aversion.

Abdel HaleemWho can provide for you if He withholds His provision? Yet they persist in their insolence and their avoidance of the Truth.

Saheeh InternationalThen is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path?

Abdel HaleemWho is better guided: someone who falls on his face, or someone who walks steadily on a straight path?

Saheeh InternationalSay, "It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful."

Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘It is He who brought you into being, He who endowed you with hearing, sight, and understanding- what small thanks you give!’

Saheeh InternationalSay, "It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered."

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘It is He who scattered you throughout the earth, He to whom you will be gathered.’

Saheeh InternationalAnd they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

Abdel HaleemThey say, ‘If what you say is true, when will this promise be fulfilled?’

Saheeh InternationalSay, "The knowledge is only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘God alone has knowledge of this: my only duty is to give clear warning.’

Saheeh InternationalBut when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."

Abdel HaleemWhen they see it close at hand, the disbelievers’ faces will be gloomy, and it will be said, ‘This is what you were calling for.’

Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered: whether Allāh should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Just think- regardless of whether God destroys me and my followers or has mercy on us- who will protect the disbelievers from an agonizing torment?’

Saheeh InternationalSay, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘He is the Lord of Mercy; we believe in Him; we put our trust in Him. You will come to know in time who is in obvious error.’

Saheeh InternationalSay, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"

Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Just think: if all your water were to sink deep into the earth who could give you flowing water in its place?’
