Saheeh InternationalThose who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allāh - He will waste their deeds.
Abdel HaleemGod will bring to nothing the deeds of those who disbelieve and bar others from the way of God,
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muḥammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.
Abdel Haleembut He will overlook the bad deeds of those who have faith, do good deeds, and believe in what has been sent down to Muhammad––the truth from their Lord––and He will put them into a good state.
Saheeh InternationalThat is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allāh present to the people their comparisons.
Abdel HaleemThis is because the disbelievers follow falsehood, while the believers follow the truth from their Lord. In this way God shows people their true type.
Saheeh InternationalSo when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure [their] bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allāh - never will He waste their deeds.
Abdel HaleemWhen you meet the disbelievers in battle, strike them in the neck, and once they are defeated, bind any captives firmly––later you can release them by grace or by ransom––until the toils of war have ended. That [is the way]. God could have defeated them Himself if He had willed, but His purpose is to test some of you by means of others. He will not let the deeds of those who are killed for His cause come to nothing;
Saheeh InternationalHe will guide them and amend their condition
Abdel HaleemHe will guide them and put them into a good state;
Saheeh InternationalAnd admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.
Abdel HaleemHe will admit them into the Garden He has already made known to them.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, if you support Allāh, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe! If you help God, He will help you and make you stand firm.
Saheeh InternationalBut those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds.
Abdel HaleemAs for the disbelievers, how wretched will be their state! God has brought their deeds to nothing.
Saheeh InternationalThat is because they disliked what Allāh revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
Abdel HaleemIt is because they hate what God has sent down that He has caused their deeds to go to waste.
Saheeh InternationalHave they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allāh destroyed [everything] over them, and for the disbelievers is something comparable.
Abdel HaleemHave they not travelled the earth and seen how those before them met their end? God destroyed them utterly: a similar fate awaits the disbelievers.
Saheeh InternationalThat is because Allāh is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.
Abdel HaleemThat is because God protects the believers while the disbelievers have no one to protect them:
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them.
Abdel HaleemGod will admit those who believe and do good deeds to Gardens graced with flowing streams; the disbelievers may take their fill of pleasure in this world, and eat as cattle do, but the Fire will be their home.
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a city was stronger than your city [i.e., Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.
Abdel HaleemWe have destroyed many a town stronger than your own [Prophet]- the town which [chose to] expel you- and they had no one to help them.
Saheeh InternationalSo is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?
Abdel HaleemCan those who follow clear proof from their Lord be compared to those whose foul deeds are made to seem alluring to them, those who follow their own desires?
Saheeh InternationalIs the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord... [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
Abdel HaleemHere is a picture of the Garden promised to the pious: rivers of water forever pure, rivers of milk forever fresh, rivers of wine, a delight for those who drink, rivers of honey clarified and pure, [all] flow in it; there they will find fruit of every kind; and they will find forgiveness from their Lord. How can this be compared to the fate of those stuck in the Fire, given boiling water to drink that tears their bowels?
Saheeh InternationalAnd among them, [O Muḥammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allāh has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.
Abdel HaleemSome of these people listen to you [Prophet], but, once they leave your presence, they sneer at those who have been given knowledge, saying, ‘What was that he just said?’ These are the ones whose hearts God has sealed, those who follow their own desires.
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.
Abdel HaleemGod has increased the guidance of those who follow the right path, and given them their awareness [of Him].
Saheeh InternationalThen do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then how [i.e., what good] to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?
Abdel HaleemWhat are the disbelievers waiting for, other than the Hour which will come upon them unawares? Its signs are already here, but once the Hour has actually arrived, what use will it be then to take heed?
Saheeh InternationalSo know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.
Abdel HaleemSo [Prophet], bear in mind that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for your sins and for the sins of believing men and women. God knows whenever any of you move, and whenever any of you stay still.
Saheeh InternationalThose who believe say, "Why has a sūrah not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]
Abdel HaleemThose who believe ask why no sura [about fighting] has been sent down. Yet when a decisive sura [that mentions fighting] is sent down, you can see the sick at heart looking at you [Prophet] and visibly fainting at the prospect of death- better for them
Saheeh InternationalObedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allāh, it would have been better for them.
Abdel Haleemwould be obedience and fitting words; it would also be better for them to be true to God when the decision to fight has been made.
Saheeh InternationalSo would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?
Abdel Haleem‘If you turn away now, could it be that you will go on to spread corruption all over the land and break your ties of kinship?’
Saheeh InternationalThose [who do so] are the ones that Allāh has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
Abdel HaleemThese are the ones God has rejected, making their ears deaf and their eyes blind.
Saheeh InternationalThen do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?
Abdel HaleemWill they not contemplate the Quran? Do they have locks on their hearts?
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.
Abdel HaleemThose who turn on their heels after being shown guidance are duped and tempted by Satan;
Saheeh InternationalThat is because they said to those who disliked what Allāh sent down, "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allāh knows what they conceal.
Abdel Haleemthey say to those who hate what God has sent down, ‘We will obey you in some matters’––God knows their secret schemes.
Saheeh InternationalThen how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?
Abdel HaleemHow will they feel when the angels take them in death and beat their faces and their backs
Saheeh InternationalThat is because they followed what angered Allāh and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
Abdel Haleembecause they practised things that incurred God’s wrath, and disdained to please Him? He makes their deeds go to waste.
Saheeh InternationalOr do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allāh would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?
Abdel HaleemDo the corrupt at heart assume that God will not expose their malice?
Saheeh InternationalAnd if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allāh knows your deeds.
Abdel HaleemWe could even point them out to you [Prophet] if We wished, and then you could identify them by their marks, but you will know them anyway by the tone of their speech. God knows everything you [people] do.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allāh] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.
Abdel HaleemWe shall test you to see which of you strive your hardest and are steadfast; We shall test the sincerity of your assertions.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and opposed the Messenger after guidance had become clear to them - never will they harm Allāh at all, and He will render worthless their deeds.
Abdel HaleemThose who disbelieve, bar others from God’s path, and oppose the Messenger when they have been shown guidance, do not harm God in any way. He will make their deeds go to waste-
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
Abdel Haleembelievers, obey God and the Messenger: do not let your deeds go to waste-
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and then died while they were disbelievers - never will Allāh forgive them.
Abdel HaleemGod will not forgive those who disbelieve, bar others from God’s path, and die as disbelievers.
Saheeh InternationalSo do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allāh is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds.
Abdel HaleemSo [believers] do not lose heart and cry out for peace. It is you who have the upper hand: God is with you. He will not begrudge you the reward for your [good] deeds:
Saheeh International[This] worldly life is only amusement and diversion. And if you believe and fear Allāh, He will give you your rewards and not ask you for your properties.
Abdel Haleemthe life of this world is only a game, a pastime, but if you believe and are mindful of God, He will recompense you. He does not ask you to give up [all] your posses-sions-
Saheeh InternationalIf He should ask you for them and press you, you would withhold, and He would expose your hatred [i.e., unwillingness].
Abdel Haleemyou would be grudging if He were to ask you and press you for them, and He would bring your ill-will to light-
Saheeh InternationalHere you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allāh - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allāh is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away [i.e., refuse], He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you.
Abdel Haleemthough now you are called upon to give [a little] for the sake of God, some of you are grudging. Whoever is grudging is so only towards himself: God is the source of wealth and you are the needy ones. He will substitute other people for you if you turn away, and they will not be like you.
