Surah 40 · Makki · 85 ayat
The Forgiver
Saheeh InternationalḤā, Meem.
Abdel HaleemHa Mim
Saheeh InternationalThe revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,
Abdel HaleemThis Scripture is sent down from God, the Almighty, the All Knowing,
Saheeh InternationalThe forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.
Abdel HaleemForgiver of sins and Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, infinite in bounty. There is no god but Him; to Him is the ultimate return.
Saheeh InternationalNo one disputes concerning the signs of Allāh except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land.
Abdel HaleemIt is only the disbelievers who dispute God’s revelations. [Prophet], do not be dazzled by their movements back and forth across the land.
Saheeh InternationalThe people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
Abdel HaleemBefore them the people of Noah rejected the truth and so did those who formed opposition after them: every community schemed to destroy its messenger and strove to refute truth with falsehood; but it was I who destroyed them. How terrible My punishment was!
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.
Abdel HaleemIn this way your Lord’s sentence was passed against the disbelievers that they would be the inhabitants of the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalThose [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.
Abdel HaleemThose [angels] who carry the Throne and those who surround it celebrate the praise of their Lord and have faith in Him. They beg forgiveness for the believers: ‘Our Lord, You embrace all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who turn to You and follow Your path. Save them from the pains of Hell
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Abdel Haleemand admit them, Lord, to the lasting Gardens You have promised to them, together with their righteous ancestors, spouses, and offspring: You alone are the Almighty, the All Wise.
Saheeh InternationalAnd protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day - You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment."
Abdel HaleemProtect them from all evil deeds: those You protect on that Day from [the punishment for] evil deeds will receive Your mercy- that is the supreme triumph.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."
Abdel HaleemBut those who disbelieved will be told, ‘When you were called to the faith and rejected it, God’s disgust with you was even greater then than the self-disgust you feel [today].’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"
Abdel HaleemThey will say, ‘Our Lord, twice You have caused us to be lifeless and twice You have brought us to life. Now we recognize our sins. Is there any way out?’
Saheeh International[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."
Abdel Haleem[They will be told], ‘This is all because when God alone was invoked you rejected this, yet when others were associated with Him you believed [in them].’ Judgement belongs to God the Most High, the Most Great.
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].
Abdel HaleemIt is He who shows you [people] His signs and sends water down from the sky to sustain you, though only those who turn to God will take heed.
Saheeh InternationalSo invoke Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.
Abdel HaleemSo call upon God and dedicate your religion to Him alone, however hateful this may be to the disbelievers:
Saheeh International[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command [i.e., revelation] upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.
Abdel HaleemHe is exalted in rank, the Lord of the Throne. He sends revelations with His teachings to whichever of His servants He will, in order to warn of the Day of Meeting,
Saheeh InternationalThe Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.
Abdel Haleemthe Day when they will come out and nothing about them will be concealed from God. ‘Who has control today?’ ‘God, the One, the All Powerful.
Saheeh InternationalThis Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
Abdel HaleemToday each soul will be rewarded for whatever it has done; today no injustice will be done. God is swift in reckoning.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.
Abdel HaleemWarn them [Prophet] of the ever-approaching Day, when hearts are at throats, choking them. The evildoer will have no friends, nor any intercessor to be heeded.
Saheeh InternationalHe knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.
Abdel HaleemGod is aware of the most furtive of glances, and of all that hearts conceal:
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh judges with truth, while those they invoke besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, Allāh - He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Abdel HaleemGod will judge with truth, while those they invoke besides Him will not judge at all. God is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.
Saheeh InternationalHave they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allāh seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allāh any protector.
Abdel HaleemHave they not travelled through the land and seen how those who lived before them met their end? They were stronger than them and made a more impressive mark on the land, yet God destroyed them for their sins- they had no one to defend them against Him-
Saheeh InternationalThat was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.
Abdel Haleembecause messengers repeatedly came to them with clear signs and still they rejected them. God destroyed them: He is truly full of strength, severe in punishment.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority
Abdel HaleemWe sent Moses with Our signs and clear authority
Saheeh InternationalTo Pharaoh, Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."
Abdel Haleemto Pharaoh, Haman, and Korah and they said, ‘Sorcerer! Liar!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, "Kill the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their women alive." But the plan of the disbelievers is not except in error.
Abdel HaleemWhen he brought the truth to them from Us, they said, ‘Kill the sons of those who believe with him; spare only their women’- the scheming of those who reject the truth can only go wrong-
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption in the land."
Abdel Haleemand Pharaoh said, ‘Leave me to kill Moses- let him call upon his Lord!- for I fear he may cause you to change your religion, or spread disorder in the land.’
Saheeh InternationalBut Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."
Abdel HaleemMoses said, ‘I seek refuge with my Lord and yours from every tyrant who refuses to believe in the Day of Reckoning.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allāh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allāh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.
Abdel HaleemA secret believer from Pharaoh’s family said, ‘How can you kill a man just for saying, “My Lord is God”? He has brought you clear signs from your Lord- if he is a liar, on his own head be it- and if he is truthful, then at least some of what he has threatened will happen to you. God does not guide any rebellious, outrageous liar.
Saheeh InternationalO my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."
Abdel HaleemMy people, as masters in the land you have the power today, but who will help us against God’s might if it comes upon us?’ But Pharaoh said, ‘I have told you what I think; I am guiding you along the right path.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he who believed said, "O my people, indeed I fear for you [a fate] like the day of the companies -
Abdel HaleemThe believer said, ‘My people, I fear your fate will be the fate of those others who opposed [their prophets]:
Saheeh InternationalLike the custom of the people of Noah and of ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them. And Allāh wants no injustice for [His] servants.
Abdel Haleemthe fate of the people of Noah, Ad, Thamud, and those who came after them- God never wills injustice on His creatures.
Saheeh InternationalAnd O my people, indeed I fear for you the Day of Calling -
Abdel HaleemMy people, I fear for you on the Day you will cry out to one another,
Saheeh InternationalThe Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.
Abdel Haleemthe Day you will turn tail and flee with no one to defend you from God! Whoever God leaves to stray will have no one to guide him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."
Abdel HaleemJoseph came to you before with clear signs, but you never ceased to doubt the message he brought you. When he died, you said, “God will not send another messenger.”’ In this way God leaves the doubting rebels to stray-
Saheeh InternationalThose who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allāh and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allāh seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.
Abdel Haleemthose who dispute God’s messages, with no authority given to them, are doing something that is loathed by God and by those who believe. In this way God seals up the heart of every arrogant tyrant.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Pharaoh said, "O Hāmān, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways -
Abdel HaleemPharaoh said, ‘Haman, build me a tall tower so that I may reach the ropes that lead
Saheeh InternationalThe ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.
Abdel Haleemto the heavens to look for this God of Moses. I am convinced that he is lying.’ In this way the evil of Pharaoh’s deed was made alluring to him and he was barred from the right path- his scheming led only to ruin.
Saheeh InternationalAnd he who believed said, "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the way of right conduct.
Abdel HaleemThe believer said, ‘My people, follow me! I will guide you to the right path.
Saheeh InternationalO my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.
Abdel HaleemMy people, the life of this world is only a brief enjoyment; it is the Hereafter that is the lasting home.
Saheeh InternationalWhoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.
Abdel HaleemWhoever does evil will be repaid with its like; whoever does good and believes, be it a man or a woman, will enter Paradise and be provided for without measure.
Saheeh InternationalAnd O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?
Abdel HaleemMy people, why do I call you to salvation when you call me to the Fire?
Saheeh InternationalYou invite me to disbelieve in Allāh and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
Abdel HaleemYou call me to disbelieve in God and to associate with Him things of which I have no knowledge; I call you to the Mighty, the Forgiving One.
Saheeh InternationalAssuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allāh, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.
Abdel HaleemThere is no doubt that what you call me to serve is not fit to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter: our return is to God alone, and it will be the rebels who will inhabit the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalAnd you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."
Abdel Haleem[One Day] you will remember what I am saying to you now, so I commit my case to God: God is well aware of His servants.’
Saheeh InternationalSo Allāh protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -
Abdel HaleemSo God saved him from the harm they planned. A terrible punishment engulfed Pharaoh’s people;
Saheeh InternationalThe Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
Abdel Haleemthey will be brought before the Fire morning and evening. On the Day the Hour comes, it will be said, ‘Throw Pharaoh’s people into the worst torment.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"
Abdel HaleemIn the Fire they will quarrel with one another: the weak will say to the haughty, ‘We were your followers, so can you now relieve us from some share of the Fire?’
Saheeh InternationalThose who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."
Abdel Haleembut they will say, ‘We are all in this together. God has judged between His creatures.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
Abdel HaleemThose in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, ‘Ask your Lord to lessen our suffering for one day,’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."
Abdel Haleembut they will say, ‘Did your messengers not come to you with clear evidence of the truth?’ They will say, ‘Yes they did,’ and the keeper will say, ‘You can plead, then, but the pleas of disbelievers will always be in vain.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -
Abdel HaleemWe support Our messengers and the believers, in the present life and on the Day when witnesses arise.
Saheeh InternationalThe Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].
Abdel HaleemOn the Day when excuses will not profit the evildoers, their fate will be rejection and they will have the worst of homes.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture
Abdel HaleemWe gave Moses guidance and passed down the Scripture to the Children of Israel,
Saheeh InternationalAs guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.
Abdel Haleemas a guide and a reminder to people of understanding.
Saheeh InternationalSo be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
Abdel HaleemSo be patient, Prophet, for what God has promised is sure to come. Ask forgiveness for your sins; praise your Lord morning and evening.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Abdel HaleemAs for those who, with no authority to do so, dispute God’s messages, there is nothing in their hearts but a thirst for a greatness they will never attain. Seek refuge in God, for He is the All Hearing, the All Seeing.
Saheeh InternationalThe creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
Abdel HaleemThe creation of the heavens and earth is greater by far than the creation of mankind, though most people do not know it.
Saheeh InternationalAnd not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.
Abdel HaleemThe blind and the sighted are not equal, just as those who believe and do good works and those who do evil are not equal: how seldom you reflect!
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.
Abdel HaleemThe Final Hour is sure to come, without doubt, but most people do not believe.
Saheeh InternationalAnd your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
Abdel HaleemYour Lord says, ‘Call on Me and I will answer you; those who are too proud to serve Me will enter Hell humiliated.’
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight. Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.
Abdel HaleemIt is God who has given you the night in which to rest and the day in which to see. God is truly bountiful to people, but most people do not give thanks.
Saheeh InternationalThat is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
Abdel HaleemSuch is God your Lord, the Creator of all things: there is no god but Him. How can you be so deluded?
Saheeh InternationalThus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.
Abdel HaleemThis is how deluded those who deny God’s messages are.
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
Abdel HaleemIt is God who has given you the earth for a dwelling place and the heavens for a canopy. He shaped you, formed you well, and provided you with good things. Such is God your Lord, so glory be to Him, the Lord of the Worlds.
Saheeh InternationalHe is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
Abdel HaleemHe is the Living One and there is no god but Him, so call on Him, and dedicate your religion entirely to Him. Praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds.
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."
Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘Since clear evidence has come to me from my Lord I am forbidden to serve those you call upon besides God: I am commanded to submit to the Lord of the Worlds.’
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.
Abdel HaleemIt is He who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then from a tiny, clinging form, then He brought you forth as infants, then He allowed you to reach maturity, then He let you grow old- though some of you die sooner- and reach your appointed term so that you may reflect.
Saheeh InternationalHe it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.
Abdel HaleemIt is He who gives life and death, and when He ordains a thing, He says only ‘Be’ and it is.
Saheeh InternationalDo you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do you see how deluded those who dispute God’s messages are-
Saheeh InternationalThose who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,
Abdel Haleemthose who reject the Scripture and the messages We have sent through Our messengers? They will find out
Saheeh InternationalWhen the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged
Abdel Haleemwhen, with iron collars and chains around their necks, they are dragged
Saheeh InternationalIn boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].
Abdel Haleeminto scalding water, and then burned in the Fire,
Saheeh InternationalThen it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]
Abdel Haleemand asked, ‘Where now are those you called upon
Saheeh InternationalOther than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.
Abdel Haleembesides God?’ They will say, ‘They have abandoned us: those we called upon before were really nothing at all.’ ‘This is how God lets disbelievers go astray,
Saheeh International[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.
Abdel Haleemall because on earth you revelled in untruth and ran wild.
Saheeh InternationalEnter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
Abdel HaleemEnter the gates of Hell, there to remain- an evil home for the arrogant.’
Saheeh InternationalSo be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
Abdel HaleemSo be patient [Prophet], for God’s promise is sure: whether We show you part of what We have promised them in this life or whether We take your soul back to Us first, it is to Us that they will be returned.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
Abdel HaleemWe have sent other messengers before you- some We have mentioned to you and some We have not- and no messenger could bring about a sign except with God’s permission. When [the Day] God ordained comes, just judgement will be passed between them: there and then, those who followed falsehood will be lost.
Saheeh InternationalIt is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.
Abdel HaleemIt is God who provides livestock for you, some for riding and some for your food;
Saheeh InternationalAnd for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts; and upon them and upon ships you are carried.
Abdel Haleemyou have other benefits in them too. You can reach any destination you wish on them: they carry you, as ships carry you [on the sea].
Saheeh InternationalAnd He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?
Abdel HaleemHe shows you His signs: which of God’s signs do you still ignore?
Saheeh InternationalHave they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
Abdel HaleemHave they not travelled through the land and seen how those who lived before them met their end? They were more numerous than them, stronger than them, and made a more impressive mark on the land, yet what they achieved was of no use to them at all.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
Abdel HaleemWhen messengers came to them with clear signs, they revelled in the knowledge they had, and so they were engulfed by the very punishment they mocked:
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."
Abdel Haleemwhen they saw Our punishment, they said, ‘We believe in God alone; we reject any partner we ascribed to Him,’
Saheeh InternationalBut never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
Abdel Haleembut believing after seeing Our punishment did not benefit them at all- this has always been God’s way of dealing with His creatures- there and then the disbelievers were lost.
