Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, fear Allāh and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
Abdel HaleemProphet, be mindful of God and do not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites: God is all knowing, all wise.
Saheeh InternationalAnd follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
Abdel HaleemFollow what your Lord reveals to you: God is well aware of all your actions.
Saheeh InternationalAnd rely upon Allāh; and sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
Abdel HaleemPut your trust in God: God is enough to trust.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allāh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.
Abdel HaleemGod does not put two hearts within a man’s breast. He does not turn the wives you reject and liken to your mothers’ backs into your real mothers; nor does He make your adopted sons into real sons. These are only words from your mouths, while God speaks the truth and guides people to the right path.
Saheeh InternationalCall them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allāh. But if you do not know their fathers - then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel HaleemName your adopted sons after their real fathers: this is more equitable in God’s eyes––if you do not know who their fathers are [they are your] ‘brothers-in-religion’ and proteges. You will not be blamed if you make a mistake, only for what your hearts deliberately intend; God is most forgiving and merciful.
Saheeh InternationalThe Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed.
Abdel HaleemThe Prophet is more protective towards the believers than they are themselves, while his wives are their mothers. In God’s Scripture, blood-relatives have a stronger claim than other believers and emigrants, though you may still bestow gifts on your proteges. All this is written in the Scripture.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muḥammad], when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, the son of Mary; and We took from them a solemn covenant
Abdel HaleemWe took a solemn pledge from the prophets- from you [Muhammad], from Noah, from Abraham, from Moses, from Jesus, son of Mary- We took a solemn pledge from all of them:
Saheeh InternationalThat He may question the truthful about their truth. And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.
Abdel HaleemGod will question [even] the truthful about their sincerity, and for those who reject the truth He has prepared a painful torment.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, remember the favor of Allāh upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allāh, of what you do, Seeing.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, remember God’s goodness to you when mighty armies massed against you: We sent a violent wind and invisible forces against them. God sees all that you do.
Saheeh International[Remember] when they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes shifted [in fear], and hearts reached the throats, and you assumed about Allāh [various] assumptions.
Abdel HaleemThey massed against you from above and below; your eyes rolled [with fear], your hearts rose into your throats, and you thought [ill] thoughts of God.
Saheeh InternationalThere the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.
Abdel HaleemThere the believers were sorely tested and deeply shaken:
Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, "Allāh and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion,"
Abdel Haleemthe hypocrites and the sick at heart said, ‘God and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when a faction of them said, "O people of Yathrib, there is no stability for you [here], so return [home]." And a party of them asked permission of the Prophet, saying, "Indeed, our houses are exposed [i.e., unprotected]," while they were not exposed. They did not intend except to flee.
Abdel HaleemSome of them said, ‘People of Yathrib, you will not be able to withstand [the attack], so go back!’ Some of them asked the Prophet’s permission to leave, saying, ‘Our houses are exposed,’ even though they were not- they just wanted to run away:
Saheeh InternationalAnd if they had been entered upon from all its [surrounding] regions and fitnah [i.e., disbelief] had been demanded of them, they would have done it and not hesitated over it except briefly.
Abdel Haleemhad the city been invaded from all sides, and the enemy invited them to rebel, they would have done so almost without hesitation.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they had already promised Allāh before not to turn their backs [i.e., flee]. And ever is the promise to Allāh [that about which one will be] questioned.
Abdel HaleemYet they had already promised God that they would not turn tail and flee, and a promise to God will be answered for.
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "Never will fleeing benefit you if you should flee from death or killing; and then [if you did], you would not be given enjoyment [of life] except for a little."
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], say, ‘Running away will not benefit you. If you manage to escape death or slaughter, you will only be permitted to enjoy [life] for a short while.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Who is it that can protect you from Allāh if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?" And they will not find for themselves besides Allāh any protector or any helper.
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘If God wishes to harm you, who can protect you? If God wishes to show you mercy, who can prevent Him?’ They will find no one but God to protect or help them.
Saheeh InternationalAlready Allāh knows the hinderers among you and those [hypocrites] who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and do not go to battle, except for a few,
Abdel HaleemGod knows exactly who among you hinder others, who [secretly] say to their brothers, ‘Come and join us,’ who hardly ever come out to fight,
Saheeh InternationalIndisposed toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allāh has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.
Abdel Haleemwho begrudge you [believers] any help. When fear comes, you [Prophet] see them looking at you with eyes rolling like someone in their death throes; when fear has passed, they attack you with sharp tongues and begrudge you any good. Such men do not believe, and God brings their deeds to nothing- that is all too easy for God.
Saheeh InternationalThey think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn. And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little.
Abdel HaleemThey think the joint forces have not gone, and if the joint forces did come again they would wish they were in the desert, wandering among the Bedouin and seeking news about you [from a safe distance]. Even if they were with you [believers], they would hardly fight at all.
Saheeh InternationalThere has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allāh an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allāh often.
Abdel HaleemThe Messenger of God is an excellent model for those of you who put your hope in God and the Last Day and remember Him often.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allāh and His Messenger had promised us, and Allāh and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.
Abdel HaleemWhen the believers saw the joint forces, they said, ‘This is what God and His Messenger promised us: the promise of God and His Messenger is true,’ and this only served to increase their faith and submission to God.
Saheeh InternationalAmong the believers are men true to what they promised Allāh. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -
Abdel HaleemThere are men among the believers who honoured their pledge to God: some of them have fulfilled it by death, and some are still waiting. They have not changed in the least.
Saheeh InternationalThat Allāh may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel Haleem[Such trials are ordained] so that God may reward the truthful for their honesty and punish the hypocrites, if He so wills, or He may relent towards them, for God is forgiving and merciful.
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And sufficient was Allāh for the believers in battle, and ever is Allāh Powerful and Exalted in Might.
Abdel HaleemGod sent back the disbelievers along with their rage- they gained no benefit–– and spared the believers from fighting. He is strong and mighty.
Saheeh InternationalAnd He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party [i.e., their men] you killed, and you took captive a party [i.e., the women and children].
Abdel HaleemHe brought those People of the Book who supported them down from their strongholds and put panic into their hearts. Some of them you [believers] killed and some you took captive.
Saheeh InternationalAnd He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their properties and a land which you have not trodden. And ever is Allāh, over all things, competent.
Abdel HaleemHe passed on to you their land, their houses, their possessions, and a land where you had not set foot: God has power over everything.
Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, say to your wives, "If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and give you a gracious release.
Abdel HaleemProphet, say to your wives,‘If your desire is for the present life and its finery, then come, I will make provision for you and release you with kindness,
Saheeh InternationalBut if you should desire Allāh and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter - then indeed, Allāh has prepared for the doers of good among you a great reward."
Abdel Haleembut if you desire God, His Messenger, and the Final Home, then remember that God has prepared great rewards for those of you who do good.’
Saheeh InternationalO wives of the Prophet, whoever of you should commit a clear immorality - for her the punishment would be doubled two fold, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.
Abdel HaleemWives of the Prophet, if any of you does something clearly outrageous, she will be doubly punished- that is easy for God-
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever of you devoutly obeys Allāh and His Messenger and does righteousness - We will give her her reward twice; and We have prepared for her a noble provision.
Abdel Haleembut if any of you is obedient to God and His Messenger and does good deeds, know that We shall give her a double reward and have prepared a generous provision for her.
Saheeh InternationalO wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allāh, then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
Abdel HaleemWives of the Prophet, you are not like any other woman. If you are truly mindful of God, do not speak too softly in case the sick at heart should lust after you, but speak in an appropriate manner;
Saheeh InternationalAnd abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. Allāh intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
Abdel Haleemstay at home, and do not flaunt your finery as they used to in the pagan past; keep up the prayer, give the prescribed alms, and obey God and His Messenger. God wishes to keep uncleanness away from you, people of the [Prophet’s] House, and to purify you thoroughly.
Saheeh InternationalAnd remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allāh and wisdom. Indeed, Allāh is ever Subtle and Aware.
Abdel HaleemRemember what is recited in your houses of God’s revelations and wisdom, for God is all subtle, all aware.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allāh often and the women who do so - for them Allāh has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
Abdel HaleemFor men and women who are devoted to God- believing men and women, obedient men and women, truthful men and women, steadfast men and women, humble men and women, charitable men and women, fasting men and women, chaste men and women, men and women who remember God often- God has prepared forgiveness and a rich reward.
Saheeh InternationalIt is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allāh and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.
Abdel HaleemWhen God and His Messenger have decided on a matter that concerns them, it is not fitting for any believing man or woman to claim freedom of choice in that matter: whoever disobeys God and His Messenger is far astray.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember, O Muḥammad], when you said to the one on whom Allāh bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allāh," while you concealed within yourself that which Allāh is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allāh has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort [i.e., guilt] concerning the wives of their claimed [i.e., adopted] sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.
Abdel HaleemWhen you [Prophet] said to the man who had been favoured by God and by you, ‘Keep your wife and be mindful of God,’ you hid in your heart what God would later reveal: you were afraid of people, but it is more fitting that you fear God. When Zayd no longer wanted her, We gave her to you in marriage so that there might be no fault in believers marrying the wives of their adopted sons after they no longer wanted them. God’s command must be carried out:
Saheeh InternationalThere is not to be upon the Prophet any discomfort concerning that which Allāh has imposed upon him. [This is] the established way of Allāh with those [prophets] who have passed on before. And ever is the command of Allāh a destiny decreed.
Abdel Haleemthe Prophet is not at fault for what God has ordained for him. This was God’s practice with those who went before- God’s command must be fulfilled-
Saheeh International[Allāh praises] those who convey the messages of Allāh and fear Him and do not fear anyone but Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.
Abdel Haleem[and with all] those who deliver God’s messages and fear only Him and no other: God’s reckoning is enough.
Saheeh InternationalMuḥammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allāh and seal [i.e., last] of the prophets. And ever is Allāh, of all things, Knowing.
Abdel HaleemMuhammad is not the father of any one of you men; he is God’s Messenger and the seal of the prophets: God knows everything.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, remember Allāh with much remembrance
Abdel HaleemBelievers, remember God often
Saheeh InternationalAnd exalt Him morning and afternoon.
Abdel Haleemand glorify Him morning and evening:
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful.
Abdel Haleemit is He who blesses you, as do His angels, in order to lead you out of the depths of darkness into the light. He is ever merciful towards the believers-
Saheeh InternationalTheir greeting the Day they meet Him will be, "Peace." And He has prepared for them a noble reward.
Abdel Haleemwhen they meet Him they will be greeted with ‘Peace’- and He has prepared a generous reward for them.
Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner
Abdel HaleemProphet, We have sent you as a witness, as a bearer of good news and warning,
Saheeh InternationalAnd one who invites to Allāh, by His permission, and an illuminating lamp.
Abdel Haleemas one who calls people to God by His leave, as a light-giving lamp.
Saheeh InternationalAnd give good tidings to the believers that they will have from Allāh great bounty.
Abdel HaleemGive the believers the good news that great bounty awaits them from God.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites and disregard their annoyance, and rely upon Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
Abdel HaleemDo not give in to the disbelievers and the hypocrites: ignore the harm they cause you and put your trust in God. God is enough to trust.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them [i.e., consummated the marriage], then there is not for you any waiting period to count concerning them. So provide for them and give them a gracious release.
Abdel HaleemBelievers, you have no right to expect a waiting period when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them: make provision for them and release them in an honourable way.
Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allāh has returned to you [of captives] and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her; [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers. We certainly know what We have made obligatory upon them concerning their wives and those their right hands possess, [but this is for you] in order that there will be upon you no discomfort [i.e., difficulty]. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel HaleemProphet, We have made lawful for you the wives whose bride gift you have paid, and any slaves God has assigned to you through war, and the daughters of your uncles and aunts on your father’s and mother’s sides, who migrated with you. Also any believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to wed- this is only for you [Prophet] and not the rest of the believers: We know exactly what We have made obligatory for them concerning their wives and slave-girls- so you should not be blamed: God is most forgiving, most merciful.
Saheeh InternationalYou, [O Muḥammad], may put aside whom you will of them or take to yourself whom you will. And any that you desire of those [wives] from whom you had [temporarily] separated - there is no blame upon you [in returning her]. That is more suitable that they should be content and not grieve and that they should be satisfied with what you have given them - all of them. And Allāh knows what is in your hearts. And ever is Allāh Knowing and Forbearing.
Abdel HaleemYou may make any of [your women] wait and receive any of them as you wish, but you will not be at fault if you invite one whose turn you have previously set aside: this way it is more likely that they will be satisfied and will not be distressed and will all be content with what you have given them. God knows what is in your hearts: God is all knowing, forbearing.
Saheeh InternationalNot lawful to you, [O Muḥammad], are [any additional] women after [this], nor [is it] for you to exchange them for [other] wives, even if their beauty were to please you, except what your right hand possesses. And ever is Allāh, over all things, an Observer.
Abdel HaleemYou [Prophet] are not permitted to take any further wives, nor to exchange the wives you have for others, even if these attract you with their beauty. But this does not apply to your slave-girls: God is watchful over all.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allāh is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allāh or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allāh an enormity.
Abdel HaleemBelievers, do not enter the Prophet’s apartments for a meal unless you are given permission to do so; do not linger until [a meal] is ready. When you are invited, go in; then, when you have taken your meal, leave. Do not stay on and talk, for that would offend the Prophet, though he would shrink from asking you to leave. God does not shrink from the truth. When you ask his wives for something, do so from behind a screen: this is purer both for your hearts and for theirs. It is not right for you to offend God’s Messenger, just as you should never marry his wives after him: that would be grievous in God’s eyes.
Saheeh InternationalWhether you reveal a thing or conceal it, indeed Allāh is ever, of all things, Knowing.
Abdel HaleemGod has full knowledge of all things, whether you reveal them or not.
Saheeh InternationalThere is no blame upon them [i.e., women] concerning their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons or their women or those their right hands possess [i.e., slaves]. And fear Allāh. Indeed Allāh is ever, over all things, Witness.
Abdel HaleemThe Prophet’s wives are not to blame [if they are seen by] their fathers, their sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, or their slaves. [Wives of the Prophet], be mindful of God. God observes everything.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] peace.
Abdel HaleemGod and His angels bless the Prophet- so, you who believe, bless him too and give him greetings of peace.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who abuse Allāh and His Messenger - Allāh has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.
Abdel HaleemThose who insult God and His Messenger will be rejected by God in this world and the next- He has prepared a humiliating torment for them-
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned [i.e., deserved] have certainly borne upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.
Abdel Haleemand those who undeservedly insult believing men and women will bear the guilt of slander and flagrant sin.
Saheeh InternationalO Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel HaleemProphet, tell your wives, your daughters, and women believers to make their outer garments hang low over them so as to be recog-nized and not insulted: God is most forgiving, most merciful.
Saheeh InternationalIf the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease and those who spread rumors in al-Madīnah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little,
Abdel HaleemIf the hypocrites, the sick at heart, and those who spread lies in the city do not desist, We shall rouse you [Prophet] against them, and then they will only be your neighbours in this city for a short while.
Saheeh InternationalAccursed wherever they are found, [being] seized and massacred completely.
Abdel HaleemThey will be rejected. Wherever they are found, they will be arrested and put to death.
Saheeh International[This is] the established way of Allāh with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allāh any change.
Abdel HaleemThis has been God’s practice with those who went before. You will find no change in God’s practices.
Saheeh InternationalPeople ask you concerning the Hour. Say, "Knowledge of it is only with Allāh. And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near."
Abdel HaleemPeople ask you about the Hour. Say, ‘God alone has knowledge of it.’ How could you [Prophet] know? The Hour may well be near.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh has cursed the disbelievers and prepared for them a Blaze.
Abdel HaleemGod has rejected the disbelievers and prepared a blazing fire for them.
Saheeh InternationalAbiding therein forever, they will not find a protector or a helper.
Abdel HaleemThere they will stay permanently, with no one to befriend or support them.
Saheeh InternationalThe Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say, "How we wish we had obeyed Allāh and obeyed the Messenger."
Abdel HaleemOn the Day when their faces are being turned about in the Fire, they will say, ‘If only we had obeyed God and the Messenger,’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.
Abdel Haleemand ‘Lord! We obeyed our masters and our chiefs, and they led us astray.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
Abdel HaleemLord! Give them a double punishment and reject them completely.’
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allāh cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allāh, was distinguished.
Abdel HaleemBelievers, do not be like those who insulted Moses- God cleared him of their allegations and he was highly honoured in God’s eyes.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, fear Allāh and speak words of appropriate justice.
Abdel HaleemBelievers, be mindful of God, speak in a direct fashion and to good purpose,
Saheeh InternationalHe will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
Abdel Haleemand He will put your deeds right for you and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys God and His Messenger will truly achieve a great triumph.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
