Abdel HaleemAlif Lam Mim
Saheeh InternationalAllāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.
Abdel HaleemGod: there is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful.
Saheeh InternationalHe has sent down upon you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
Abdel HaleemStep by step, He has sent the Scripture down to you [Prophet] with the Truth, confirming what went before: He sent down the Torah and the Gospel
Saheeh InternationalBefore, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Criterion [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh will have a severe punishment, and Allāh is Exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.
Abdel Haleemearlier as a guide for people and He has sent down the distinction [between right and wrong]. Those who deny God’s revelations will suffer severe torment: God is almighty and capable of retribution.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, from Allāh nothing is hidden in the earth nor in the heaven.
Abdel HaleemNothing on earth or in heaven is hidden from God:
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Abdel Haleemit is He who shapes you all in the womb as He pleases. There is no God but Him, the Mighty, the Wise:
Saheeh InternationalIt is He who has sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allāh. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.
Abdel Haleemit is He who has sent this Scripture down to you [Prophet]. Some of its verses are definite in meaning- these are the cornerstone of the Scripture- and others are ambiguous. The perverse at heart eagerly pursue the ambiguities in their attempt to make trouble and to pin down a specific meaning of their own: only God knows the true meaning. Those firmly grounded in knowledge say, ‘We believe in it: it is all from our Lord’- only those with real perception will take heed-
Saheeh International[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.
Abdel Haleem‘Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Grant us Your mercy: You are the Ever Giving.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allāh does not fail in His promise."
Abdel HaleemOur Lord, You will gather all people on the Day of which there is no doubt: God never breaks His promise.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire.
Abdel HaleemNeither their possessions nor their children will be any use to the disbelievers against God. The disbelievers will be fuel for the Fire,
Saheeh International[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied Our signs, so Allāh seized them for their sins. And Allāh is severe in penalty.
Abdel Haleemjust as Pharaoh’s people and their predecessors denied Our revelations, and God punished them for their sins: God is severe in punishing.
Saheeh InternationalSay to those who disbelieve, "You will be overcome and gathered together to Hell, and wretched is the resting place."
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], say to the disbelievers, ‘You will be defeated and driven together into Hell, a foul resting place.
Saheeh InternationalAlready there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allāh and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight. But Allāh supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.
Abdel HaleemYou have already seen a sign in the two armies that met in battle, one fighting for God’s cause and the other made up of disbelievers. With their own eyes [the former] saw [the latter] to be twice their number, but God helps whoever He will. There truly is a lesson in this for all with eyes to see.’
Saheeh InternationalBeautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allāh has with Him the best return [i.e., Paradise].
Abdel HaleemThe love of desirable things is made alluring for men- women, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farmland- these may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allāh will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allāh. And Allāh is Seeing [i.e., aware] of [His] servants -
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], say, ‘Would you like me to tell you of things that are better than all of these? Their Lord will give those who are mindful of God Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will stay with pure spouses and God’s good pleasure- God is fully aware of His servants-
Saheeh InternationalThose who say, "Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire,"
Abdel Haleemthose who say, “Our Lord, we believe, so forgive us our sins and protect us from suffering in the Fire,”
Saheeh InternationalThe patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allāh], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn.
Abdel Haleemthose who are steadfast, truthful, truly devout, who give [in God’s cause] and pray before dawn for forgiveness.’
Saheeh InternationalAllāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Abdel HaleemGod bears witness that there is no god but Him, as do the angels and those who have knowledge. He upholds justice. There is no god but Him, the Almighty, the All Wise.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account.
Abdel HaleemTrue Religion, in God’s eyes, is islam: [devotion to Him alone]. Those who were given the Scripture disagreed out of rivalry, only after they had been given knowledge- if anyone denies God’s revelations, God is swift to take account-
Saheeh InternationalSo if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted myself to Allāh [in Islām], and [so have] those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture and [to] the unlearned, "Have you submitted yourselves?" And if they submit [in Islām], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away - then upon you is only the [duty of] notification. And Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants.
Abdel Haleemif they argue with you [Prophet], say, ‘I have devoted myself to God alone and so have my followers.’ Ask those who were given the Scripture, as well as those without one, ‘Do you too devote yourselves to Him alone?’ If they do, they will be guided, but if they turn away, your only duty is to convey the message. God is aware of His servants.
Saheeh InternationalThose who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and kill the prophets without right and kill those who order justice from among the people - give them tidings of a painful punishment.
Abdel HaleemGive news of agonizing torment to those who ignore God’s revelations, who unjustifiably kill prophets, who kill those who command that justice is done:
Saheeh InternationalThey are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and for them there will be no helpers.
Abdel Haleemthe deeds of such people will come to nothing in this world and in the next and no one will help them.
Saheeh InternationalDo you not consider, [O Muḥammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allāh that it should arbitrate between them; then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.
Abdel HaleemHave you considered those who were given a share of the Scripture? When they are asked to accept judgement from God’s Scripture, some of them turn their backs and walk away, all because they declare,
Saheeh InternationalThat is because they say, "Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing.
Abdel Haleem‘The Fire will only touch us for a limited number of days.’ The lies they have invented have led them astray in their own religion.
Saheeh InternationalSo how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
Abdel HaleemHow will they fare when We gather them together for a Day of which there is no doubt, when every soul will be paid in full for what it has done, and they will not be wronged?
Saheeh InternationalSay, "O Allāh, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘God, holder of all control, You give control to whoever You will and remove it from whoever You will; You elevate whoever You will and humble whoever You will. All that is good lies in Your hand: You have power over everything.
Saheeh InternationalYou cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account [i.e., limit or measure]."
Abdel HaleemYou merge night into day and day into night; You bring the living out of the dead and the dead out of the living; You provide limitlessly for whoever You will.’
Saheeh InternationalLet not believers take disbelievers as allies [i.e., supporters or protectors] rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing [i.e., no association] with Allāh, except when taking precaution against them in prudence. And Allāh warns you of Himself, and to Allāh is the [final] destination.
Abdel HaleemThe believers should not make the disbelievers their allies rather than other believers- anyone who does such a thing will isolate himself completely from God- except when you need to protect yourselves from them. God warns you to beware of Him: the Final Return is to God.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allāh knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And Allāh is over all things competent.
Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘God knows everything that is in your hearts, whether you conceal or reveal it; He knows everything in the heavens and earth; God has power over all things.’
Saheeh InternationalThe Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allāh warns you of Himself, and Allāh is Kind to [His] servants."
Abdel HaleemOn the Day when every soul finds all the good it has done present before it, it will wish all the bad it has done to be far, far away. God warns you to beware of Him, but God is compassionate towards His servants.
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "If you should love Allāh, then follow me, [so] Allāh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘If you love God, follow me, and God will love you and forgive you your sins; God is most forgiving, most merciful.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Obey Allāh and the Messenger. But if you turn away - then indeed, Allāh does not like the disbelievers."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Obey God and the Messenger,’ but if they turn away, [know that] God does not love those who ignore [His commands].
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ʿImrān over the worlds -
Abdel HaleemGod chose Adam, Noah, Abraham’s family, and the family of Imran, over all other people,
Saheeh InternationalDescendants, some of them from others. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
Abdel Haleemin one line of descent- God hears and knows all.
Saheeh International[Mention, O Muḥammad], when the wife of ʿImrān said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing."
Abdel HaleemImran’s wife said, ‘Lord, I have dedicated what is growing in my womb entirely to You; so accept this from me. You are the One who hears and knows all,’
Saheeh InternationalBut when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allāh was most knowing of what she delivered, and the male is not like the female. "And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]."
Abdel Haleembut when she gave birth, she said, ‘My Lord! I have given birth to a girl’- God knew best what she had given birth to: the male is not like the female- ‘ I name her Mary and I commend her and her offspring to Your protection from the rejected Satan.’
Saheeh InternationalSo her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."
Abdel HaleemHer Lord graciously accepted her and made her grow in goodness, and entrusted her to the charge of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah went in to see her in her sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions. He said, ‘Mary, how is it you have these provisions?’ and she said, ‘They are from God: God provides limitlessly for whoever He will.’
Saheeh InternationalAt that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
Abdel HaleemThere and then Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, ‘Lord, from Your grace grant me virtuous offspring: You hear every prayer.’
Saheeh InternationalSo the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."
Abdel HaleemThe angels called out to him, while he stood praying in the sanctuary, ‘God gives you news of John, confirming a Word from God. He will be noble and chaste, a prophet, one of the righteous.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when I am so old and my wife is barren?’ [An angel] said, ‘It will be so: God does whatever He will.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My Lord, give me a sign.’ ‘Your sign,’ [the angel] said, ‘is that you will not communicate with anyone for three days, except by gestures. Remember your Lord often; celebrate His glory in the evening and at dawn.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
Abdel HaleemThe angels said to Mary: ‘Mary, God has chosen you and made you pure: He has truly chosen you above all women.
Saheeh InternationalO Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
Abdel HaleemMary, be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself in worship, bow down with those who pray.’
Saheeh InternationalThat is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.
Abdel HaleemThis is an account of things beyond your knowledge that We reveal to you [Muhammad]: you were not present among them when they cast lots to see which of them should take charge of Mary, you were not present with them when they argued [about her].
Saheeh International[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].
Abdel HaleemThe angels said, ‘Mary, God gives you news of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, who will be held in honour in this world and the next, who will be one of those brought near to God.
Saheeh InternationalHe will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous."
Abdel HaleemHe will speak to people in his infancyand in his adulthood. He will be one of the righteous.’
Saheeh InternationalShe said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.
Abdel HaleemShe said, ‘My Lord, how can I have a son when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] said, ‘This is how God creates what He will: when He has ordained something, He only says, “Be”, and it is.
Saheeh InternationalAnd He will teach him writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel
Abdel HaleemHe will teach him the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel,
Saheeh InternationalAnd [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allāh. And I cure the blind [from birth] and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allāh. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
Abdel HaleemHe will send him as a messenger to the Children of Israel: “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make the shape of a bird for you out of clay, then breathe into it and, with God’s permission, it will become a real bird; I will heal the blind and the leper, and bring the dead back to life with God’s permission; I will tell you what you may eat and what you may store up in your houses. There truly is a sign for you in this, if you are believers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [I have come] confirming what was before me of the Torah and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allāh and obey me.
Abdel HaleemI have come to confirm the truth of the Torah which preceded me, and to make some things lawful to you which used to be forbidden. I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. Be mindful of God, obey me:
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.'"
Abdel HaleemGod is my Lord and your Lord, so serve Him- that is a straight path.”’
Saheeh InternationalBut when Jesus felt [persistence in] disbelief from them, he said, "Who are my supporters for [the cause of] Allāh?" The disciples said, "We are supporters for Allāh. We have believed in Allāh and testify that we are Muslims [submitting to Him].
Abdel HaleemWhen Jesus realized they [still] did not believe, he said, ‘Who will help me in God’s cause?’ The disciples said, ‘We will be God’s helpers; we believe in God- witness our devotion to Him.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and have followed the messenger [i.e., Jesus], so register us among the witnesses [to truth]."
Abdel HaleemLord, we believe in what You have revealed and we follow the messenger: record us among those who bear witness [to the Truth].’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they [i.e., the disbelievers] planned, but Allāh planned. And Allāh is the best of planners.
Abdel HaleemThe [disbelievers] schemed but God also schemed; God is the Best of Schemers.
Saheeh International[Mention] when Allāh said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify [i.e., free] you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allāh alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.
Abdel HaleemGod said, ‘Jesus, I will take you back and raise you up to Me: I will purify you of the disbelievers. To the Day of Resurrection I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieved. Then you will all return to Me and I will judge between you regarding your differences.
Saheeh InternationalAnd as for those who disbelieved, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers."
Abdel HaleemI will make the disbelievers suffer severely in this world and the next; no one will help them.’
Saheeh InternationalBut as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allāh does not like the wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemGod will pay those who believe and do good deeds their reward in full; God does not love evildoers.
Saheeh InternationalThis is what We recite to you, [O Muḥammad], of [Our] verses and the precise [and wise] message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
Abdel HaleemWe relate to you [Muhammad] this revelation, a decisive statement.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the example of Jesus to Allāh is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.
Abdel HaleemIn God’s eyes Jesus is just like Adam: He created him from dust, said to him, ‘Be’, and he was.
Saheeh InternationalThe truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.
Abdel HaleemThis is the truth from your Lord, so do not be one of those who doubt.
Saheeh InternationalThen whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allāh upon the liars [among us]."
Abdel HaleemIf anyone disputes this with you now that you have been given this knowledge, say, ‘Come, let us gather our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, and let us pray earnestly and invoke God’s rejection on those of us who are lying.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, this is the true narration. And there is no deity except Allāh. And indeed, Allāh is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Abdel HaleemThis is the truth of the matter: there is no god but God; God is the Exalted, the Decider.’
Saheeh InternationalBut if they turn away, then indeed - Allāh is Knowing of the corrupters.
Abdel HaleemIf they turn away, [know that] God is well aware of anyone who causes corruption.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allāh and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allāh." But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘People of the Book, let us arrive at a statement that is common to us all: we worship God alone, we ascribe no partner to Him, and none of us takes others beside God as lords.’ If they turn away, say, ‘Witness our devotion to Him.’
Saheeh InternationalO People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Then will you not reason?
Abdel HaleemPeople of the Book, why do you argue about Abraham when the Torah and the Gospels were not revealed until after his time? Do you not understand?
Saheeh InternationalHere you are - those who have argued about that of which you have [some] knowledge, but why do you argue about that of which you have no knowledge? And Allāh knows, while you know not.
Abdel HaleemYou argue about some things of which you have some knowledge, but why do you argue about things of which you know nothing? God knows and you do not.
Saheeh InternationalAbraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allāh]. And he was not of the polytheists.
Abdel HaleemAbraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was upright and devoted to God, never an idolater,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allāh] and this prophet [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] and those who believe [in his message]. And Allāh is the Ally of the believers.
Abdel Haleemand the people who are closest to him are those who truly follow his ways, this Prophet, and [true] believers- God is close to [true] believers.
Saheeh InternationalA faction of the People of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they perceive [it] not.
Abdel HaleemSome of the People of the Book would dearly love to lead you [believers] astray, but they only lead themselves astray, though they do not realize it.
Saheeh InternationalO People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while you witness [to their truth]?
Abdel HaleemPeople of the Book, why do you deny God’s revelations when you can see they are true?
Saheeh InternationalO People of the Scripture, why do you mix [i.e., confuse] the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]?
Abdel HaleemPeople of the Book, why do you mix truth with falsehood? Why do you hide the truth when you recognize it?
Saheeh InternationalAnd a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion],
Abdel HaleemSome of the People of the Book say, ‘At the beginning of the day, believe in what has been revealed to these believers [the Muslims], then at the end of the day reject it, so that they too may turn back,
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not trust except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of Allāh. [Do you fear] lest someone be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?" Say, "Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand of Allāh - He grants it to whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Wise."
Abdel Haleembut do not sincerely believe in anyone unless he follows your own religion’- [Prophet], tell them, ‘True guidance is the guidance of God’- [they say], ‘Do not believe that anyone else could be given a revelation similar to what you were given, or that they could use it to argue against you in your Lord’s presence.’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘All grace is in God’s hands: He grants it to whoever He will- He is all embracing, all knowing-
Saheeh InternationalHe selects for His mercy whom He wills. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
Abdel Haleemand He singles out for His mercy whoever He will. His grace is infinite.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned." And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know [it].
Abdel HaleemThere are People of the Book who, if you [Prophet] entrust them with a heap of gold, will return it to you intact, but there are others of them who, if you entrust them with a single dinar, will not return it to you unless you keep standing over them, because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.’ They tell a lie against God and they know it.
Saheeh InternationalBut yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allāh - then indeed, Allāh loves those who fear Him.
Abdel HaleemNo indeed! God loves those who keep their pledges and are mindful of Him,
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allāh and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allāh will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.
Abdel Haleembut those who sell out God’s covenant and their own oaths for a small price will have no share in the life to come. God will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Resurrection- He will not cleanse them [of their sins]- agonizing torment awaits them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allāh," but it is not from Allāh. And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know.
Abdel HaleemThere are some who twist the Scripture with their tongues to make you [people] think that what they say is part of the Scripture when it is not; they say it is from God when it is not; they attribute lies to God and they know it.
Saheeh InternationalIt is not for a human [prophet] that Allāh should give him the Scripture and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allāh," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied."
Abdel HaleemNo person to whom God had given the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood would ever say to people, ‘Be my servants, not God’s.’ [He would say], ‘You should be devoted to God because you have taught the Scripture and studied it closely.’
Saheeh InternationalNor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?
Abdel HaleemHe would never command you to take angels and prophets as lords. How could he command you to be disbelievers after you had devoted yourselves to God?
Saheeh InternationalAnd [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allāh took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allāh] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."
Abdel HaleemGod took a pledge from the prophets, saying, ‘If, after I have bestowed Scripture and wisdom upon you, a messenger comes confirming what you have been given, you must believe in him and support him. Do you affirm this and accept My pledge as binding on you?’ They said, ‘We do.’ He said, ‘Then bear witness and I too will bear witness.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient.
Abdel HaleemThose who turn away after this are the ones who break pledges.
Saheeh InternationalSo is it other than the religion of Allāh they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?
Abdel HaleemDo they seek anything other than submission to God? Everyone in the heavens and earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly; they will all be returned to Him.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "We have believed in Allāh and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants [al-Asbāṭ], and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him."
Abdel HaleemSay [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever desires other than Islām as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
Abdel HaleemIf anyone seeks a religion other than [islam] complete devotion to God, it will not be accepted from him: he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter.
Saheeh InternationalHow shall Allāh guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Abdel HaleemWhy would God guide people who deny the truth, after they have believed and acknowledged that the Messenger is true, and after they have been shown clear proof? God does not guide evildoers:
Saheeh InternationalThose - their recompense will be that upon them is the curse of Allāh and the angels and the people, all together,
Abdel Haleemsuch people will be rewarded with rejection by God, by the angels, by all people,
Saheeh InternationalAbiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved,
Abdel Haleemand so they will remain, with no relief or respite for their suffering.
Saheeh InternationalExcept for those who repent after that and correct themselves. For indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel HaleemNot so those who afterwards repent and mend their ways- God is most forgiving and merciful-
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve [i.e., reject the message] after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray.
Abdel Haleem[although] the repentance of those who, having believed, then increase in their disbelief, will not be accepted. They are the ones who have gone [far] astray:
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - never would the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.
Abdel Haleemthose who disbelieve and die disbelievers will not be saved even if they offer enough gold to fill the entire earth. Agonizing torment is in store for them, and there will be no one to help them.
Saheeh InternationalNever will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.
Abdel HaleemNone of you [believers] will attain true piety unless you give out of what you cherish: whatever you give, God knows about it very well.
Saheeh InternationalAll food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel [i.e., Jacob] had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muḥammad], "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."
Abdel HaleemExcept for what Israel made unlawful for himself, all food was lawful to the Children of Israel before the Torah was revealed. Say, ‘Bring the Torah and read out [the relevant passage] if you are telling the truth.
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever invents about Allāh untruth after that - then those are [truly] the wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemThose who persist in making up lies and attributing them to God after this are the wrongdoers.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Allāh has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists."
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], say, ‘God speaks the truth, so follow Abraham’s religion: he had true faith and he was never an idolater.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
Abdel HaleemThe first House [of worship] to be established for people was the one at Mecca. It is a blessed place; a source of guidance for all people;
Saheeh InternationalIn it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.
Abdel Haleemthere are clear signs in it; it is the place where Abraham stood to pray; whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty owed to God by people who are able to undertake it. Those who reject this [should know that] God has no need of anyone.
Saheeh InternationalSay, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while Allāh is Witness over what you do?"
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘People of the Book, why do you reject God’s revelations? God witnesses everything you do.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allāh those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘People of the Book, why do you turn the believers away from God’s path and try to make it crooked, when you yourselves [should be] witnesses to the [truth]? God is not heedless of anything you do.’
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, some of those who were given the Scripture would turn you into disbelievers if you were to yield to them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allāh and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allāh has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.
Abdel HaleemHow can you disbelieve when God’s revelations are being recited to you and His Messenger is living among you? Whoever holds fast to God will be guided to the straight path.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, be mindful of God, as is His due, and make sure you devote yourselves to Him, to your dying moment.
Saheeh InternationalAnd hold firmly to the rope of Allāh all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allāh upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.
Abdel HaleemHold fast to God’s rope all together; do not split into factions. Remember God’s favour to you: you were enemies and then He brought your hearts together and you became brothers by His grace; you were about to fall into a pit of Fire and He saved you from it- in this way God makes His revelations clear to you so that you may be rightly guided.
Saheeh InternationalAnd let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.
Abdel HaleemBe a community that calls for what is good, urges what is right, and forbids what is wrong: those who do this are the successful ones.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment
Abdel HaleemDo not be like those who, after they have been given clear revelation, split into factions and fall into disputes: a terrible punishment awaits such people.
Saheeh InternationalOn the Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black, [to them it will be said], "Did you disbelieve [i.e., reject faith] after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject."
Abdel HaleemOn the Day when some faces brighten and others darken, it will be said to those with darkened faces, ‘How could you reject your faith after believing? Taste the torment for doing so,’
Saheeh InternationalBut as for those whose faces turn white, [they will be] within the mercy of Allāh. They will abide therein eternally.
Abdel Haleembut those with brightened faces will be in God’s grace, there to remain.
Saheeh InternationalThese are the verses of Allāh. We recite them to you, [O Muḥammad], in truth; and Allāh wants no injustice to the worlds [i.e., His creatures].
Abdel HaleemThese are God’s revelations: We recite them to you [Prophet] with the Truth. God does not will injustice for His creatures.
Saheeh InternationalTo Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allāh will [all] matters be returned.
Abdel HaleemEverything in the heavens and earth belongs to God; it is to Him that all things return.
Saheeh InternationalYou are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allāh. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.
Abdel Haleem[Believers], you are the best community singled out for people: you order what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in God. If the People of the Book had also believed, it would have been better for them. For although some of them do believe, most of them are lawbreakers-
Saheeh InternationalThey will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs [i.e., retreat]; then they will not be aided.
Abdel Haleemthey will not do you much harm: even if they come out to fight you, they will soon turn tail; they will get no help-
Saheeh InternationalThey have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allāh and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims]. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in [i.e., rejected] the verses of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
Abdel Haleemand, unless they hold fast to a lifeline from God and from mankind, they are overshadowed by vulnerability wherever they are found. They have drawn God’s wrath upon themselves. They are overshadowed by weakness, too, because they have persistently disbelieved in God’s revelation and killed prophets without any right, all because of their disobedience and boundless transgression.
Saheeh InternationalThey are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allāh during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].
Abdel HaleemBut they are not all alike. There are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite God’s revelations during the night, who bow down in worship,
Saheeh InternationalThey believe in Allāh and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous.
Abdel Haleemwho believe in God and the Last Day, who order what is right and forbid what is wrong, who are quick to do good deeds. These people are among the righteous
Saheeh InternationalAnd whatever good they do - never will it be denied them. And Allāh is Knowing of the righteous.
Abdel Haleemand they will not be denied [the reward] for whatever good deeds they do: God knows exactly who is conscious of Him.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
Abdel HaleemAs for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain-
Saheeh InternationalThe example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind containing frost which strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves [i.e., sinned] and destroys it. And Allāh has not wronged them, but they wrong themselves.
Abdel Haleemand whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves [i.e., believers], for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, do not take for your intimates such outsiders as spare no effort to ruin you and want to see you suffer: their hatred is evident from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our revelations clear for you; will you not use your reason?
Saheeh InternationalHere you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture - all of it. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, "Die in your rage. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts."
Abdel HaleemThis is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts.
Saheeh InternationalIf good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allāh, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allāh is encompassing of what they do.
Abdel HaleemThey grieve at any good that befalls you [believers] and rejoice at your misfortunes. But if you are steadfast and conscious of God, their scheming will not harm you in the least: God encircles everything they do.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [remember] when you, [O Muḥammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uḥud] - and Allāh is Hearing and Knowing -
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], remember when you left your home at dawn to assign battle positions to the believers: God hears and knows everything.
Saheeh InternationalWhen two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allāh was their ally; and upon Allāh the believers should rely.
Abdel HaleemRemember when two groups of you were about to lose heart and God protected them- let the believers put their trust in God-
Saheeh InternationalAnd already had Allāh given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were weak [i.e., few in number]. Then fear Allāh; perhaps you will be grateful.
Abdel HaleemGod helped you at Badr when you were very weak. Be mindful of God, so that you may be grateful.
Saheeh International[Remember] when you said to the believers, "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?
Abdel HaleemRemember when you said to the believers, ‘Will you be satisfied if your Lord reinforces you by send-ing down three thousand angels?
Saheeh InternationalYes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allāh and they [i.e., the enemy] come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction]."
Abdel HaleemWell, if you are steadfast and mindful of God, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand swooping angels if the enemy should suddenly attack you!’ and God arranged it so,
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh made it not except as [a sign of] good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And victory is not except from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise -
Abdel Haleemas a message of hope for you [believers] to put your hearts at rest- help comes only from God, the Mighty, the Wise-
Saheeh InternationalThat He might cut down a section of the disbelievers or suppress them so that they turn back disappointed.
Abdel Haleemand in order to cut off the flanks of the disbelievers’ army and frustrate them, to make them withdraw in total defeat.
Saheeh InternationalNot for you, [O Muḥammad, but for Allāh], is the decision whether He should [cut them down] or forgive them or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemWhether God relents towards them or punishes them is not for you [Prophet] to decide: they are wrongdoers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Abdel HaleemEverything in the heavens and earth belongs to God. He forgives whoever He will and punishes whoever He will: God is most forgiving and merciful.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allāh that you may be successful.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, do not consume usurious interest, doubled and redoubled. Be mindful of God so that you may prosper-
Saheeh InternationalAnd fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers.
Abdel Haleembeware of the Fire prepared for those who ignore [Him]-
Saheeh InternationalAnd obey Allāh and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.
Abdel Haleemand obey God and the Prophet so that you may be given mercy.
Saheeh InternationalAnd hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden [i.e., Paradise] as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous
Abdel HaleemHurry towards your Lord’s forgiveness and a Garden as wide as the heavens and earth prepared for the righteous,
Saheeh InternationalWho spend [in the cause of Allāh] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allāh loves the doers of good;
Abdel Haleemwho give, both in prosperity and adversity, who restrain their anger and pardon people- God loves those who do good-
Saheeh InternationalAnd those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allāh? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.
Abdel Haleemthose who remember God and implore forgiveness for their sins if they do something shameful or wrong themselves- who forgives sins but God?- and who never knowingly persist in doing wrong.
Saheeh InternationalThose - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.
Abdel HaleemThe reward for such people is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens graced with flowing streams, where they will remain. How excellent is the reward of those who labour!
Saheeh InternationalSimilar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied.
Abdel HaleemGod’s ways have operated before your time: travel through the land, and see what was the end of those who disbelieved.
Saheeh InternationalThis [Qur’ān] is a clear statement to [all] the people and a guidance and instruction for those conscious of Allāh.
Abdel HaleemThis is a clear lesson to people, and guidance and teaching for those who are mindful of God.
Saheeh InternationalSo do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
Abdel HaleemDo not lose heart or despair- if you are true believers you have the upper hand-
Saheeh InternationalIf a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allāh may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs - and Allāh does not like the wrongdoers -
Abdel Haleemif you have suffered a blow, they too have suffered one like it. We deal out such days among people in turn, for God to find out who truly believes, for Him to choose martyrs from among you- God does not love evildoers-
Saheeh InternationalAnd that Allāh may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers.
Abdel Haleemfor Him to cleanse those who believe and for Him to destroy the disbelievers.
Saheeh InternationalOr do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allāh has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?
Abdel HaleemDid you think you would enter the Garden without God first proving which of you would struggle for His cause and remain steadfast?
Saheeh InternationalAnd you had certainly wished for death [i.e., martyrdom] before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.
Abdel HaleemBefore you encountered death, you were hoping for it. Well, now you have seen it with your own eyes.
Saheeh InternationalMuḥammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allāh at all; but Allāh will reward the grateful.
Abdel HaleemMuhammad is only a messenger before whom many messengers have been and gone. If he died or was killed, would you revert to your old ways? If anyone did so, he would not harm God in the least. God will reward the grateful.
Saheeh InternationalAnd it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allāh at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And We will reward the grateful.
Abdel HaleemNo soul may die except with God’s permission at a predestined time. If anyone strives for the rewards of this world, We will give him some of them. If anyone strives for the rewards of the Hereafter, We will give him some of them: We will reward the grateful.
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a prophet [fought in battle and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allāh, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allāh loves the steadfast.
Abdel HaleemMany prophets have fought, with large bands of godly men alongside them who, in the face of their sufferings for God’s cause, did not lose heart or weaken or surrender: God loves those who are steadfast.
Saheeh InternationalAnd their words were not but that they said, "Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
Abdel HaleemAll they said was, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses. Make our feet firm, and give us help against the disbelievers,’
Saheeh InternationalSo Allāh gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allāh loves the doers of good.
Abdel Haleemand so God gave them both the rewards of this world and the excellent rewards of the Hereafter: God loves those who do good.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, if you obey the disbelievers, they will make you revert to your old ways and you will turn into losers.
Saheeh InternationalBut Allāh is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.
Abdel HaleemNo indeed! It is God who is your protector: He is the best of helpers.
Saheeh InternationalWe will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allāh of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.
Abdel HaleemWe will strike panic into the disbelievers’ hearts because they attribute partners to God although He has sent no authority for this: their shelter will be the Fire- how miserable is the home of the evildoers!
Saheeh InternationalAnd Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the believers.
Abdel HaleemGod fulfilled His promise to you: you were routing them, with His permission, but then you faltered, disputed the order, and disobeyed, once He had brought you within sight of your goal- some of you desire the gains of this world and others desire the world to come- and then He prevented you from [defeating] them as a punishment. He has now forgiven you: God is most gracious to the believers.
Saheeh International[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allāh repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.
Abdel HaleemYou fled without looking back while the Messenger was calling out to you from behind, and God rewarded you with sorrow for sorrow. [He has now forgiven you] so that you may not grieve for what you missed or for what happened to you. God is well aware of everything you do.
Saheeh InternationalThen after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allāh other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allāh." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allāh might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.
Abdel HaleemAfter sorrow, He caused calm to descend upon you, a sleep that overtook some of you. Another group, caring only for themselves, entertained false thoughts about God, thoughts more appropriate to pagan ignorance, and said, ‘Do we get a say in any of this?’ [Prophet], tell them, ‘Everything to do with this affair is in God’s hands.’ They conceal in their hearts things they will not reveal to you. They say, ‘If we had had our say in this, none of us would have been killed here.’ Tell them, ‘Even if you had resolved to stay at home, those who were destined to be killed would still have gone out to meet their deaths.’ God did this in order to test everything within you and in order to prove what is in your hearts. God knows your innermost thoughts very well.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.
Abdel HaleemAs for those of you who turned away on the day the two armies met in battle, it was Satan who caused them to slip, through some of their actions. God has now pardoned them: God is most forgiving and forbearing.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allāh makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allāh who gives life and causes death, and Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, do not be like those who disbelieved and said of their brothers who went out on a journey or a raid, ‘If only they had stayed with us they would not have died or been killed,’ for God will make such thoughts a source of anguish in their hearts. It is God who gives life and death; God sees everything you do.
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you are killed in the cause of Allāh or die - then forgiveness from Allāh and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].
Abdel HaleemWhether you are killed for God’s cause or die, God’s forgiveness and mercy are better than anything people amass.
Saheeh InternationalAnd whether you die or are killed, unto Allāh you will be gathered.
Abdel HaleemWhether you die or are killed, it is to God that you will be gathered.
Saheeh InternationalSo by mercy from Allāh, [O Muḥammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who rely [upon Him].
Abdel HaleemBy an act of mercy from God, you [Prophet] were gentle in your dealings with them- had you been harsh, or hard-hearted, they would have dispersed and left you- so pardon them and ask forgiveness for them. Consult with them about matters, then, when you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in God: God loves those who put their trust in Him.
Saheeh InternationalIf Allāh should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
Abdel HaleemIf God helps you [believers], no one can overcome you; if He forsakes you, who else can help you? Believers should put their trust in God.
Saheeh InternationalIt is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
Abdel HaleemIt is inconceivable that a prophet would ever dishonestly take something from the battle gains. Anyone who does so will carry it with him on the Day of Resurrection, when each soul will be fully repaid for what it has done: no one will be wronged.
Saheeh InternationalSo is one who pursues the pleasure of Allāh like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allāh and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination.
Abdel HaleemCan the man who pursues God’s good pleasure be like the man who has brought God’s wrath upon himself and whose home will be Hell- a foul destination?
Saheeh InternationalThey are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allāh, and Allāh is Seeing of whatever they do.
Abdel HaleemThey are in a different class in God’s eyes; God sees exactly what they do.
Saheeh InternationalCertainly did Allāh confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.
Abdel HaleemGod has been truly gracious to the believers in sending them a Messenger from among their own, to recite His revelations to them, to make them grow in purity, and to teach them the Scripture and wisdom- before that they were clearly astray.
Saheeh InternationalWhy [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uḥud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves [i.e., due to your sin]." Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
Abdel HaleemWhy do you [believers] say, when a calamity befalls you, even after you have inflicted twice as much damage [on your enemy], ‘How did this happen?’? [Prophet], say, ‘You brought it upon yourselves.’ God has power over everything:
Saheeh InternationalAnd what struck you on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] was by permission of Allāh that He might make evident the [true] believers
Abdel Haleemwhat befell you on the day the two armies met in battle happened with God’s permission and in order for Him to see who were the true believers and who were the hypocrites who,
Saheeh InternationalAnd that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allāh or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] battle, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allāh is most knowing of what they conceal -
Abdel Haleemwhen it was said to them, ‘Come, fight for God’s cause, or at least defend yourselves,’ answered, ‘We would follow you if we knew there was going to be fighting.’ On that day they were closer to disbelief than belief. They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts: God knows exactly what they conceal.
Saheeh InternationalThose who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."
Abdel HaleemAs for those who stayed behind, and said of their brothers, ‘If only they had listened to us, they would not have been killed,’ tell them [Prophet], ‘Ward off death from yourselves, if what you say is true.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do not think of those who have been killed in God’s way as dead. They are alive with their Lord, well provided for,
Saheeh InternationalRejoicing in what Allāh has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
Abdel Haleemhappy with what God has given them of His favour; rejoicing that for those they have left behind who have yet to join them there is no fear, nor will they grieve;
Saheeh InternationalThey receive good tidings of favor from Allāh and bounty and [of the fact] that Allāh does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -
Abdel Haleem[rejoicing] in God’s blessing and favour, and that God will not let the reward of the believers be lost.
Saheeh InternationalThose [believers] who responded to Allāh and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allāh is a great reward -
Abdel HaleemThose who responded to God and the Messenger after suffering defeat, who do good and remain conscious of God, will have a great reward.
Saheeh InternationalThose to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
Abdel HaleemThose whose faith only increased when people said, ‘Fear your enemy: they have amassed a great army against you,’ and who replied, ‘God is enough for us: He is the best protector,’
Saheeh InternationalSo they returned with favor from Allāh and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allāh, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
Abdel Haleemreturned with grace and bounty from God; no harm befell them. They pursued God’s good pleasure. God’s favour is great indeed.
Saheeh InternationalThat is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.
Abdel HaleemIt is Satan who urges you to fear his followers; do not fear them, but fear Me, if you are true believers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd do not be grieved, [O Muḥammad], by those who hasten into disbelief. Indeed, they will never harm Allāh at all. Allāh intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment.
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do not be grieved by those who are quick to disbelieve. They will not harm God in the least; it is God’s will that they will have no share in the Hereafter- a terrible torment awaits them.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith - never will they harm Allāh at all, and for them is a painful punishment.
Abdel HaleemThose who sell their faith for disbelief will not harm God in any way; agonizing torment awaits them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
Abdel HaleemThe disbelievers should not think that it is better for them that We give them more time: when We give them more time they become more sinful- a shameful torment awaits them.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allāh reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allāh chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allāh and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.
Abdel HaleemNor was it God’s aim to leave you as you were, with no separation between the bad and the good. God would not show you [people] what is hidden; God chooses as His messengers whoever He will. So believe in God and His messengers: if you believe and stay mindful of God, you will have a great reward.
Saheeh InternationalAnd let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allāh has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allāh belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.
Abdel HaleemThose who are miserly with what God has granted them out of His grace should not think that it is good for them; on the contrary, it is bad for them. Whatever they meanly withhold will be hung around their necks on the Day of Resurrection. It is God who will inherit the heavens and earth: God is well aware of everything you do.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh has certainly heard the statement of those [Jews] who said, "Indeed, Allāh is poor, while we are rich." We will record what they said and their killing of the prophets without right and will say, "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
Abdel HaleemGod has certainly heard the words of those who sneer, ‘So God is poor, while we are rich’. We shall record everything they say––as well as their killing of prophets in defiance of all that is right- and We shall say to them, ‘Taste the torment of the scorching fire.
Saheeh InternationalThat is for what your hands have put forth and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."
Abdel HaleemThat is on account of what you stored up for yourselves with your own hands: God is never unjust to His servants.’
Saheeh International[They are] those who said, "Indeed, Allāh has taken our promise not to believe any messenger until he brings us an offering which fire [from heaven] will consume." Say, "There have already come to you messengers before me with clear proofs and [even] that of which you speak. So why did you kill them, if you should be truthful?"
Abdel HaleemTo those who say, ‘God has commanded us not to believe in any messenger unless he brings us an offering that fire [from heaven] consumes,’ say [Prophet], ‘Messengers before me have come to you with clear signs, including the one you mention. If you are sincere, why did you kill them?’
Saheeh InternationalThen if they deny you, [O Muḥammad] - so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture.
Abdel HaleemIf they reject you, so have other messengers been rejected before you, even though they came with clear evidence, books of wisdom and enlightening scripture.
Saheeh InternationalEvery soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
Abdel HaleemEvery soul will taste death and you will be paid in full only on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have triumphed. The present world is only an illusory pleasure:
Saheeh InternationalYou will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allāh much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allāh - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of resolve.
Abdel Haleemyou are sure to be tested through your possessions and persons; you are sure to hear much that is hurtful from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with God. If you are steadfast and mindful of God, that is the best course.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [mention, O Muḥammad], when Allāh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear [i.e., explain it] to the people and not conceal it." But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased.
Abdel HaleemGod took a pledge from those who were given the Scripture- ‘Make it known to people; do not conceal it’- but they tossed the pledge over their shoulders, they bartered it for a small price: what a bad bargain they made!
Saheeh InternationalAnd never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.
Abdel HaleemDo not think [Prophet] that those who exult in what they have done and seek praise for things they have not done will escape the torment; agonizing torment awaits them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allāh is over all things competent.
Abdel HaleemControl of the heavens and earth belongs to God; God has power over everything.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding -
Abdel HaleemThere truly are signs in the creation of the heavens and earth, and in the alternation of night and day, for those with understanding,
Saheeh InternationalWho remember Allāh while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Abdel Haleemwho remember God standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth: ‘Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose- You are far above that!- so protect us from the torment of the Fire.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
Abdel HaleemOur Lord! You will truly humiliate those You commit to the Fire. The evildoers have no one to help them.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, indeed we have heard a caller [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.
Abdel HaleemOur Lord! We have heard someone calling us to faith- “ Believe in your Lord”- and we have believed. Our Lord! Forgive us our sins, wipe out our bad deeds, and grant that we join the righteous when we die.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."
Abdel HaleemOur Lord! Bestow upon us all that You have promised us through Your messengers- do not humiliate us on the Day of Resurrection- You never break Your promise.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allāh, and Allāh has with Him the best reward."
Abdel HaleemTheir Lord has answered them: ‘I will not allow the deeds of any one of you to be lost, whether you are male or female, each is like the other [in rewards]. I will certainly wipe out the bad deeds of those who emigrated and were driven out of their homes, who suffered harm for My cause, who fought and were killed. I will certainly admit them to Gardens graced with flowing streams, as a reward from God: the best reward is with God.’
Saheeh InternationalBe not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.
Abdel Haleem[Prophet], do not be deceived by the disbelievers’ [lucrative] trading to and fro in the land:
Saheeh International[It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.
Abdel Haleemthis is only a brief enjoyment, after which Hell will be their home- a miserable resting place!
Saheeh InternationalBut those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allāh. And that which is with Allāh is best for the righteous.
Abdel HaleemBut those who were mindful of their Lord will have Gardens graced with flowing streams where they will stay as a reward from God. What God has is best for those who are truly good.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allāh and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allāh. They do not exchange the verses of Allāh for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.
Abdel HaleemSome of the People of the Book believe in God, in what has been sent down to you and in what was sent down to them: humbling themselves before God, they would never sell God’s revelation for a small price. These people will have their rewards with their Lord: God is swift in reckoning.
Saheeh InternationalO you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allāh that you may be successful.
Abdel HaleemYou who believe, be steadfast, more steadfast than others; be ready; always be mindful of God, so that you may prosper.
