Saheeh InternationalCertainly will the believers have succeeded:
Abdel Haleem[How] prosperous are the believers!

Surah 23 · Makki · 118 ayat
The Believers
Saheeh InternationalCertainly will the believers have succeeded:
Abdel Haleem[How] prosperous are the believers!
Saheeh InternationalThey who are during their prayer humbly intent
Abdel HaleemThose who pray humbly,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who turn away from ill speech
Abdel Haleemwho shun idle talk,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who are observant of zakāh
Abdel Haleemwho pay the prescribed alms,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who guard their private parts
Abdel Haleemwho guard their chastity
Saheeh InternationalExcept from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed -
Abdel Haleemexcept with their spouses or their slaves––with these they are not to blame,
Saheeh InternationalBut whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -
Abdel Haleembut anyone who seeks more than this is exceeding the limits––
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
Abdel Haleemwho are faithful to their trusts and pledges
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who carefully maintain their prayers -
Abdel Haleemand who keep up their prayers,
Saheeh InternationalThose are the inheritors
Abdel Haleemwill rightly be given
Saheeh InternationalWho will inherit al-Firdaus. They will abide therein eternally.
Abdel HaleemParadise as their own, there to remain.
Saheeh InternationalAnd certainly did We create man from an extract of clay.
Abdel HaleemWe created man from an essence of clay,
Saheeh InternationalThen We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb].
Abdel Haleemthen We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place,
Saheeh InternationalThen We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allāh, the best of creators.
Abdel Haleemthen We made that drop into a clinging form, and We made that form into a lump of flesh, and We made that lump into bones, and We clothed those bones with flesh, and later We made him into other forms––glory be to God, the best of creators!––
Saheeh InternationalThen indeed, after that you are to die.
Abdel Haleemthen you will die
Saheeh InternationalThen indeed you, on the Day of Resurrection, will be resurrected.
Abdel Haleemand then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be raised up again.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
Abdel HaleemWe created seven levels above you: We are never unmindful of Our creation.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are Able to take it away.
Abdel HaleemWe sent water down from the sky in due measure and lodged it in the earth––We have the power to take it all away if We so wish––
Saheeh InternationalAnd We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.
Abdel Haleemwith it We produced for you gardens of date palms and vines, with many fruits there for you to eat,
Saheeh InternationalAnd [We brought forth] a tree issuing from Mount Sinai which produces oil and food [i.e., olives] for those who eat.
Abdel Haleemand a tree, growing out of Mount Sinai, that produces oil and seasoning for your food.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, for you in livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from that which is in their bellies, and for you in them are numerous benefits, and from them you eat.
Abdel HaleemThere is a lesson for you in livestock: We produce milk for you to drink from their bellies. And they have many other benefits: you eat them
Saheeh InternationalAnd upon them and on ships you are carried.
Abdel Haleemand you ride on them, as you do in ships.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"
Abdel HaleemWe sent Noah to his people. He said, ‘My people, serve God, for He is your only god. Will you not heed Him?’
Saheeh InternationalBut the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allāh had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
Abdel HaleemBut the leading disbelievers among his people said, ‘He is merely a mortal like you, trying to gain some superiority over you. God would have sent down angels if He had wished; besides, we never heard of anything like this from our forefathers.
Saheeh InternationalHe is not but a man possessed with madness, so wait concerning him for a time."
Abdel HaleemHe is just a madman, so let’s wait and see what happens to him.’
Saheeh International[Noah] said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."
Abdel HaleemNoah said, ‘My Lord, help me! They call me a liar,’
Saheeh InternationalSo We inspired to him, "Construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows, put into it [i.e., the ship] from each [creature] two mates and your family, except him for whom the decree [of destruction] has proceeded. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.
Abdel Haleemand so We revealed to him: ‘Build the Ark under Our watchful eye and according to Our revelation. When Our command comes and water gushes up out of the earth, take pairs of every species on board, and your family, except for those on whom the sentence has already been passed- do not plead with me for the evildoers: they will be drowned-
Saheeh InternationalAnd when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, 'Praise to Allāh who has saved us from the wrongdoing people.'
Abdel Haleemand when you and your companions are settled on the Ark, say, “Praise be to God, who delivered us from the wicked people,”
Saheeh InternationalAnd say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].'"
Abdel Haleemand say, “My Lord, let me land with Your blessing: it is You who provide the best landings”.’
Saheeh InternationalIndeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants].
Abdel HaleemThere are signs in all this: We have always put [people] to the test.
Saheeh InternationalThen We produced after them a generation of others.
Abdel HaleemThen We raised another generation after them,
Saheeh InternationalAnd We sent among them a messenger from themselves, [saying], "Worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?"
Abdel Haleemand sent one of their own as a messenger: ‘Serve God, for He is your only god. Will you not heed Him?’
Saheeh InternationalAnd the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.
Abdel HaleemBut the leading disbelievers among his people, who denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, to whom We had granted ease and plenty in this life, said, ‘He is just a mortal like you- he eats what you eat and drinks what you drink-
Saheeh InternationalAnd if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.
Abdel Haleemand you will really be losers if you obey a mortal like yourselves.
Saheeh InternationalDoes he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you will be brought forth [once more]?
Abdel HaleemHow can he promise you that after you die and become dust and bones you will be brought out alive?
Saheeh InternationalHow far, how far, is that which you are promised.
Abdel HaleemWhat you are promised is very farfetched.
Saheeh InternationalIt [i.e., life] is not but our worldly life - we die and live, but we will not be resurrected.
Abdel HaleemThere is only the life of this world: we die, we live, but we will never be resurrected.
Saheeh InternationalHe is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allāh, and we will not believe him."
Abdel HaleemHe is just a man making lies up about God. We will never believe in him.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me."
Abdel HaleemThe prophet said, ‘My Lord, help me! They call me a liar,’
Saheeh International[Allāh] said, "After a little, they will surely become regretful."
Abdel Haleemand so God said, ‘Soon they will be filled with regret.’
Saheeh InternationalSo the shriek seized them in truth, and We made them as [plant] stubble. Then away with the wrongdoing people.
Abdel HaleemThe blast justly struck them and We swept them away like scum. Away with the evildoers!
Saheeh InternationalThen We produced after them other generations.
Abdel HaleemWe raised other generations after them-
Saheeh InternationalNo nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter].
Abdel Haleemno community can advance or delay its time-
Saheeh InternationalThen We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time there came to a nation its messenger, they denied him, so We made them follow one another [to destruction], and We made them narrations. So away with a people who do not believe.
Abdel Haleemand We sent Our messengers in succession: whenever a messenger came to a community they invariably called him a liar, so We destroyed them one after the other and made them into cautionary tales. Away with the disbelievers!
Saheeh InternationalThen We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority
Abdel HaleemThen We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our signs and clear authority,
Saheeh InternationalTo Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.
Abdel Haleemto Pharaoh and his prominent leaders, but they responded with arrogance: they were a haughty people.
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?"
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘Are we to believe in two mortals like us? And their people are our servants?’
Saheeh InternationalSo they denied them and were of those destroyed.
Abdel Haleemand so they called them both liars: they became another ruined people.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided.
Abdel HaleemWe gave Moses the Scripture, so that they might be rightly guided.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.
Abdel HaleemWe made the son of Mary and his mother a sign; We gave them shelter on a peaceful hillside with flowing water.
Saheeh International[Allāh said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed I, of what you do, am Knowing.
Abdel HaleemMessengers, eat good things and do good deeds: I am well aware of what you do.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so fear Me."
Abdel HaleemThis community of yours is one- and I am your Lord: be mindful of Me-
Saheeh InternationalBut they [i.e., the people] divided their religion among them into portions [i.e., sects] - each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.
Abdel Haleembut they have split their community into sects, each rejoicing in their own.
Saheeh InternationalSo leave them in their confusion for a time.
Abdel HaleemSo [Muhammad] leave them for a while steeped [in their ignorance].
Saheeh InternationalDo they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children
Abdel HaleemDo they reckon that, by giving them wealth and sons,
Saheeh InternationalIs [because] We hasten for them good things? Rather, they do not perceive.
Abdel HaleemWe race to give them good things? They really have no idea!
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, they who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord
Abdel HaleemThose who stand in awe of their Lord,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who believe in the signs of their Lord
Abdel Haleemwho believe in His messages,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who do not associate anything with their Lord
Abdel Haleemwho do not ascribe partners to Him,
Saheeh InternationalAnd they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord -
Abdel Haleemwho always give with hearts that tremble at the thought that they must return to Him,
Saheeh InternationalIt is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein.
Abdel Haleemare the ones who race toward good things, and they will be the first to get them.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
Abdel HaleemWe do not burden any soul with more than it can bear- We have a Record that tells the truth- they will not be wronged.
Saheeh InternationalBut their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides that [i.e., disbelief] which they are doing,
Abdel HaleemBut the disbelievers’ hearts are steeped [in ignorance of ] all this; and there are other things besides this that they do.
Saheeh InternationalUntil when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allāh] for help.
Abdel HaleemWhen We bring Our punishment on those corrupted with wealth, they will cry for help:
Saheeh InternationalDo not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped.
Abdel Haleem‘Do not cry out today: you will get no help from Us.
Saheeh InternationalMy verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels.
Abdel HaleemTime and time again My messages were recited to you, but you turned arrogantly on your heels,
Saheeh InternationalIn arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil.
Abdel Haleemand spent the evening making fun of [the Quran].’
Saheeh InternationalThen have they not reflected over the word [i.e., the Qur’ān], or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?
Abdel HaleemHave they not contemplated the Word of God? Has something come to them that did not come to their forefathers?
Saheeh InternationalOr did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging?
Abdel HaleemDo they not recognize their Messenger? So why do they reject him?
Saheeh InternationalOr do they say, "In him is madness"? Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse.
Abdel HaleemWhy do they say he is possessed? He has brought them the truth and most of them hate it,
Saheeh InternationalBut if the Truth [i.e., Allāh] had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.
Abdel Haleembut if the truth were in accordance with their desires, the heavens, the earth, and everyone in them would disintegrate. We have brought them their Reminder and they turn away from it.
Saheeh InternationalOr do you, [O Muḥammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.
Abdel HaleemDo you [Prophet] ask them for any payment? Your Lord’s is the best payment: He is the Best of Providers.
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, you invite them to a straight path.
Abdel HaleemYou call them to a straight path
Saheeh InternationalBut indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.
Abdel Haleemand those who do not believe in the Hereafter turn away from that path.
Saheeh InternationalAnd even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
Abdel HaleemEven if We were to show them mercy and relieve them of distress, they would blindly persist in their transgression.
Saheeh InternationalAnd We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus]
Abdel HaleemWe have already afflicted them, yet they did not submit to their Lord: they will not humble themselves
Saheeh InternationalUntil when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
Abdel Haleemuntil We open a gate to severe torment for them- then they will be plunged into utter despair.
Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.
Abdel HaleemIt is God who endowed you with hearing, sight, and hearts- how seldom you are grateful!
Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.
Abdel HaleemIt is He who made you multiply on earth. It is to Him that you will be gathered:
Saheeh InternationalAnd it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?
Abdel Haleemit is He who gives life and death; the alternation of night and day depends on Him; will you not use your minds?
Saheeh InternationalRather, they say like what the former peoples said.
Abdel HaleemBut, like others before them,
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
Abdel Haleemthey say, ‘What? When we die and turn to dust and bones, shall we really be resurrected?
Saheeh InternationalWe have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."
Abdel HaleemWe have heard such promises before, and so did our forefathers. These are just ancient fables.’
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?"
Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘Who owns the earth and all who live in it, if you know [so much]?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "To Allāh." Say, "Then will you not remember?"
Abdel Haleemand they will reply, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Will you not take heed?’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Who is the Lord of the seven heavens? Who is the Lord of the Mighty Throne?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "[They belong] to Allāh." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?"
Abdel Haleemand they will reply, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Will you not be mindful?’
Saheeh InternationalSay, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?"
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Who holds control of everything in His hand? Who protects, while there is no protection against Him, if you know [so much]?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "[All belongs] to Allāh." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"
Abdel Haleemand they will reply, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Then how can you be so deluded?’
Saheeh InternationalRather, We have brought them the truth, and indeed they are liars.
Abdel HaleemThe fact is, We brought them the truth and they are lying.
Saheeh InternationalAllāh has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have [sought to] overcome others. Exalted is Allāh above what they describe [concerning Him].
Abdel HaleemGod has never had a child. Nor is there any god beside Him- if there were, each god would have taken his creation aside and tried to overcome the others. May God be exalted above what they describe!
Saheeh International[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him].
Abdel HaleemHe knows what is not seen as well as what is seen; He is far above any partner they claim for Him.
Saheeh InternationalSay, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised,
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘Lord, if You are going to show me the punishment You have promised them,
Saheeh InternationalMy Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people."
Abdel Haleemthen Lord, do not include me among the evildoers!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd indeed, We are Able to show you what We have promised them.
Abdel HaleemWe certainly are able to show you the punishment We have promised them.
Saheeh InternationalRepel, by [means of] what is best, [their] evil. We are most knowing of what they describe.
Abdel HaleemRepel evil with good- We are well aware of what they attribute to Us-
Saheeh InternationalAnd say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
Abdel Haleemand say, ‘Lord, I take refuge with You from the goadings of the evil ones;
Saheeh InternationalAnd I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."
Abdel HaleemI seek refuge with you, Lord, so that they may not come near me.’
Saheeh International[For such is the state of the disbelievers] until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "My Lord, send me back
Abdel HaleemWhen death comes to one of them, he cries, ‘My Lord, let me return
Saheeh InternationalThat I might do righteousness in that which I left behind." No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected.
Abdel Haleemso as to make amends for the things I neglected.’ Never! This will not go beyond his words: a barrier stands behind such people until the very Day they are resurrected.
Saheeh InternationalSo when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.
Abdel HaleemOn that Day when the Trumpet is blown, the ties between them will be as nothing and they will not ask about each other:
Saheeh InternationalAnd those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful.
Abdel Haleemthose whose good deeds weigh heavy will be successful,
Saheeh InternationalBut those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.
Abdel Haleembut those whose balance is light will have lost their souls for ever and will stay in Hell-
Saheeh InternationalThe Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles.
Abdel Haleemthe Fire will scorch their faces and their lips will be twisted in pain.
Saheeh International[It will be said], "Were not My verses recited to you and you used to deny them?"
Abdel Haleem‘Were My messages not recited over and over to you and still you rejected them?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us, and we were a people astray.
Abdel HaleemThey will say, ‘Lord, our waywardness overcame us and we went astray.
Saheeh InternationalOur Lord, remove us from it, and if we were to return [to evil], we would indeed be wrongdoers."
Abdel HaleemLord, take us away from this and if we go back to our old ways, then we shall really be evildoers.’
Saheeh InternationalHe will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me.
Abdel HaleemHe will say, ‘Away with you! In you go! Do not speak to Me!
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, there was a party of My servants who said, 'Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, and You are the best of the merciful.'
Abdel HaleemAmong My servants there were those who said, “Lord, We believe. Forgive us and have mercy on us: You are the most merciful of all.”
Saheeh InternationalBut you took them in mockery to the point that they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
Abdel HaleemBut you kept on laughing at them: so intent were you on laughing at them that it made you forget My warning.
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance - that they are the attainers [of success]."
Abdel HaleemToday I have rewarded them for their patience: it is they who will succeed.’
Saheeh International[Allāh] will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?"
Abdel HaleemHe will say, ‘How many years were you on earth?’
Saheeh InternationalThey will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate."
Abdel Haleemand they will reply, ‘We stayed a day or a part of a day, but ask those who keep count.’
Saheeh InternationalHe will say, "You stayed not but a little - if only you had known.
Abdel HaleemHe will say, ‘You stayed but a little, if you had only known.
Saheeh InternationalThen did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"
Abdel HaleemDid you think We had created you in vain, and that you would not be brought back to Us?’
Saheeh InternationalSo exalted is Allāh, the Sovereign, the Truth; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.
Abdel HaleemExalted be God, the true King, there is no god but Him, the Lord of the Glorious Throne!
Saheeh InternationalAnd whoever invokes besides Allāh another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
Abdel HaleemWhoever prays to another god alongside Him- a god for whose existence he has no evidence- will face his reckoning with his Lord. Those who reject the truth will not prosper.
Saheeh InternationalAnd, [O Muḥammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful."
Abdel HaleemSay [Prophet], ‘Lord, forgive and have mercy: You are the most merciful of all.’
