Surah 12 · Makki · 111 ayat
Joseph
Saheeh InternationalAlif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the clear Book.
Abdel HaleemAlif Lam Ra These are the verses of the Scripture that makes things clear––
Saheeh InternationalIndeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.
Abdel HaleemWe have sent it down as an Arabic Quran so that you [people] may understand.
Saheeh InternationalWe relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.
Abdel HaleemWe tell you [Prophet] the best of stories in revealing this Quran to you. Before this you were one of those who knew nothing about them.
Saheeh International[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."
Abdel HaleemJoseph said to his father, ‘Father, I dreamed of eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them all bow down before me,’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy.
Abdel Haleemand he replied, ‘My son, tell your brothers nothing of this dream, or they may plot to harm you––Satan is man’s sworn enemy.
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."
Abdel HaleemThis is about how your Lord will choose you, teach you to interpret dreams, and perfect His blessing on you and the House of Jacob, just as He perfected it earlier on your forefathers Abraham and Isaac: your Lord is all knowing and wise.’
Saheeh InternationalCertainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, [such as]
Abdel HaleemThere are lessons in the story of Joseph and his brothers for all who seek them.
Saheeh InternationalWhen they said, "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error.
Abdel HaleemThe brothers said [to each other], ‘Although we are many, Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are–– our father is clearly in the wrong.’
Saheeh InternationalKill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance [i.e., attention] of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."
Abdel Haleem[One of them said], ‘Kill Joseph or banish him to another land, and your father’s attention will be free to turn to you. After that you can be righteous.’
Saheeh InternationalSaid a speaker among them, "Do not kill Joseph but throw him into the bottom of the well; some travelers will pick him up - if you would do [something]."
Abdel Haleem[Another of them] said, ‘Do not kill Joseph, but, if you must, throw him into the hidden depths of a well where some caravan may pick him up.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "O our father, why do you not entrust us with Joseph while indeed, we are to him sincere counselors?
Abdel HaleemThey said to their father, ‘Why do you not trust us with Joseph? We wish him well.
Saheeh InternationalSend him with us tomorrow that he may eat well and play. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
Abdel HaleemSend him with us tomorrow and he will enjoy himself and play- we will take good care of him.’
Saheeh International[Jacob] said, "Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are of him unaware."
Abdel HaleemHe replied, ‘The thought of you taking him away with you worries me: I am afraid a wolf may eat him when you are not paying attention.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘If a wolf were to eat him when there are so many of us, we would truly be losers!’
Saheeh InternationalSo when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."
Abdel HaleemThen they took him away with them, resolved upon throwing him into the hidden depths of a well- We inspired him, saying, ‘You will tell them of all this [at a time] when they do not realize [who you are]!’-
Saheeh InternationalAnd they came to their father at night, weeping.
Abdel Haleemand at nightfall they returned to their father weeping.
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘We went off racing one another, leaving Joseph behind with our things, and a wolf ate him. You will not believe us, though we are telling the truth!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allāh is the one sought for help against that which you describe."
Abdel Haleemand they showed him his shirt, deceptively stained with blood. He cried, ‘No! Your souls have prompted you to do wrong! But it is best to be patient: from God alone I seek help to bear what you are saying.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd there came a company of travelers; then they sent their water drawer, and he let down his bucket. He said, "Good news! Here is a boy." And they concealed him, [taking him] as merchandise; and Allāh was Knowing of what they did.
Abdel HaleemSome travellers came by. They sent someone to draw water and he let down his bucket. ‘Good news!’ he exclaimed. ‘Here is a boy!’ They hid him like a piece of merchandise- God was well aware of what they did-
Saheeh InternationalAnd they sold him for a reduced price - a few dirhams - and they were, concerning him, of those content with little.
Abdel Haleemand then sold him for a small price, for a few pieces of silver: so little did they value him.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the one from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, "Make his residence comfortable. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will adopt him as a son." And thus, We established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events [i.e., dreams]. And Allāh is predominant over His affair, but most of the people do not know.
Abdel HaleemThe Egyptian who bought him said to his wife, ‘Look after him well! He may be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son.’ In this way We settled Joseph in that land and later taught him how to interpret dreams: God always prevails in His purpose, though most people do not realize it.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good.
Abdel HaleemWhen he reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge: this is how We reward those who do good.
Saheeh InternationalAnd she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."
Abdel HaleemThe woman in whose house he was living tried to seduce him: she bolted the doors and said, ‘Come to me,’ and he replied, ‘God forbid! My master has been good to me; wrongdoers never prosper.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof [i.e., sign] of his Lord. And thus [it was] that We should avert from him evil and immorality. Indeed, he was of Our chosen servants.
Abdel HaleemShe made for him, and he would have succumbed to her if he had not seen evidence of his Lord- We did this in order to keep evil and indecency away from him, for he was truly one of Our chosen servants.
Saheeh InternationalAnd they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back, and they found her husband at the door. She said, "What is the recompense of one who intended evil for your wife but that he be imprisoned or a painful punishment?"
Abdel HaleemThey raced for the door- she tore his shirt from behind- and at the door they met her husband. She said, ‘What, other than prison or painful punishment, should be the reward of someone who tried to dishonour your wife?’
Saheeh International[Joseph] said, "It was she who sought to seduce me." And a witness from her family testified, "If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is of the liars.
Abdel Haleembut he said, ‘She tried to seduce me.’ A member of her household suggested, ‘If his shirt is torn at the front, then it is she who is telling the truth and he who is lying,
Saheeh InternationalBut if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."
Abdel Haleembut if it is torn at the back, then she is lying and he is telling the truth.’
Saheeh InternationalSo when he [i.e., her husband] saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of your [i.e., women's] plan. Indeed, your plan is great [i.e., vehement].
Abdel HaleemWhen the husband saw that the shirt was torn at the back, he said, ‘This is another instance of women’s treachery: your treachery is truly great.
Saheeh InternationalJoseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
Abdel HaleemJoseph, overlook this; but you [wife], ask forgiveness for your sin- you have done wrong.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd women in the city said, "The wife of al-ʿAzeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."
Abdel HaleemSome women of the city said, ‘The governor’s wife is trying to seduce her slave! Love for him consumes her heart! It is clear to us that she has gone astray.’
Saheeh InternationalSo when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allāh! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."
Abdel HaleemWhen she heard their malicious talk, she prepared a banquet and sent for them, giving each of them a knife. She said to Joseph, ‘Come out and show yourself to them!’ and when the women saw him, they were stunned by his beauty, and cut their hands, exclaiming, ‘Great God! He cannot be mortal! He must be a precious angel!’
Saheeh InternationalShe said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."
Abdel HaleemShe said, ‘This is the one you blamed me for. I tried to seduce him and he wanted to remain chaste, but if he does not do what I command now, he will be put in prison and degraded.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."
Abdel HaleemJoseph said, ‘My Lord! I would prefer prison to what these women are calling me to do. If You do not protect me from their treachery, I shall yield to them and do wrong,’
Saheeh InternationalSo his Lord responded to him and averted from him their plan. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Abdel Haleemand his Lord answered his prayer and protected him from their treachery- He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.
Saheeh InternationalThen it appeared to them after they had seen the signs that he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] should surely imprison him for a time.
Abdel HaleemIn the end they thought it best, after seeing all the signs of his innocence, that they should imprison him for a while.
Saheeh InternationalAnd there entered the prison with him two young men. One of them said, "Indeed, I have seen myself [in a dream] pressing [grapes for] wine." The other said, "Indeed, I have seen myself carrying upon my head [some] bread, from which the birds were eating. Inform us of its interpretation; indeed, we see you to be of those who do good."
Abdel HaleemTwo young men went into prison alongside him. One of them said, ‘I dreamed that I was pressing grapes’; the other said, ‘I dreamed that I was carrying bread on my head and that the birds were eating it.’ [They said], ‘Tell us what this means- we can see that you are a knowledgeable man.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘I can tell you what this means before any meal arrives: this is part of what my Lord has taught me. I reject the faith of those who disbelieve in God and deny the life to come,
Saheeh InternationalAnd I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allāh. That is from the favor of Allāh upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
Abdel Haleemand I follow the faith of my forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Because of God’s grace to us and to all mankind, we would never worship anything beside God, but most people are ungrateful.
Saheeh InternationalO [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allāh, the One, the Prevailing?
Abdel HaleemFellow prisoners, would many diverse gods be better than God the One, the All Powerful? [No indeed!]
Saheeh InternationalYou worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allāh has sent down no evidence. Legislation is not but for Allāh. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
Abdel HaleemAll those you worship instead of Him are mere names you and your forefathers have invented, names for which God has sent down no sanction. Authority belongs to God alone, and He orders you to worship none but Him: this is the true faith, though most people do not realize it.
Saheeh InternationalO two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."
Abdel HaleemFellow prisoners, one of you will serve his master with wine; the other will be crucified and the birds will peck at his head. That is the end of the matter on which you asked my opinion.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and he [i.e., Joseph] remained in prison several years.
Abdel HaleemJoseph said to the one he knew would be saved, ‘Mention me to your master,’ but Satan made him forget to do this, and so Joseph remained in prison for a number of years.
Saheeh InternationalAnd [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."
Abdel HaleemThe king said, ‘I dreamed about seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones; seven green ears of corn and [seven] others withered. Counsellors, if you can interpret dreams, tell me the meaning of my dream.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘These are confusing dreams and we are not skilled at dream-interpretation,’
Saheeh InternationalBut the one who was freed and remembered after a time said, "I will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."
Abdel Haleembut the prisoner who had been freed at last remembered [Joseph] and said, ‘I shall tell you what this means. Give me leave to go.’
Saheeh International[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people [i.e., the king and his court]; perhaps they will know [about you]."
Abdel Haleem‘Truthful Joseph! Tell us the meaning of seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, seven green ears of corn and [seven] others withered,
Saheeh International[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.
Abdel Haleemthen I can return to the people to inform them.’ Joseph said, ‘You will sow for seven consecutive years as usual. Store all that you reap, left in the ear, apart from the little you eat.
Saheeh InternationalThen will come after that seven difficult [years] which will consume what you advanced [i.e., saved] for them, except a little from which you will store.
Abdel HaleemAfter that will come seven years of hardship which will consume all but a little of what you stored up for them;
Saheeh InternationalThen will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and in which they will press [olives and grapes]."
Abdel Haleemafter that will come a year when the people will have abundant rain and will press grapes.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd the king said, "Bring him to me." But when the messenger came to him, [Joseph] said, "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord is Knowing of their plan."
Abdel HaleemThe king said, ‘Bring him to me,’ but when the messenger came to fetch Joseph, he said, ‘Go back to your master and ask him about what happened to those women who cut their hands- my Lord knows all about their treachery.’
Saheeh InternationalSaid [the king to the women], "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph?" They said, "Perfect is Allāh! We know about him no evil." The wife of al-ʿAzeez said, "Now the truth has become evident. It was I who sought to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful.
Abdel HaleemThe king asked the women, ‘What happened when you tried to seduce Joseph?’ They said, ‘God forbid! We know nothing bad of him!’ and the governor’s wife said, ‘Now the truth is out: it was I who tried to seduce him- he is an honest man.’
Saheeh InternationalThat is so he [i.e., al-ʿAzeez] will know that I did not betray him in [his] absence and that Allāh does not guide the plan of betrayers.
Abdel Haleem[Joseph said, ‘This was] for my master to know that I did not betray him behind his back: God does not guide the mischief of the treacherous.
Saheeh InternationalAnd I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
Abdel HaleemI do not pretend to be blameless, for man’s very soul incites him to evil unless my Lord shows mercy: He is most forgiving, most merciful.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd the king said, "Bring him to me; I will appoint him exclusively for myself." And when he spoke to him, he said, "Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted."
Abdel HaleemThe king said, ‘Bring him to me: I will have him serve me personally,’ and then, once he had spoken with him, ‘From now on you will have our trust and favour.’
Saheeh International[Joseph] said, "Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I will be a knowing guardian."
Abdel HaleemJoseph said, ‘Put me in charge of the nation’s storehouses: I shall manage them prudently and carefully.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd thus We established Joseph in the land to settle therein wherever he willed. We touch with Our mercy whom We will, and We do not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
Abdel HaleemIn this way We settled Joseph in that land to live wherever he wished: We grant Our mercy to whoever We will and do not fail to reward those who do good.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believed and were fearing Allāh.
Abdel HaleemThe reward of the Hereafter is best for those who believe and are mindful of God.
Saheeh InternationalAnd the brothers of Joseph came [seeking food], and they entered upon him; and he recognized them, but he was to them unknown.
Abdel HaleemJoseph’s brothers came and presented themselves before him. He recognized them- though they did not recognize him-
Saheeh InternationalAnd when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?
Abdel Haleemand once he had given them their provisions, he said, ‘Bring me the brother [you left with] your father! Have you not seen me giving generous measure and being the best of hosts?
Saheeh InternationalBut if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."
Abdel HaleemYou will have no more corn from me if you do not bring him to me, and you will not be permitted to approach me.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We will attempt to dissuade his father from [keeping] him, and indeed, we will do [it]."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘We shall do all we can to persuade his father to send him with us, indeed we shall.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd [Joseph] said to his servants, "Put their merchandise into their saddlebags so they might recognize it when they have gone back to their people that perhaps they will [again] return."
Abdel HaleemJoseph said to his servants, ‘Put their [traded] goods back into their saddlebags, so that they may recognize them when they go back to their family, and [be eager to] return.’
Saheeh InternationalSo when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
Abdel HaleemWhen they returned to their father, they said, ‘Father, we have been denied any more corn, but send our brother back with us and we shall be given another measure. We shall guard him carefully.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allāh is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘Am I to entrust him to you as I did his brother before? God is the best guardian and the Most Merciful of the merciful.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies [i.e., food] for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."
Abdel HaleemThen, when they opened their packs, they discovered that their goods had been returned to them and they said, ‘Father! We need no more [goods to barter]: look, our goods have been returned to us. We shall get corn for our household; we shall keep our brother safe; we shall be entitled to another camel-load of grain- an extra measure so easily achieved!’
Saheeh International[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise [i.e., oath] by Allāh that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded [i.e., overcome by enemies]." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allāh, over what we say, is Entrusted."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘I will never send him with you, not unless you swear by God that you will bring him back to me if that is humanly possible.’ Then, when they had given him their pledge, he said, ‘Our words are entrusted to God.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allāh at all. The decision is only for Allāh; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘My sons, do not enter all by one gate- use different gates. But I cannot help you against the will of God: all power is in God’s hands. I trust in Him; let everyone put their trust in Him,’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they entered from where their father had ordered them, it did not avail them against Allāh at all except [it was] a need [i.e., concern] within the soul of Jacob, which he satisfied. And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most of the people do not know.
Abdel Haleemand, when they entered as their father had told them, it did not help them against the will of God, it merely satisfied a wish of Jacob’s. He knew well what We had taught him, though most people do not.
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they entered upon Joseph, he took his brother to himself; he said, "Indeed, I am your brother, so do not despair over what they used to do [to me]."
Abdel HaleemThen, when they presented themselves before Joseph, he drew his brother apart and said, ‘I am your brother, so do not be saddened by their past actions,’
Saheeh InternationalSo when he had furnished them with their supplies, he put the [gold measuring] bowl into the bag of his brother. Then an announcer called out, "O caravan, indeed you are thieves."
Abdel Haleemand, once he had given them their provisions, he placed the drinking-cup in his brother’s pack. A man called out, ‘People of the caravan! You are thieves!’
Saheeh InternationalThey said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"
Abdel Haleemand they turned and said, ‘What have you lost?’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "We are missing the measure of the king. And for he who produces it is [the reward of] a camel's load, and I am responsible for it."
Abdel HaleemThey replied, ‘The king’s drinking-cup is missing,’ and, ‘Whoever returns it will get a camel-load [of grain],’ and, ‘I give you my word.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "By Allāh, you have certainly known that we did not come to cause corruption in the land, and we have not been thieves."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘By God! You must know that we did not come to make mischief in your land: we are no thieves.’
Saheeh InternationalThey [the accusers] said, "Then what would be its recompense if you should be liars?"
Abdel HaleemThey asked them, ‘And if we find that you are lying, what penalty shall we apply to you?’
Saheeh International[The brothers] said, "Its recompense is that he in whose bag it is found - he [himself] will be its recompense. Thus do we recompense the wrongdoers."
Abdel Haleemand they answered, ‘The penalty will be [the enslavement of] the person in whose bag the cup is found: this is how we punish wrongdoers.’
Saheeh InternationalSo he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion [i.e., law] of the king except that Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.
Abdel Haleem[Joseph] began by searching their bags, then his brother’s, and he pulled it out from his brother’s bag. In this way We devised a plan for Joseph- if God had not willed it so, he could not have detained his brother as a penalty under the king’s law- We raise the rank of whoever We will. Above everyone who has knowledge there is the One who is all knowing.
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "If he steals - a brother of his has stolen before." But Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, "You are worse in position, and Allāh is most knowing of what you describe."
Abdel Haleem[His brothers] said, ‘If he is a thief then his brother was a thief before him,’ but Joseph kept his secrets and did not reveal anything to them. He said, ‘You are in a far worse situation. God knows best the truth of what you claim.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "O ʿAzeez, indeed he has a father [who is] an old man, so take one of us in place of him. Indeed, we see you as a doer of good."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘Mighty governor, he has an elderly father. Take one of us in his place. We can see that you are a very good man.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allāh [to prevent] that we take except him with whom we found our possession. Indeed, we would then be unjust."
Abdel HaleemHe replied, ‘God forbid that we should take anyone other than the person on whom we found our property: that would be unjust of us.’
Saheeh InternationalSo when they had despaired of him, they secluded themselves in private consultation. The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father has taken upon you an oath by Allāh and [that] before you failed in [your duty to] Joseph? So I will never leave [this] land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me, and He is the best of judges.
Abdel HaleemWhen they lost hope of [persuading] him, they withdrew to confer with each other: the eldest of them said, ‘Do you not remember that your father took a solemn pledge from you in the name of God and before that you failed in your duty with regard to Joseph? I will not leave this land until my father gives me leave or God decides for me- He is the best decider-
Saheeh InternationalReturn to your father and say, 'O our father, indeed your son has stolen, and we did not testify except to what we knew. And we were not witnesses of the unseen.
Abdel Haleemso go back to your father and say, “Your son stole. We can only tell you what we saw. How could we guard against the unforeseen?
Saheeh InternationalAnd ask the city in which we were and the caravan in which we came - and indeed, we are truthful.'"
Abdel HaleemAsk in the town where we have been; ask the people of the caravan we travelled with: we are telling the truth.”’
Saheeh International[Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allāh will bring them to me all together. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise."
Abdel HaleemTheir father said, ‘No! Your souls have prompted you to do wrong! But it is best to be patient: may God bring all of them back to me- He alone is the All Knowing, the All Wise,’
Saheeh InternationalAnd he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.
Abdel Haleemand he turned away from them, saying, ‘Alas for Joseph!’ His eyes went white with grief and he was filled with sorrow.
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "By Allāh, you will not cease remembering Joseph until you become fatally ill or become of those who perish."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘By God! You will ruin your health if you do not stop thinking of Joseph, or even die.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allāh, and I know from Allāh that which you do not know.
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘I plead my grief and sorrow before God. I have knowledge from God that you do not have.
Saheeh InternationalO my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allāh. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allāh except the disbelieving people."
Abdel HaleemMy sons, go and seek news of Joseph and his brother and do not despair of God’s mercy- only disbelievers despair of God’s mercy.’
Saheeh InternationalSo when they entered upon him [i.e., Joseph], they said, "O ʿAzeez, adversity has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods poor in quality, but give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allāh rewards the charitable."
Abdel HaleemThen, when they presented themselves before Joseph, they said, ‘Mighty governor, misfortune has afflicted us and our family. We have brought only a little merchandise, but give us full measure. Be charitable to us: God rewards the charitable.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "Do you know what you did with Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?"
Abdel HaleemHe said, ‘Do you now realize what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said, "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allāh has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allāh and is patient, then indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."
Abdel Haleemand they cried, ‘Could it be that you are Joseph?’ He said, ‘I am Joseph. This is my brother. God has been gracious to us: God does not deny anyone who is mindful of God and steadfast in adversity the rewards of those who do good.’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "By Allāh, certainly has Allāh preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."
Abdel HaleemThey said, ‘By God! God really did favour you over all of us and we were in the wrong!’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allāh forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful.
Abdel Haleembut he said, ‘You will hear no reproaches today. May God forgive you: He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.
Saheeh InternationalTake this, my shirt, and cast it over the face of my father; he will become seeing. And bring me your family, all together."
Abdel HaleemTake my shirt and lay it over my father’s face: he will recover his sight. Then bring your whole family back to me.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the caravan departed [from Egypt], their father said, "Indeed, I find the smell of Joseph [and would say that he was alive] if you did not think me weakened in mind."
Abdel HaleemLater, when the caravan departed, their father said, ‘You may think I am senile but I can smell Joseph,’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "By Allāh, indeed you are in your [same] old error."
Abdel Haleembut [people] said, ‘By God! You are still lost in that old illusion of yours!’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face, and he returned [once again] seeing. He said, "Did I not tell you that I know from Allāh that which you do not know?"
Abdel HaleemThen, when the bearer of good news came and placed the shirt on to Jacob’s face, his eyesight returned and he said, ‘Did I not tell you that I have knowledge from God that you do not have?’
Saheeh InternationalThey said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."
Abdel HaleemThe [brothers] said, ‘Father, ask God to forgive our sins- we were truly in the wrong.’
Saheeh InternationalHe said, "I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Abdel HaleemHe replied, ‘I shall ask my Lord to forgive you: He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself [i.e., embraced them] and said, "Enter Egypt, Allāh willing, safe [and secure]."
Abdel HaleemLater, when they presented themselves before Joseph, he drew his parents to him- he said, ‘Welcome to Egypt: you will all be safe here, God willing’-
Saheeh InternationalAnd he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.
Abdel Haleemand took them up to [his] throne. They all bowed down before him and he said, ‘Father, this is the fulfilment of that dream I had long ago. My Lord has made it come true and has been gracious to me- He released me from prison and He brought you here from the desert- after Satan sowed discord between me and my brothers. My Lord is most subtle in achieving what He will; He is the All Knowing, the Truly Wise.
Saheeh InternationalMy Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."
Abdel HaleemMy Lord! You have given me authority; You have taught me something about the interpretation of dreams; Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Let me die in true devotion to You. Join me with the righteous.’
Saheeh InternationalThat is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muḥammad], to you. And you were not with them when they put together their plan while they conspired.
Abdel HaleemThis account is part of what was beyond your knowledge [Muhammad]. We revealed it to you: you were not present with Joseph’s brothers when they made their treacherous plans.
Saheeh InternationalAnd most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.
Abdel HaleemHowever eagerly you may want them to, most men will not believe.
Saheeh InternationalAnd you do not ask of them for it any payment. It is not except a reminder to the worlds.
Abdel HaleemYou ask no reward from them for this: it is a reminder for all people
Saheeh InternationalAnd how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.
Abdel Haleemand there are many signs in the heavens and the earth that they pass by and give no heed to-
Saheeh InternationalAnd most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.
Abdel Haleemmost of them will only believe in God while also joining others with Him.
Saheeh InternationalThen do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allāh or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?
Abdel HaleemAre they so sure that an overwhelming punishment from God will not fall on them, or that the Last Hour will not come upon them suddenly when they least expect it?
Saheeh InternationalSay, "This is my way; I invite to Allāh with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allāh; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."
Abdel HaleemSay, ‘This is my way: based on clear evidence, I, and all who follow me, call [people] to God- glory be to God!- I do not join others with Him.’
Saheeh InternationalAnd We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allāh; then will you not reason?
Abdel HaleemAll the messengers We sent before you [Muhammad] were men to whom We made revelations, men chosen from the people of their towns. Have the [disbelievers] not travelled through the land and seen the end of those who went before them? For those who are mindful of God, the Home in the Hereafter is better. Do you [people] not use your reason?
Saheeh International[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.
Abdel HaleemWhen the messengers lost all hope and realized that they had been dismissed as liars, Our help came to them: We saved whoever We pleased, but Our punishment will not be turned away from guilty people.
Saheeh InternationalThere was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
Abdel HaleemThere is a lesson in the stories of such people for those who understand. This revelation is no fabrication: it is a confirmation of the truth of what was sent before it; an explanation of everything; a guide and a blessing for those who believe.
